Garmin did announce a virtual product-launch event for August 27, 2024, at 7 a.m. ET. The fēnix 8 was not officially named in Garmin’s pre-event teaser, but the sports imagery, infinity-style symbol and prior reporting made it the clear frontrunner. Garmin confirmed that expectation the following day, announcing the fēnix 8 family with AMOLED and solar display options, new voice hardware, dive features, an LED flashlight and a launch price of $999.99 in the U.S.

What Garmin announced before the event

On August 26, 2024, Garmin announced a virtual product-launch livestream scheduled for August 27 at 7 a.m. Eastern Time—12 p.m. BST and 1 p.m. CET. Contemporary reporting from Notebookcheck linked the event to Garmin’s social-media teaser and event page.

Garmin’s teaser showed athletes running, skiing, weightlifting and swimming. It also used an infinity-style symbol that viewers interpreted as a reference to the number eight. That made a new fēnix generation a strong expectation, but not a pre-event confirmation. Garmin had not directly named the fēnix 8 in the teaser.

The distinction mattered. The teaser supported the idea that Garmin was preparing a major multisport launch, but it did not prove that every rumored watch—or every leaked specification—would appear.

What Garmin actually launched

On August 27, Garmin officially announced the fēnix 8. The premium multisport GPS smartwatch arrived in two display families:

  • AMOLED: 43 mm, 47 mm and 51 mm case sizes.
  • Solar: 47 mm and 51 mm case sizes, using a sunlight-visible transflective display.

Garmin listed a U.S. starting suggested retail price of $999.99 at launch. Prices vary by case size, materials, lens and display configuration, and U.S. pricing should not be assumed to apply in other countries.

Major hardware and software additions

  • Built-in speaker and microphone.
  • Integrated LED flashlight.
  • Dive capability.
  • Expanded strength-training tools.
  • Garmin Share for sharing selected data and information between compatible devices.
  • Built-in mapping and multisport GPS functions.
  • Smart notifications, music downloads through supported services and Garmin Pay.
  • Incident Detection, Assistance and LiveTrack when paired with a compatible smartphone.

Music-service availability and downloads depend on supported services; Garmin’s announcement notes that a premium subscription is required for the cited music functionality. Safety tools also depend on a compatible phone and may be affected by regional, cellular and network limitations.

  • For your active lifestyle, a built-in speaker and mic let you make and take phone calls from your wrist when your watch is paired to your smartphone — and you can even use your smartphone’s voice assistant to respond to text messages and more

Battery life: AMOLED versus solar

Garmin’s headline battery estimates favor the larger models. The 51-mm AMOLED fēnix 8 is rated for up to 29 days in smartwatch mode, while the 51-mm solar model is rated for up to 48 days under Garmin’s stated solar-use assumptions.

Version Display approach Claimed maximum Best suited to Main compromise
fēnix 8 AMOLED Bright, high-contrast AMOLED Up to 29 days in smartwatch mode for 51 mm; up to 13 days with always-on display Indoor use, maps, watch faces and buyers who prioritize visual quality Shorter endurance, especially with always-on display and demanding GPS use
fēnix 8 Solar Sunlight-visible transflective display Up to 30 days normally or 48 days with solar for 51 mm Long outings, expeditions and buyers who value endurance Less vivid than AMOLED and dependent on outdoor light exposure

These are manufacturer estimates, not independent test results. Garmin’s 48-day solar figure assumes all-day wear and approximately three hours outdoors per day under specified light conditions. GPS recording, music, notifications, sensors, satellite settings and display behavior can reduce endurance substantially. “Solar” does not mean unlimited battery life in ordinary use.

Why the display choice is the key decision

The original fēnix line was associated with endurance-focused, sunlight-readable displays. The fēnix 8 broadened the range by offering AMOLED without abandoning solar models.

Rank #3
Garmin fēnix® 8 Pro, 51mm, Sapphire, DLC Titanium, Black/Pebble Gray
  • Multisport GPS smartwatch with built-in inReach technology for two-way satellite and LTE connectivity (active subscription required; coverage limitations may apply; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
  • Rugged design with a bright 1.4" AMOLED touchscreen display, titanium bezel, scratch-resistant sapphire lens and other premium materials
  • In an emergency, inReach satellite technology allows you to trigger an interactive SOS message to the Garmin ResponseSM coordination center for 24/7 assistance (active subscription required; coverage limitations may apply; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
  • LTE network connectivity lets you leave your phone behind; use your watch to exchange messages and make voice calls — plus let friends follow along with LiveTrack location sharing (30-second update rate) and location check-ins with the on-device Garmin Messenger app (active subscription required; coverage limitations may apply)
  • inReach technology allows you to send messages and get location check-ins over satellite when taking on an off-grid adventure (active subscription required; coverage limitations may apply; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)

Choose AMOLED if you want a brighter, more smartphone-like interface, sharper-looking maps and watch faces, and better visual impact indoors. Remember that enabling the always-on display lowers Garmin’s advertised smartwatch estimate for the 51-mm model from up to 29 days to up to 13 days.

