Verdict: The August 24, 2024 leak was substantially correct about Garmin’s fēnix 8 strategy. Garmin ultimately offered AMOLED models in 43, 47 and 51 mm sizes, while sunlight-visible MIP displays were reserved for 47 and 51 mm Solar models. The leaked battery figures were also close to the final specifications—but only when their usage conditions are understood.
The biggest caveat is AMOLED’s Always On Display. Garmin rates the 51 mm AMOLED model for up to 29 days in smartwatch mode with gesture wake, but up to 13 days with Always On enabled. The 51 mm Solar model is rated for up to 30 days in typical smartwatch use, or 48 days under Garmin’s specified solar conditions.

What was in the original fēnix 8 leak?
The August 24, 2024 Notebookcheck report cited FitnessTrackerTest and described a forthcoming fēnix 8 range with two display strategies:
- AMOLED for standard models, prioritising a brighter and more colourful interface.
- Transflective MIP displays for Solar models, prioritising low-power operation and long endurance.
- A claimed 48-day smartwatch-mode battery life for the 51 mm Solar model.
- Approximately 28 days for the 51 mm AMOLED model.
- Larger display and case options across the range.
Because this was pre-launch material, the figures were subject to change. Pre-release firmware, reseller information and marketing estimates do not necessarily match final retail specifications. The report also did not provide the full model-by-model breakdown or explain how Always On Display, satellite modes, music and expedition settings affect endurance.

What Garmin ultimately confirmed
Garmin announced the fēnix 8 lineup on August 27, 2024—three days after the leak. Its official launch announcement confirmed the broad product strategy:
| Variant | Display | Sizes | Headline smartwatch battery |
|---|---|---|---|
| fēnix 8 AMOLED | AMOLED | 43, 47 and 51 mm | Up to 10, 16 or 29 days with gesture wake |
| fēnix 8 Solar | Sunlight-visible transflective MIP with solar charging | 47 and 51 mm | Up to 21 or 30 days typical use; up to 28 or 48 days with solar |
The range launched in the US with suggested retail pricing starting at $999.99. Exact prices vary by size, materials, region and current promotions. Garmin also highlighted a speaker, microphone, LED flashlight, dive capability, revised strength-training features, mapping, Garmin Messenger compatibility and ECG-app compatibility. These features are useful context, but the central buying decision remains display preference versus endurance.
Full Garmin fēnix 8 AMOLED battery estimates
The following are Garmin’s published estimates, not independent test results. “Gesture wake” means the display activates when you raise or move your wrist; Always On Display produces a materially lower estimate.

| Expedition GPS, with solar | 58 days | 118 days |
The solar-assisted numbers depend on Garmin’s stated light exposure. For some smartwatch and expedition estimates, Garmin specifies three hours outdoors per day at 50,000 lux; certain GPS estimates also assume outdoor use at 50,000 lux. That is not a universal real-world guarantee. Season, latitude, cloud, shade, clothing, urban surroundings, outdoor time and watch orientation all affect the energy harvested.
The crucial AMOLED Always On Display caveat
The 29-day figure is not the expected runtime of every 51 mm AMOLED watch in every configuration. It is Garmin’s estimate for smartwatch mode with gesture wake:
Rank #3
- Advanced multisport GPS smartwatch for athletes/adventurers features a bright 1.3” AMOLED display, stainless steel bezel, enhanced graphical interface and a built-in LED flashlight for after- dark visibility
- Power up your body’s performance, endurance and resistance to injury with targeted strength training plans, real-time stamina tracking, sport-specific workouts and a full range of built-in sports apps
- Battery performance: up to 10 days in smartwatch mode; up to 28 hours in GPS mode
- Your training readiness score is based on sleep quality, recovery, training load and HRV status to determine if you’re primed to go hard and reap the rewards (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- For your active lifestyle, a built-in speaker and mic let you make and take phone calls from your wrist when your watch is paired to your smartphone — and you can even use your smartphone’s voice assistant to respond to text messages and more
- 43 mm AMOLED: up to 10 days with gesture wake, or 4 days Always On.
- 47 mm AMOLED: up to 16 days with gesture wake, or 7 days Always On.
- 51 mm AMOLED: up to 29 days with gesture wake, or 13 days Always On.
This is why it is misleading to say that AMOLED “matches” MIP battery life without qualification. The 51 mm AMOLED can deliver an unusually strong headline result when the screen is gesture-activated, but the Solar/MIP models remain substantially stronger for long GPS activities, battery-saver use and expedition modes.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow the leak compares with the final product
| Leaked claim | Final assessment |
|---|---|
| AMOLED and MIP would coexist | Confirmed. AMOLED became the 43, 47 and 51 mm branch; MIP was linked to the 47 and 51 mm Solar branch. |
| 51 mm Solar could reach 48 days | Confirmed with conditions. Garmin lists 30 days typical use and up to 48 days with specified solar exposure. |
| 51 mm AMOLED could reach roughly 28 days | Broadly confirmed. Garmin’s final estimate was up to 29 days with gesture wake. |
| Solar would prioritise endurance | Confirmed. Solar/MIP leads in long-duration GPS, battery-saver and expedition estimates. |
| AMOLED would not destroy headline battery life | Directionally accurate but incomplete. Always On Display reduces the 51 mm estimate from 29 to 13 days. |
So the leak was substantially right about the lineup and headline numbers, but not a complete guide to ownership. Battery life must always be compared using the same mode: GPS-only is not equivalent to all satellite systems plus multi-band, and smartwatch mode is not equivalent to music playback or expedition GPS.

