How Much REM Sleep Is Normal on Garmin?

Many adults spend roughly 20%–25% of total sleep in REM, but Garmin estimates stages rather than measuring them directly. Learn how to calculate your percentage and interpret trends.

For many adults, REM sleep accounts for roughly 20%–25% of total sleep—about 96–120 minutes in an eight-hour night. That is a broad sleep-laboratory reference, not a Garmin target: Garmin estimates sleep stages from sensor data rather than directly measuring brain activity and eye movements. Treat its REM number as an approximate trend, not a pass/fail result.

What is a normal amount of REM sleep for adults?

In adults, REM sleep commonly makes up about 20%–25% of total sleep. The range is a population reference, not a precise goal for every person. Age, sleep loss, alcohol, medications, illness, stress, and disrupted sleep can all affect the amount recorded. Sleep architecture also changes with age, so this adult range should not be applied as a target for children or teenagers.

Total sleep Broad adult REM reference
6 hours 72–90 minutes
7 hours 84–105 minutes
8 hours 96–120 minutes
9 hours 108–135 minutes

These estimates reflect adult sleep physiology, not Garmin’s own medical threshold. The National Center for Biotechnology Information’s overview of sleep stages describes REM as a substantial part of adult sleep; the proportions vary between people and across the night.

Does Garmin have a normal REM target?

Garmin does not publish one universal REM target for every user, watch, age group, or software version. Its stage chart is an estimate, so a night outside the broad adult range does not by itself mean your sleep is abnormal. Your pattern across multiple nights is more useful than a single reading.

Garmin’s Sleep Score is a separate 0–100 estimate based on overall sleep inputs, including duration, stages, awake time, restlessness, and overnight stress-related data. Garmin’s published bands are excellent (90–100), good (80–89), fair (60–79), and poor (below 60). A high score does not prove that your REM amount is medically normal, and the score bands are not REM targets. See Garmin’s Sleep Score guidance.

How to calculate your Garmin REM percentage

Use actual sleep time, not the time you spent in bed:

REM percentage = REM minutes ÷ total sleep minutes × 100

  • 90 minutes of REM during 8 hours of sleep: 90 ÷ 480 × 100 = 18.75%.
  • 2 hours of REM during 8 hours of sleep: 120 ÷ 480 × 100 = 25%.
  • 45 minutes of REM during 6 hours of sleep: 45 ÷ 360 × 100 = 12.5%.

If you were in bed for eight hours but Garmin estimates that you slept for six hours and 45 minutes, use 405 minutes as the denominator. Using time in bed instead can make the REM percentage look lower than it is relative to the sleep Garmin recorded.

Why might Garmin show low REM?

A short night or an early wake-up

REM periods tend to become longer later in the night. If you wake early, sleep only a few hours, or have a late bedtime followed by a fixed morning alarm, you may lose more of the REM-rich later sleep. This can happen with jet lag, shift work, sleep deprivation, or an unusually early start. The NCBI overview of sleep regulation and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s sleep-stage guide explain how stages change across the night.

Fragmented sleep or an unusual night

Frequent awakenings can disrupt sleep and affect the stage estimates. Alcohol, illness, stress, and some medications can also change sleep patterns. Compare the chart with what happened that night rather than treating the REM number in isolation.

Sensor data or stage-classification errors

A loose fit, watch movement, poor optical heart-rate contact, or incomplete heart-rate variability data may reduce the quality of signals used for stage estimates. Even with good sensor contact, the algorithm can classify REM as light sleep or wake. A stage chart that looks unusually abrupt or implausible is not proof that your sleep followed those exact stages.

Incorrect sleep window or multiple Garmin devices

An inaccurate bedtime or wake time can affect the interval Garmin analyzes. If you own multiple Garmin devices, wearing something other than your designated Primary Wearable to bed can also lead to missing or unexpected sleep data. Nap handling varies by watch; only watches with nap tracking add naps to sleep statistics, and sleep periods longer than three hours can start new sleep-statistic tracking, according to Garmin’s sleep-tracking support guidance.

How accurate is Garmin REM tracking?

Garmin estimates sleep stages using indirect signals such as optical heart rate, heart-rate variability, movement, and—on some devices—respiratory data. It does not directly record the brain waves, eye movements, and muscle tone used to stage sleep in a clinical polysomnogram. Garmin’s sleep-tracking explanation describes the signals its technology uses.

In one independent validation study of six consumer wearables, the tested Garmin device correctly identified about 50% of REM epochs scored by polysomnography. That result applies to the device and study conditions tested; it is not a universal accuracy figure for every Garmin model or current software version. The study supports caution with exact nightly stage minutes, not the conclusion that wearable trends are useless. Read the validation study.

Stage classification is harder than broadly distinguishing sleep from wake: a watch can estimate that you were asleep while assigning the wrong stage. Garmin REM, another brand’s REM estimate, and a clinical sleep-study result are therefore not necessarily interchangeable.

How to improve Garmin sleep readings

  1. Wear the device for at least two hours before bed. Garmin lists this as part of its sleep-tracking guidance.
  2. Keep optical heart rate enabled during sleep. The watch needs heart-rate data for its estimates.
  3. Check your normal sleep schedule. In Garmin Connect or on the watch, verify the bedtime and wake time used for your sleep window. Labels and locations vary by model, app version, and language.
  4. Use the designated Primary Wearable. If you own multiple Garmin devices, wear the one set as primary to bed.
  5. Wear the watch snugly and consistently. It should maintain sensor contact without becoming uncomfortable. A loose band, watch movement, sleeping position, or obstructed blood flow may affect overnight signal quality.
  6. Sync after waking and check for updates. This helps ensure the night’s data reaches Garmin Connect and the device has current software.

If Garmin records no sleep or implausible stages, first confirm that you wore the watch, optical heart rate was enabled, the sleep window is correct, and the right device was used. Then check fit, sync, and updates. Unusually long stillness, travel, illness, or an irregular schedule may also help explain a strange chart. Garmin says sleep duration can sometimes be added manually in Garmin Connect when data are missing, but a manually entered duration does not recreate reliable sleep-stage data. Should you try to increase your REM?

Not simply to reach a number on the chart. More estimated REM is not automatically better sleep, and it is not a target to maximize. Sleep quality also depends on getting enough total sleep, reasonable continuity, regular timing, and adequate NREM sleep, as well as how you feel and function during the day. An unusually high estimate may reflect normal variation, recovery after sleep loss, or misclassification.

For healthy adults aged 18–60, the AASM and Sleep Research Society recommend regularly obtaining at least seven hours of total sleep; that recommendation concerns sleep duration, not a REM percentage. The consensus recommendation also notes that more than nine hours may be appropriate in some circumstances.

When should you talk to a clinician?

Consider seeking professional advice if an unusual pattern persists for weeks, especially if you also have excessive daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, gasping, witnessed breathing pauses, morning headaches, insomnia, or a sudden major change in sleep. Discuss relevant medication changes, mood changes, neurological symptoms, or other health concerns with a clinician as well.

Garmin data cannot diagnose sleep apnea, narcolepsy, REM sleep behavior disorder, depression, or another medical condition. Do not change prescribed medication based on a sleep-stage chart, and do not use a wearable as a substitute for clinical evaluation when symptoms are concerning.
