These are the Apple Watch features worth configuring—not novelty tricks. They can make information easier to find, reduce unnecessary battery drain, improve workouts and sleep tracking, and keep essential safety tools ready. The instructions below are written as a 2025 guide and updated for the watchOS 26 generation.
1. Turn the Smart Stack into a useful dashboard
Best for: almost every Apple Watch owner. Supported on: models running a compatible watchOS version, with some widgets and Live Activities varying by app, location, and software.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The Smart Stack puts timely information behind the watch face. It can surface widgets, timers, workouts, music, messages, Live Activities, and contextual suggestions based on factors such as time, location, and routine.
- From the watch face, turn the Digital Crown upward or swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
- Scroll through the widgets and tap one to open its app.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Edit.
- Add, remove, pin, or reorder widgets, then tap Done.
Pin only the information you actually check. Battery, Weather, Calendar, Workouts, Timers, Medication reminders, Home, and Maps or transit are sensible starting points. Pinned widgets stay in a fixed position, while supported Live Activities can appear at the top when something—such as a workout or timer—is in progress.

2. Use Double Tap for one-handed actions
Best for: answering calls, stopping timers, or controlling apps when your other hand is occupied. Supported on: Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, and Apple Watch SE 3, according to Apple’s support documentation.
Tap the index finger and thumb together twice. The watch performs the primary action shown on screen. Depending on the app, that can mean answering or ending a call, pausing media, stopping a timer, replying to a message, scrolling, snoozing an alarm, taking a Camera Remote photo, recording a voice memo, controlling a stopwatch, or changing a flashlight mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap Gestures, then Double Tap.
- Turn the feature on or off.
Double Tap is contextual; it does not control every screen or third-party app. It may also be unavailable when Wrist Detection is off, the watch is locked or loose, Low Power Mode, Sleep Focus, Theater Mode, or Water Lock is active, certain accessibility hand gestures are enabled, or the watch was configured through Apple Watch For Your Kids.
Wake the display, wear the watch snugly, and make the gesture at the pace of a normal double-click. Apple’s troubleshooting guide lists the supported models and failure conditions.
3. Make the watch an iPhone camera remote
Best for: group photos, self-timers, and steadier shots. Requires: a paired iPhone within normal Bluetooth range for the standard remote-camera experience.
- Open Camera Remote on the Apple Watch.
- Place the iPhone and use the watch preview to compose the image.
- Tap the shutter button. Use the timer or other displayed controls when appropriate.
The watch is controlling the iPhone camera, not taking an independent photograph. On supported models, Double Tap can trigger the camera action as well. If the preview does not appear, bring the devices closer, confirm Bluetooth is available, and check that the iPhone’s Camera app is ready.

4. Build workouts around the metrics you need
Best for: anyone who has outgrown the default Workout view. Supported on: availability varies by workout type, model, and watchOS version.
Instead of accepting every default metric, configure workouts around your goal: heart-rate zones for running, intervals for structured sessions, pacing for races, elevation and route information for hiking, or a multisport workout for events that combine disciplines.
In the Workout app, choose a workout type and use its available options to select a goal, create intervals, or customize workout views. Depending on the activity and watch, you may also find heart-rate zones, route features, automatic workout detection, Training Load, GPS information, and multisport controls.
For long outdoor activities, Low Power Mode can use Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings. That can extend endurance, but it reduces detail and removes or limits features such as workout alerts, splits, segments, and current pace. Use it for a long hike or travel day—not when maximum workout granularity matters. Apple’s Apple Watch feature overview and Low Power Mode documentation explain the trade-offs.

5. Set up sleep tracking before bedtime
Best for: identifying sleep patterns and overnight trends. Requires: consistent wear and enough charge to last through the night.
Set a sleep schedule and use Sleep Focus so the watch is less distracting overnight. Charge while getting ready in the evening, wear the watch securely but comfortably, and review the results in the Health app the next day. If your routine requires a morning top-up, charge again after waking.
Do not assume that every Apple Watch measures every health metric. Available measurements depend on the model, software, country or region, age, and regulatory approval. Health data can support awareness and trend monitoring; it is not a medical diagnosis.

Best for: hikes, travel days, long workouts, or getting through the night when the battery is low. Trade-off: longer endurance in exchange for reduced features and measurements.
- Press the side button to open Control Center.
- Tap the battery-percentage button.
- Turn on Low Power Mode, or choose Turn On For and select one, two, or three days.
You can also use Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode. Depending on the watch and conditions, Low Power Mode can turn off Always-On display, background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements, some heart-related notifications, background app refresh, Live Activity updates, Double Tap, wrist flick, and some Wi-Fi or cellular behavior when the iPhone is not nearby.
It normally turns off automatically at 80 percent charge unless you selected a multi-day duration. Complications can still refresh even when an app’s general Background App Refresh setting is disabled, so reducing unnecessary complications may help with battery drain too. Review the complete list of Low Power Mode changes.
7. Download offline maps before leaving service
Best for: hiking, travel, and areas with unreliable Wi-Fi or cellular coverage. Requires: advance download; availability and directions vary by region.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- On the iPhone, open Maps.
- Tap your picture or initials beside the search field.
- Tap Offline Maps and download the desired area or route.
- Turn on Sync with Apple Watch.
On the watch, open Maps, tap the Search button, tap your picture or initials in the upper-right corner, then tap Offline Maps. Maps under On This Watch remain available when the iPhone is not nearby.
Offline maps do not provide universal offline access. The map must have been downloaded, you must remain within its coverage area, and the feature must be available in your country or region. They also do not guarantee cellular communication or emergency service. Carry appropriate equipment for remote trips. Apple’s offline-maps instructions.

