Garmin did confirm a Garmin Connect iOS problem that caused some previously paired watches to disappear from the app or become unpaired. The initial incident was linked to Garmin Connect 5.21, with Garmin saying the problem was addressed in version 5.21.1. Later releases, including 5.21.3, and subsequent iOS 26.x updates were associated with further user reports.
This does not mean every Garmin fēnix 8, Venu 4 or Forerunner 970 was defective. The strongest evidence points to an app-and-phone pairing problem affecting some owners across multiple models.

What went wrong
Owners reported that Garmin Connect stopped recognizing a watch that had already been paired. In some cases, the watch still appeared as Connected under Settings > Bluetooth on the iPhone, but it was unavailable inside Garmin Connect.

- The watch disappearing from Garmin Connect’s device list.
- Failed manual or background synchronization.
- Smart notifications and other phone-connected features stopping.
- A prompt to remove and add the watch again.
Garmin acknowledged the Connect 5.21 iOS issue in its forum and said it had been addressed in Connect 5.21.1. Garmin’s forum announcement does not establish that every affected case had one identical cause.

Which devices and software were involved?
The original, clearest incident involved Garmin Connect 5.21 on iOS. It should not automatically be generalized to Android or to every Garmin watch.
The reported timeline is:
| Software | What was reported |
|---|---|
| Garmin Connect 5.21 | Some previously paired watches disappeared or became unpaired in Garmin Connect. |
| Garmin Connect 5.21.1 | Garmin said the original issue had been addressed. |
| Connect 5.21.2 and 5.21.3 | Some forum participants reported restored syncing or additional corrective changes; others continued to have trouble. |
| iOS 26.3 and later reports | Owners described renewed or continuing connectivity problems, which may not have been the original 5.21 bug. |
Later complaints involving iOS 26.3 and Connect 5.21.3 are documented in this Garmin forum thread. Forum reports show that people experienced the problem; they do not provide prevalence data or prove a single root cause.
Is this Garmin’s fault or Apple’s?
The evidence supports a narrower conclusion than either “Apple broke Garmin watches” or “Garmin bricked them.” Garmin acknowledged a problem associated with its Connect 5.21 iOS release, while owners also reported failures after iOS 26.x updates.
Bluetooth communication depends on several layers: the watch’s software, Garmin Connect, iOS Bluetooth services, permissions, background operation and sometimes other connected phones or apps. A failure in any of those layers can produce similar symptoms. The available reports do not establish one definitive cause for every later incident.
First identify the type of failure
| Symptom | Most useful starting point |
|---|---|
| Watch is missing from Garmin Connect | Remove the Bluetooth pairing and add the watch again through Garmin Connect. |
| Watch is visible but will not sync | Restart both devices, check permissions and try Garmin Express. |
| Activities sync but notifications do not | Check notification permissions, Focus modes and per-app notification settings. |
| Watch crashes, reboots or shows a blank screen | Investigate watch firmware and contact Garmin; do not assume the app caused it. |
| Only Apple Health is affected | Treat it as a health-data integration problem rather than automatically as a Bluetooth-pairing failure. |
Try these fixes in the safest order
1. Update and restart everything
Check the App Store for the latest Garmin Connect release, then force-close Garmin Connect and reopen it. Toggle Bluetooth off and on in Settings > Bluetooth; using only Control Center may not fully reset the Bluetooth service.
Restart the iPhone and restart the watch using its normal power control or the model-specific soft-reset procedure. Garmin’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance also recommends confirming current software, checking that the watch is not paired to another phone and ensuring Garmin Connect is current.

