The update added new training, sleep and smartwatch functions alongside a substantial set of bug fixes. The “over 30 improvements” description refers to the combined changelog—new features, refinements, fixes and translations—not more than 30 major new features.
Important: Version 12.70 is now a historical update, not the latest firmware. Garmin’s support material lists later releases, including Version 17.37 for the Forerunner 570 in July 2026. Check your watch or Garmin’s software support page for the current version.

The changes most likely to matter
| User | Most useful changes |
|---|---|
| Runners | Track-run suggested workouts, timing-gate auto laps, race-start access from the Morning Report and elapsed-time personal records. |
| Sleep-focused users | Bedtime recommendations, improved Evening Report content, the early alarm and fixes affecting Breathing Variations data. |
| Strength athletes | Automatic rest timers reduce manual button presses between sets. |
| Cyclists | The Forerunner 570 gained Power Guide for cycling activities. |
| Outdoor users | The Forerunner 970 received a fix for a possible route-recalculation failure during navigation. |
| Everyday smartwatch users | Calculator, Stocks, focus modes, Voice Notes and improved call or assistant audio behavior. |
| Race spectators | Compatible spectator messages can play through the watch speaker. |
Fixes and refinements
Version 12.70 also addressed issues involving optical heart-rate readings, watch-face display glitches, missing Breathing Variations data, notification-dismissal artifacts, muted audio during calls or phone-assistant use, corrupted displays, unpinned timing gates, elevation-chart spikes, Do Not Disturb settings, assistant responses after notifications, AutoShot golf-shot detection, Connect IQ data-field saving, reboots, Evening Report behavior, general interface sluggishness and battery-saver prompt timing.
These fixes are one reason the update was more significant than a simple feature drop. However, their impact depends on how each owner uses the watch; a runner who never navigates or uses voice functions may notice little beyond the training and sleep additions.

Forerunner 570-specific changes
- Additional motorsport activities.
- Power Guide for cycling activities.
The Forerunner 570 is Garmin’s less expensive performance-running model. It launched in 42 mm and 47 mm sizes with an AMOLED display, five-button controls, speaker and microphone, multiband GPS, SatIQ, PacePro, training-readiness metrics and triathlon-focused features.
Forerunner 970-specific changes
- A watch-face data field for Running Tolerance.
- A fix for possible route-recalculation failures while navigating.
- A fix for Expedition activity potentially disabling the phone assistant and voice commands.
- Speaker playback for spectator messages.
The 970 remains the higher-end model, adding built-in maps, premium sapphire-and-titanium construction, a flashlight and additional running metrics. Garmin launched it as a 47 mm watch.

Should owners install it?
Yes—when Version 12.70 is the update being offered, it is a worthwhile installation because it combines useful training and sleep functions with stability fixes. It is not necessary to seek out 12.70 specifically in 2026, however: owners should install the newest compatible firmware offered for their watch instead.
Feature availability is not identical between the 570 and 970, and some Garmin functions depend on a compatible phone, Garmin Connect, region, an accessory or a subscription. For example, the 970’s Running Economy and Step Speed Loss features require Garmin’s HRM 600 heart-rate monitor. Wellness features such as Breathing Variations are not medical diagnostics; Garmin states that its Pulse Ox feature is not a medical device.

How to update a Forerunner 570 or 970
- Keep the watch paired with the Garmin Connect app.
- Synchronize the watch while the phone and watch remain connected.
- Accept the watch’s update prompt when it appears.
- Alternatively, connect the watch to a computer and use Garmin Express.
- After installation, verify the software version in the watch’s system or software settings.
Garmin says updates can download in the background and that rollout timing may take about a week. Menu names can vary by firmware and language, so use the labels shown on your watch rather than relying on one universal menu path.

Should buyers choose the 570 or 970?
Version 12.70 should not be the reason to buy either watch in 2026: it is free software and has been superseded by later firmware. Compare the hardware and current selling price instead.
- Choose the Forerunner 570 if you want AMOLED, advanced training and triathlon tools, speaker and microphone functionality, and a choice of 42 mm or 47 mm sizing without paying for built-in maps.
- Choose the Forerunner 970 if built-in maps, a flashlight, premium materials or its higher-end running metrics justify the additional cost and 47 mm size.
At launch on May 15, 2025, Garmin listed suggested retail prices of $549.99 for the 570 and $749.99 for the 970, with claimed smartwatch-mode battery life of up to 11 and 15 days respectively. Those are launch specifications, not current prices.
For less running-focused buyers, the vívoactive 6 is a more general health-and-fitness alternative, while the Venu 4 is the more lifestyle-oriented option. Garmin’s later compatibility documents show that feature support varies by model; no update should be assumed to provide complete parity across the lineup.

The headline was accurate for August 2025: Version 12.70 delivered more than 30 combined changes to Garmin’s Forerunner 570 and 970, including meaningful improvements for track runners, sleepers, strength athletes, cyclists and navigators. It did not add more than 30 major features, did not alter the watches’ hardware, and should not be presented as current firmware today.
