A flyback chronograph lets you start timing a fresh interval while the chronograph is already running: press its designated flyback control, and the measurement resets and starts again in one action. The button positions and exact behavior vary by watch, so use your model’s manual rather than assuming a standard layout.

What a flyback chronograph does

A conventional chronograph typically requires separate actions to stop, return the counters to zero, and start another measurement. A flyback combines those actions: while timing is in progress, one press resets the measurement and immediately begins the next interval. A. Lange & Söhne describes it as a way to interrupt an ongoing measurement and start a new one by pressing a pusher: Flyback Mechanism.

This is useful when timing successive events because you do not need to stop, reset, and restart separately between intervals. The mechanism’s history is associated with aviation, where crews using maps and watches needed to respond quickly to events, as A. Lange & Söhne explains in the same watchmaking explainer. Flyback describes a faster sequence of operations; it does not, by itself, establish that a watch measures time more accurately.

How to use one: a model-specific example

First identify the controls and counters in your own watch’s instructions. The following sequence is for the Raymond Weil Freelancer Flyback cited in its official instructions; it is not a universal pusher map.

  1. Start timing: Press pusher I, located at 2 o’clock on this model.
  2. Begin a new interval while timing: While the chronograph is running, press pusher II, located at 4 o’clock. The counters reset and timing starts again.
  3. Stop and read: Press pusher I to stop the chronograph and read the elapsed time.
  4. Return to zero: With the chronograph stopped, press pusher II to reset the counters and prepare for another measurement.

Carl F. Bucherer’s Manero Flyback instructions describe the same distinction for that watch: P2 resets the counters and automatically starts a new measurement when the chronograph is running; when it is stopped, P2 returns the counters to zero. See the Manero Flyback instructions.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using the flyback control as if it were only a reset. On the examples above, pressing that control during a running measurement also starts the next interval.
  • Assuming the same button layout on every watch. Positions, labels, hold requirements, and counter behavior are model-specific; consult the exact manual for your watch.
  • Ignoring whether the chronograph is running or stopped. On the cited models, the flyback control has a different outcome depending on the chronograph’s state.
  • Inferring internal operation from the hand movement alone. Follow the manual’s description rather than generalizing how every mechanical or electronic implementation works.
  • Expecting flyback to guarantee better accuracy. The cited explanations establish the convenience of combining operations, not comparative accuracy results.

What to check in your watch’s manual

Before using the chronograph, confirm which control performs flyback, what that control does when the chronograph is stopped, how elapsed time appears on the counters, and whether the instructions specify any model-specific hold or release behavior. A watch such as the Longines Spirit Pilot Flyback is another example of a watch identified as having a flyback function, but its own instructions—not another brand’s pusher layout—should guide operation.