2. Check permissions and competing phone settings
In iPhone settings, verify that Garmin Connect has Bluetooth and notification access. Also check Background App Refresh and any location, local-network or health-data permissions requested by the app or your watch model.
Temporarily consider whether a VPN, Screen Time restriction, enterprise-management profile or aggressive battery-saving configuration is interfering. Check for a second iPhone, iPad or other phone that may still be paired to the watch. These are possible variables, not confirmed causes of the Garmin incident.
3. Remove only the damaged pairing
If Garmin Connect cannot communicate with the watch:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth and forget the Garmin watch.
- If it remains listed in Garmin Connect, remove it there as well.
- On the watch, open its phone-pairing control. The menu name varies by model.
- In Garmin Connect, choose More > Garmin Devices > Add Device or the equivalent Add Device prompt.
- Complete Bluetooth discovery or scan the QR code shown by compatible watches.
A Garmin user-reported workaround follows this remove-and-re-pair sequence. Re-pairing is relatively low risk, but it may not solve an iOS-level compatibility problem.

4. Reinstall Garmin Connect only if re-pairing fails
As a more disruptive step, remove Garmin Connect, forget the watch in Bluetooth settings, restart the iPhone and install the latest app again. If Garmin Connect IQ is installed and the wider app ecosystem appears corrupted, removing and reinstalling it may also help, although this is not a confirmed universal fix.
Make sure you can sign back into your Garmin account before deleting the app, and expect to reconfigure permissions, notifications and watch settings afterward.
Do not factory-reset the watch first
A factory reset can remove local settings and may risk unsynced activity data. It also does not reliably cure an iOS or Garmin Connect compatibility problem. Reserve it for cases where Garmin specifically recommends it or less destructive recovery steps have failed.

If the watch is still recording activities, avoid deleting anything until you have tried syncing through another route or contacted Garmin about preserving the files.
Use Garmin Express as a phone-free fallback
Garmin Express can update compatible watches, help with failed synchronization and provide a way to transfer activities through a Windows PC or Mac. It is particularly useful when the watch works normally but Garmin Connect does not.
Connect the watch with a compatible data cable, install Garmin Express, sign in if prompted and follow the device instructions. Express cannot fix every Bluetooth problem, but it helps answer an important question: does the watch and its USB connection work independently of the phone app?
Garmin listed Express 7.29.1 for Windows and 7.29.2 for Mac on July 21, 2026. Desktop software versions can change, so check Garmin’s current support page before installation.
If syncing works but notifications do not
Notification failures are not automatically evidence that the pairing incident is still present. Check:

- Fēnix 8 treadmill-calibration failures after watch software 22.35.
- Venu 4 music crashes or reboots when Bluetooth headphones are used.
- Venu 4 blank-screen or boot-loop complaints.

These may relate to watch firmware, an activity profile, Bluetooth headphones, hardware or a separate software defect. Garmin forum discussions cover Venu 4 music-related crashes and fēnix 8 treadmill calibration separately from the Connect pairing incident.
When to contact Garmin
Contact Garmin support if the watch repeatedly disconnects after a clean re-pairing, cannot sync through either Garmin Connect or Garmin Express, enters a reboot loop, shows a persistent blank screen, fails firmware updates or may have suffered physical damage.
Recommended Free Tools
Tell support the watch model, iPhone model, iOS version, Garmin Connect version, when the problem began and whether Bluetooth settings still show the watch. That information helps distinguish an app issue from a watch-firmware or hardware failure.
What this means for fēnix 8, Venu 4 and Forerunner 970 owners
Buying a different Garmin watch is not a dependable workaround for an app-level problem. The fēnix 8, Venu 4 and Forerunner 970 all depend on Garmin’s wider phone and account ecosystem, so changing models may leave the underlying compatibility issue unchanged.
Choose a replacement only if the evidence points to a genuine hardware failure or the watch no longer meets your needs: fēnix is aimed at rugged outdoor and multisport use, Forerunner at serious running and triathlon training, and Venu at general wellness and smartwatch features. Troubleshooting and Garmin Express do not require buying a new watch.
Current status
The original Garmin Connect 5.21 iOS pairing incident received a stated software fix, but that does not mean every later connectivity complaint was resolved. Reports involving newer Connect releases and iOS 26.x should be treated as later or recurring compatibility complaints unless Garmin identifies them as the same defect.