Choose solar if charging frequency matters more than display vibrancy, you spend substantial time outside, or you are preparing for long trips where access to a charger is limited. The larger 51-mm case offers the strongest endurance claims, but it is also physically larger and may be uncomfortable on smaller wrists.

Should fēnix 7 owners upgrade?

Not automatically. A fēnix 7 or fēnix 7 Pro owner who is already satisfied with GPS recording, mapping, battery life and training metrics may get limited value from an immediate upgrade.

Garmin fēnix® 8, Sapphire, 51mm, DLC Titanium, Black/Pebble Gray
  • Advanced multisport GPS smartwatch for athletes/adventurers features a big, bright 1.4” AMOLED display with scratch-resistant sapphire lens, durable titanium bezel and a built-in LED flashlight for after- dark visibility
  • Power up your body’s performance, endurance and resistance to injury with targeted strength training plans, real-time stamina tracking, sport-specific workouts and a full range of built-in sports apps
  • Battery performance: up to 29 days in smartwatch mode; up to 84 hours in GPS mode
  • Your training readiness score is based on sleep quality, recovery, training load and HRV status to determine if you’re primed to go hard and reap the rewards (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
  • For your active lifestyle, a built-in speaker and mic let you make and take phone calls from your wrist when your watch is paired to your smartphone — and you can even use your smartphone’s voice assistant to respond to text messages and more

The fēnix 8 makes the strongest case for people who specifically want:

  • An AMOLED display after using a MIP-style fēnix.
  • A built-in microphone and speaker.
  • The integrated LED flashlight.
  • Dive functionality.
  • The newer strength-training features.

If your watch is used mainly for running, hiking or recording workouts, identify the feature that changes your daily use before paying for a new device. The display change can be significant for some owners, while the microphone, diving tools and advanced strength functions may be irrelevant to others.

How the buying decision looks now

The original 2024 launch story is now historical. As of the Garmin comparison-page pricing observed on August 18, 2026, the U.S. product range includes the original fēnix 8, the newer fēnix 8 Pro and the fēnix 8 Pro MicroLED. Current page price signals were:

Best Value

Model U.S. price signal observed August 18, 2026 Who should consider it
fēnix 8 47-mm AMOLED $999.99 and up Buyers wanting the original premium feature set in a smaller AMOLED case
fēnix 8 51-mm AMOLED $1,099.99 and up Buyers who want AMOLED and the strongest AMOLED battery claim
fēnix 8 51-mm solar $1,199.99 and up Buyers prioritizing maximum endurance and outdoor use
fēnix 8 Pro 51-mm AMOLED $1,299.99 Buyers who need the newer Pro generation’s specific additions
fēnix 8 Pro 51-mm MicroLED $1,699.99 Buyers specifically willing to pay for the newer display technology
Instinct 3 $349.99 for 45-mm AMOLED; $399.99 for 50-mm solar Buyers seeking a less expensive rugged Garmin and willing to give up premium mapping and fēnix features

Those prices are U.S. signals from Garmin’s comparison pages, not universal or guaranteed transaction prices. Check the exact model, case size, lens, display, region and current availability before buying.

For many buyers, a discounted original fēnix 8 is likely to offer the best value if its display, mapping and training features are sufficient. The fēnix 8 Pro makes more sense when its particular newer capabilities matter—not simply because it is newer. The Pro MicroLED model is aimed at buyers who place a high value on display technology and accept a substantial premium. If you only need rugged GPS training and do not need built-in maps or the full fēnix feature set, the Instinct 3 is a more economical direction.

Health and safety limitations

Feature availability is not identical worldwide. Garmin’s ECG feature, where supported, depends on country approval, compatible hardware, software and phone/app requirements. Pulse Ox availability also varies by region. ECG is not a general medical diagnostic replacement. Likewise, Incident Detection, Assistance and LiveTrack require a compatible smartphone and are not substitutes for emergency services in every situation.

What about a fēnix 9?

Online reports and leaks have discussed a possible fēnix 9, but the available evidence does not establish an official Garmin announcement. Treat launch dates, specifications and prices as rumor unless they appear in Garmin’s newsroom or official product documentation. Waiting can be sensible for buyers who are comfortable with uncertainty; it is not a reason to assume that a new model is imminent.

Garmin later introduced the fēnix 8 Pro on September 3, 2025, according to Garmin’s newsroom archive. The Pro generation—and its MicroLED variant—should not be confused with the original fēnix 8 announcement from August 2024.

Bottom line for buyers

Garmin’s August 27, 2024 event was real, and the fēnix 8 expectation proved correct. The original watch remains most compelling when you choose deliberately between AMOLED and solar: AMOLED favors visual quality, while solar favors endurance. Existing fēnix owners should upgrade for a specific new capability rather than for the name alone, and no buyer should make a purchase decision based solely on unconfirmed fēnix 9 reports.
