It is not a smartwatch-style sensor: it has no live electronic tracking, battery or Bluetooth connection.
What the Gatorade Gx Sweat Patch measures
The patch sits on the inner forearm and samples sweat from that small area. Its channels provide a local sweating-rate signal and a chemical reading related to sweat chloride concentration. The Gx app uses those readings and prediction algorithms to estimate whole-body sweat rate, fluid loss and sodium loss, then offers hydration guidance. Gatorade describes the consumer outputs; the Gatorade Sports Science Institute explains the underlying measurements.
That distinction matters: the patch does not directly collect or measure all the sweat or sodium lost across the body. Its chemical channel responds to chloride; the app estimates sodium loss from regional measurements. It is not a general-purpose sweat analyzer for glucose, cortisol, toxins or disease markers.
How the patch works
The Gx Sweat Patch is a passive microfluidic and chemical sensor. Sweat moves through tiny channels, changing their appearance; the user photographs the patch in the app, which analyzes the image. An orange dye in one channel indicates how quickly sweat moves through it, while a colorimetric reaction in another channel estimates sweat chloride concentration. A Nature Reviews Bioengineering overview discusses the device as a commercial example of wearable microfluidic sensing.

#1 Best Overall
- Includes 2 Gatorade GX Sweat Patch Single Use Sweat Tests
- Measure sweat rate, fluid loss, and sodium loss
- Uses non-toxic food dyes for measurement
- Apply patch to clean and dry inner-left forearm
- Certified hypoallergenic adhesive
Because the app reads a photograph after exercise, the patch does not stream data while you work out or monitor hydration status continuously. Its result is a post-exercise estimate, not a live alert.
How to use it
Gatorade’s instructions specify a workout lasting 20 minutes to two hours, in an ambient temperature of 47°F to 95°F. For a useful comparison later, test an activity you regularly do and save its profile for similar sessions.

- The information below is per-pack only
- Includes (1) 30oz Gatorade Gx Refillable Squeeze Bottle
- Fuel your game with Gatorade’s new customizable hydration platform
- Add water to your custom Gx bottle, empty a formula pod and start fueling wherever you go
- Make it your own with customizable ID ring
- Download the Gx app and select the activity you plan to test, such as running, cycling or basketball.
- Clean the inner left forearm. Remove lotion, sunscreen and spray tanner from the patch area, then let the skin dry fully.
- Place the patch about 2–3 inches from the elbow crease. Press firmly for 10 seconds to seal it.
- Exercise with the patch in place, staying within the stated duration and temperature ranges.
- Before cooling down, photograph the patch in good light using the app while it is still attached to your arm. Follow the app’s prompts to save the resulting sweat profile.
These steps follow Gatorade’s use instructions and its support guidance on placement and preparation. GSSI says tattoos are not necessarily a barrier and shaving is generally unnecessary, although dense hair may interfere with adhesion.
How accurate is it?
There is published validation work, but the result remains an estimate derived from a small regional sample and an algorithm—not an exact laboratory measurement of whole-body losses. PepsiCo says more than 400 athletes took part in development testing across several sports; that is a company-reported development figure, not an independent accuracy guarantee. Its 2021 account of the product’s development also describes launch-era U.S. availability.

A peer-reviewed comparison in elite male basketball players reported similar local sweating-rate and sweat-chloride results between the Gx device and a standard absorbent-patch method. That supports the device’s local readings in the studied setting; it does not establish that every app estimate will precisely predict whole-body losses for every person or workout. Separate work cautions that regional sweat rates do not always provide a sufficiently accurate or reliable basis for whole-body fluid-intake recommendations (regional-versus-whole-body sweat-rate study). Sweat-sodium prediction from regional samples has its own model limitations, as discussed in a cross-validation of prediction equations.
Treat the app’s output as a practical starting guide for comparable workouts, not a medical diagnosis or a definitive hydration prescription. A sports-performance lab or qualified practitioner may be preferable when controlled, higher-stakes testing is needed.

Why a test can fail or mislead
- Poor adhesion: Lotion, sunscreen, spray tanner, a damp arm, dense hair or insufficient pressure can keep the patch from sealing properly.
- Too little sweat: A low sweater may need more time within the permitted workout window before enough color develops.
- Overfilled channel: If sweat fills a channel completely, the test may be invalid or hard to interpret.
- Late or poor-quality scan: Scan before cooling down and while the patch is still on your arm. Bad lighting or movement can also interfere with image capture.
- Different activity or conditions: Heat, humidity, intensity, duration, clothing, fitness and heat acclimatization affect sweat output. A profile from one sport or environment may not transfer cleanly to another.
If the patch does not adhere or the channel overflows, do not treat the result as a normal reading. Gatorade’s instructions and official product reviews describe practical issues users may encounter, including results affected by very long sessions.

The patch is most relevant to athletes who train repeatedly—particularly endurance athletes, people exercising in heat, and athletes or coaches seeking an individualized starting estimate for fluid and electrolyte replacement. It can also appeal to someone who wants an app-mediated test rather than collecting measurements manually.

It is less compelling for short, easy workouts, for people who already estimate fluid loss through consistent pre- and post-exercise weighing, or for anyone expecting continuous tracking or medical-grade diagnosis. The consumer patch is single-use, so repeated testing adds cost.
Alternatives and price
A reusable, low-cost alternative is to weigh yourself before and after exercise, record fluid consumed and urine produced, and calculate approximate sweat loss. Gatorade’s Performance Partner handbook describes pre- and post-exercise weighing as a conventional fluid-loss estimate. This approach can indicate overall fluid loss but does not tell you sweat-electrolyte composition.
For readers asking whether the patch is still sold, Gatorade’s product page listed a two-pack at $12.50, reduced from $24.99, when observed on August 18, 2026. That was a sale price, not a guaranteed ongoing price; stock, promotions and geographic availability can change. See the Gatorade Gx Sweat Patch page for current listing details. The patch’s result depends on the Gx app, which receives the image and provides the profile; Gatorade’s Gx App page describes that software layer.