AMOLED
AMOLED is the better fit if you want bright colours, high-contrast graphics and a more phone-like visual experience. It can make maps, workouts and notifications more immediately attractive and readable indoors. The trade-off is greater sensitivity to display behaviour, especially Always On Display, and lower endurance in extended tracking modes than the Solar models.
Rank #4
- Advanced multisport GPS smartwatch for athletes/adventurers features a bright 1.4” AMOLED display with scratch-resistant sapphire lens, durable titanium bezel and a built-in LED flashlight for after- dark visibility - weight is 80g
- Power up your body’s performance, endurance and resistance to injury with targeted strength training plans, real-time stamina tracking, sport-specific workouts and a full range of built-in sports apps
- Battery performance: up to 16 days in smartwatch mode; up to 47 hours in GPS mode
- Your training readiness score is based on sleep quality, recovery, training load and HRV status to determine if you’re primed to go hard and reap the rewards (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- For your active lifestyle, a built-in speaker and mic let you make and take phone calls from your wrist when your watch is paired to your smartphone — and you can even use your smartphone’s voice assistant to respond to text messages and more
MIP/Solar
MIP is designed around efficient, sunlight-visible operation, and in this generation it is paired with solar charging. It is the stronger choice for users who want an always-readable outdoor display, infrequent charging and the highest published endurance. It is not offered in the smallest 43 mm case, and its graphics are less vivid than AMOLED.
Solar does not make the watch charge-free. It extends endurance when the watch receives sufficient light; it cannot reliably replace charging in cloudy, shaded, winter or mostly indoor conditions.
Which fēnix 8 should you buy?
- Choose the 43 mm AMOLED if a smaller case is essential and you prefer AMOLED visuals. Accept that it has the shortest battery life: up to 10 days with gesture wake or 4 days Always On.
- Choose the 47 mm AMOLED for the middle ground between case size and endurance. It is rated for up to 16 days with gesture wake or 7 days Always On.
- Choose the 51 mm AMOLED if you want the longest-lasting AMOLED model and can accept a large case. Its headline 29-day figure assumes gesture wake; Always On reduces that to 13 days.
- Choose the 47 mm Solar/MIP if outdoor readability and long battery life matter more than colourful AMOLED graphics, but the 51 mm case is too large.
- Choose the 51 mm Solar/MIP if maximum endurance is the priority—for multi-day hikes, ultra-distance events, expeditions or simply fewer charging interruptions. Garmin rates it for up to 30 days typical use, 48 days with specified solar exposure, 95 hours of GPS-only use and 50 days in Expedition GPS mode without the solar assumption.
For current price, stock, colours and materials, check Garmin’s regional product listings. The official 51 mm product page and official 43 mm product page are more reliable than the 2024 launch announcement for current SKU-level details. Music downloads from Spotify, Deezer or Amazon Music require a premium subscription to those services, according to Garmin’s announcement; core watch, GPS, health-tracking and battery functions do not require a monthly Garmin subscription in the cited material.
Final verdict
The fēnix 8 leak was a good forecast, not a complete specification sheet. It correctly anticipated the AMOLED-versus-Solar/MIP split, the 48-day 51 mm Solar claim and an approximately 28-day 51 mm AMOLED result. Garmin’s final figures—29 days for the 51 mm AMOLED with gesture wake and 30 typical days or up to 48 solar-assisted days for the 51 mm Solar—largely validated it.
The buying decision is less about whether AMOLED or MIP is universally better and more about how you use the watch. Choose AMOLED for visual quality, especially in a smaller case; choose Solar/MIP for sustained outdoor readability and the strongest endurance. Most importantly, compare the numbers under matching conditions and treat solar figures as estimates tied to Garmin’s light assumptions, not promises of unlimited battery life.