8. Configure safety features before you need them
Best for: everyday safety, solo exercise, and outdoor trips. Limitations: features depend on model, settings, location, network availability, and sometimes a nearby iPhone or cellular plan.
Before an emergency, review Emergency SOS, Fall Detection, Crash Detection where supported, Medical ID, emergency contacts, location sharing, Check In, Backtrack, and outdoor waypoints. Make sure your emergency contacts and medical information are current, and understand whether your watch can reach help through a nearby iPhone, Wi-Fi, or cellular service.

9. Make the watch quieter with Focus and notification controls
Best for: owners overwhelmed by iPhone notifications appearing on the wrist.
In the iPhone’s Watch app, review notification settings and disable alerts from low-value apps. Keep calls, important messages, calendars, medication reminders, and safety or health alerts that you genuinely need. Then use Focus modes for work, sleep, exercise, driving, and personal time.
The goal is selective filtering, not necessarily turning everything off. Too many alerts are distracting and may use more battery; too few can make you miss an important reminder. A focused watch face with only relevant complications, combined with a customized Smart Stack, often gives you useful information without a constant stream of interruptions.
10. Master Apple Pay, Water Lock, and accessibility controls
Apple Pay
Double-click the side button to display your payment cards, authenticate, and hold the watch near a contactless reader. Availability depends on your country, bank, card network, and merchant. It is particularly useful for short errands when carrying an iPhone is inconvenient.

Water Lock
- Press the side button to open Control Center.
- Tap the Water Lock icon.
- When finished, press and hold the Digital Crown until the watch unlocks and ejects water from the speaker.
Water Lock prevents ordinary touch input while active and may turn on automatically for supported water-based workouts. Double Tap and wrist flick are unavailable during Water Lock. Water Lock is an input-locking and speaker-ejection feature; it is not a guarantee that the watch is waterproof. Follow Apple’s water-resistance guidance for your model. Water Lock instructions.
Accessibility
Explore AssistiveTouch, VoiceOver, Zoom, larger text, and alternate gestures under the watch’s accessibility settings. These can make the watch easier to operate when standard taps, swipes, or button presses are difficult. Some accessibility hand-gesture settings can conflict with Double Tap, so check them when troubleshooting.
Troubleshooting the most common failures
Double Tap does nothing
- Wake the display.
- Confirm the watch is unlocked and worn snugly.
- Check Settings > Gestures > Double Tap.
- Confirm Wrist Detection is enabled.
- Turn off Low Power Mode, Sleep Focus, Theater Mode, and Water Lock.
- Check for conflicting accessibility gestures.
- Update and restart the watch, then try again while stationary.
Offline maps are missing
Confirm the area was downloaded on the iPhone, Sync with Apple Watch was enabled, and the map appears under On This Watch. Also check that you are inside the downloaded region and that offline maps are supported where you are. A map listed only under On Your iPhone still depends on the iPhone being nearby.
The battery drains too quickly
Check Battery settings and battery health. Review cellular use, streaming, GPS, long workouts, and frequently refreshing complications. Remove nonessential complications, reduce background refresh for apps you do not need, and use Low Power Mode for long activities. Use Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings only when the loss of workout detail is acceptable.
A feature shown online is missing
The cause may be a different watch model, an older watchOS or iOS version, regional or regulatory limits, GPS versus cellular hardware, Family Setup, or an active mode such as Low Power Mode or Water Lock. “Compatible with watchOS 26” does not mean every watch receives every feature.
The iPhone is not nearby
Workouts, alarms, timers, the stopwatch, activity goals, stored cards, and other offline functions can continue to work. Calls, messages, streaming, maps that were not downloaded, and other online services depend on Wi-Fi, cellular service, or the iPhone’s Bluetooth connection. Apple explains what Apple Watch can do without an iPhone nearby.
Quick Recap
What to prioritize on different Apple Watch models
- Series 6–8: prioritize Smart Stack, workouts, sleep, maps, Focus, Apple Pay, safety features, and battery controls. Do not assume Double Tap support.
- Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2: add Double Tap, Camera Remote controls, offline maps, health tracking, and battery-management features to that list.
- SE 2: concentrate on core watchOS functions, workouts, sleep, Focus, safety, and battery management; qualify the absence of some premium health sensors.
- SE 3: include Double Tap when the required software and regional conditions are met.
- Series 11 and Ultra 3: use watchOS 26 features, while separating software capabilities from hardware-exclusive sensors, connectivity, and outdoor features.
- GPS-only models: download maps, store media and cards, and understand what remains available offline.
- Cellular models: can be more independent from the iPhone, but require carrier activation and usually a recurring plan.
