Garmin said on January 29, 2025, that it had resolved the underlying issue causing some devices to get stuck on the startup screen or blue triangle. That did not guarantee every affected device would recover automatically: owners may still need a power reset, syncing, or model-specific recovery. Follow Garmin’s current instructions for your exact model, and treat a factory reset as a data-loss risk.
What happened and what Garmin said
Owners reported Garmin devices showing a blue triangle and repeatedly restarting; some reports described the problem after attempting to start a GPS activity. Garmin initially said it was aware of reports of blue triangles during GPS activity and that holding the power button might restore functionality temporarily. On January 29, 2025, Garmin told Engadget: “We have resolved the underlying issue causing some devices to be stuck on the start up screen.”
The “Blue Triangle of Death” is an informal name for this startup-screen or boot-loop symptom. Garmin’s statement refers to resolving the underlying issue; it does not prove that every device already stuck in a loop was repaired automatically. Garmin representatives later directed users to its startup-screen recovery instructions.
A contemporaneous report relayed a user theory involving a file called GPE.bin, but the reviewed evidence does not show that Garmin confirmed it as the cause. Do not treat that theory as an official diagnosis.

What should affected owners try?
- Identify your exact device model. Recovery steps can differ among Garmin devices.
- Use Garmin’s current startup-screen recovery instructions for that model. Garmin representatives directed users to its “My Garmin Device Will Not Boot Past the Start Up Screen” guidance.
- Try the reported basic power reset. Contemporaneous guidance described holding the power/light button until the device shuts off, then turning it on again. The reported maximum hold time was up to 15 seconds. If it boots, sync with Garmin Connect or Garmin Express.
- If it remains stuck, follow the model-specific recovery steps. Do not copy button combinations or procedures intended for another model. Some procedures use Garmin Express on a computer and a compatible power/data cable.
- Consider the data risk before a factory reset. Garmin’s reported guidance says a reset may be required for some devices and can erase data. Sync first if the device is detectable.
- Contact Garmin Product Support if the official steps fail. Garmin representatives directed users who could not recover their devices to support.
How do the recovery options compare?
| Option | When it may help | Data risk | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power reset, then sync | As an initial attempt when the device is stuck at startup | Lower than a factory reset; syncing may help preserve or restore account-backed information | Use Garmin’s guidance for your model; the reported hold time was up to 15 seconds |
| Model-specific computer recovery | If the basic reset does not work and Garmin’s procedure calls for a computer | Depends on the procedure | Whether Garmin Express recognizes the device and whether you have a compatible power/data cable |
| Factory reset | When Garmin’s instructions for that model require it | Can erase local data and settings | Sync beforehand if possible; do not assume all local information can be restored |
| Garmin Product Support | If official recovery steps fail | Support can advise on the next step; outcome depends on the case | Provide the exact model and describe the recovery steps already tried |
Do you need a new cable for recovery?
Only if Garmin’s procedure for your model requires a computer connection and you do not have a working compatible power/data cable. The cited Descent Mk3i recovery instructions list a computer and power/data cable, but they do not identify a cable SKU or show that one connector type fits every affected model.
A cable can provide the connection needed for a recovery procedure; it cannot fix the software issue by itself. If you already have a working compatible cable, the research provides no reason to buy another. Confirm the connector and model compatibility before purchasing a replacement.
Can a factory reset erase Garmin data?
Yes. Garmin’s reported guidance says a factory reset can erase data. The report specifically names Garmin Wallet information, Connect IQ content such as watch faces, and Body Battery insights. Syncing may restore some or most information, but do not assume every locally stored item will return.
If the device is still detectable, sync with Garmin Connect or Garmin Express before resetting. If it cannot connect, unsynchronized information may not be recoverable after a reset.

Will a factory reset erase my Garmin data?
It can. Garmin’s reported guidance names Garmin Wallet information, Connect IQ content such as watch faces, and Body Battery insights as data that may be erased. Sync first if the device is detectable, but do not assume all local information can be restored.
Should I delete GPE.bin to fix the boot loop?
No, not as a general fix. The reviewed evidence attributes that file theory to user discussion, not to a confirmed Garmin diagnosis or universal instruction.
Do I need to buy a cable?
Only if the recovery procedure for your exact model requires a computer connection and you lack a working compatible power/data cable. A cable enables a connection; it does not repair the software issue by itself.
