Garmin vs. Apple Watch: Which Is Better for Fitness Tracking?

Garmin favors endurance and sport-focused training; Apple Watch offers Apple smartwatch software and health features. The right choice depends on the exact models and your priorities.

Neither Garmin nor Apple Watch is universally better for fitness tracking. Garmin is a strong fit for endurance athletes who want long battery life and sport-focused training tools; Apple Watch suits people who prioritize Apple’s smartwatch software and health features. For heart-rate and GPS accuracy, the evidence here supports only a narrow comparison between two specific watches—not a verdict about either entire brand. Choose by comparing the exact models, features, and charging needs that match your activities.

What matters most for your training?

Choose Garmin for sport-focused tools and endurance use

Garmin’s lineup includes watches with built-in GPS, sleep tracking, long battery life, and advanced running and training features. Those capabilities vary by model, so check the specific watch’s activity profiles and training tools rather than assuming every Garmin has the same metrics. Garmin’s Stay Active overview and model comparisons describe the range of features.

Choose Apple Watch if smartwatch software and Apple health features matter more

Apple’s September 9, 2026 announcement says Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 add a health sensing system that measures heart rate every five seconds throughout the day, plus a readiness feature. Apple describes readiness as a daily score from 0 to 10, informed by recent activity, vitals, and sleep, with a recommendation. These capabilities are tied to the announced models; check Apple’s announcement for the model and regional availability details.

Which tracks heart rate and GPS more accurately?

The available head-to-head evidence does not establish a universal winner. In an October 10, 2026 TechRadar comparison, a reviewer ran with a Garmin Fenix 9 Pro and Apple Watch Ultra 4 alongside an electrical heart-rate monitor, and reported that both watches performed well in that paired-run test. That is useful evidence for those watches and that test, not a guarantee for every model, sport, wearer, fit, or firmware version. See TechRadar’s comparison.

#1 Best Overall
Garmin Forerunner® 970, 47mm, Carbon Gray DLC Titanium, Black/Whitestone
  • Our brightest AMOLED touchscreen display with button controls, a lightweight titanium bezel and sapphire lens, plus a built-in LED flashlight for greater awareness in the dark during early morning or late-night runs
  • Up to 15 days of battery life in smartwatch mode and up to 26 hours in GPS mode for a more complete picture of your training and recovery
  • Understand your overall energy efficiency with running economy, and see how much you’re slowing down when your foot hits the ground with step speed loss (HRM 600 monitor required; sold separately); running tolerance helps you understand the real impact running has on your body so you can adjust your training to avoid overload and improve
  • Train for an event, achieve a milestone, or improve your fitness with Garmin Coach training plans; these running and triathlon plans are personalized to you and adapt based on your performance and recovery
  • Built-in microphone and speaker let you make and take phone calls from your wrist when your watch is paired to your smartphone — and you can even use your smartphone’s voice assistant to respond to text messages and more

Heart-rate and GPS results can vary with the activity and how the watch is worn. The sources available here do not provide a broader controlled comparison across sports or users, nor a verified accuracy percentage. If accuracy is decisive, look for evidence on the specific models and activity you care about rather than extrapolating from one run.

How do battery life and smartwatch features compare?

In the same Fenix 9 Pro versus Ultra 4 comparison, TechRadar characterized Garmin as the longer-battery-life choice and Apple as stronger in smartwatch software and apps. Treat that as a reviewer’s assessment of those watches and their use—not a specification shared by every model in either range. Compare the manufacturer’s estimate for your exact model and remember that settings and use affect battery life.

Rank #2
Garmin Forerunner® 970, 47mm, Soft Gold Titanium, French Gray/Indigo

  • Built-in microphone and speaker let you make and take phone calls from your wrist when your watch is paired to your smartphone — and you can even use your smartphone’s voice assistant to respond to text messages and more

This trade-off is often practical: consider how frequently you are willing to charge, alongside whether you want a sport-first watch or broader smartwatch functions. The Garmin lineup varies by model, and Apple’s new health features are not a reason to assume every Apple Watch generation has them.

How do Garmin training and recovery tools compare with Apple’s health features?

Tom’s Guide’s 2025 comparison assessed Garmin as having an edge in fitness tracking, training, and recovery because of its broader toolkit. That is an editorial assessment, not a controlled accuracy test or an objective score. Apple’s 2026 announcement adds model-specific readiness features to Series 12 and Ultra 4, so the useful comparison is between the actual tools on the watches you are considering—not a blanket claim that one brand always offers more.

Before choosing, list the metrics and activity profiles you will use. Confirm they are available on the exact model and in your region; product lineups and feature availability can differ.

Can Garmin fitness data sync to Apple Health?

Garmin Connect can share some information with Apple Health, depending on settings and device support. Garmin Support says this sharing is one-way: Garmin Connect can push supported information to Apple Health, but it does not pull information from Apple Health or Apple Watch. Associated GPS tracks are not written to Apple Health. Check Garmin’s Apple Health integration guidance before relying on a particular data type or device combination.

How to choose the right model

  1. Start with your activities. Identify the sports you track most, then verify the exact watch has the activity profiles and training tools you need.
  2. Set your charging limit. Compare the specific models’ stated battery estimates and consider how your typical settings and use may affect them.
  3. Decide which health features matter. Check the generation, model, and regional availability of each feature; Apple’s announced readiness tools apply to Series 12 and Ultra 4.
  4. Check your data workflow. If Apple Health is where you keep records, verify which Garmin Connect information transfers and whether the one-way sharing limits matter to you.
  5. Compare current prices for the models you have narrowed down. A current matched-model price comparison is not established here, so there is no sound basis for declaring one brand the better value.

For a running-focused Garmin versus an Apple option, the Garmin Forerunner 970 is one model named in Tom’s Guide’s comparison; Apple Watch Series 12 is among Apple’s announced watches with the new health sensing and readiness features. For an outdoor/endurance comparison, the Garmin Fenix 9 Pro and Apple Watch Ultra 4 are the two watches in TechRadar’s paired-run test. These are examples, not universal recommendations: confirm current listings, configurations, and availability before buying.
