On most Garmin watches, turn off Auto Lap in the settings for the activity you record: hold UP or MENU → Activities & Apps → choose the activity → its settings → Auto Lap or Laps → Off. The button and menu names vary by model. Change the profile you actually use; turning it off for Run may not turn it off for Track Run or Bike.
What Auto Lap does—and what it does not do
Auto Lap creates a lap automatically when you reach a configured distance, often one mile or one kilometer, so you can compare performance across sections. Some models also offer position-based laps. Garmin’s Forerunner 55 manual describes distance-based Auto Lap and its activity settings.

- Auto Lap creates laps automatically, by distance or, on some models, position.
- Auto Distance sets the interval between distance-based laps; it is not the on/off switch.
- Manual Lap marks a lap when you press the Lap button. Turning off Auto Lap does not disable manual laps.
- Lap alerts control how the device presents a lap, such as with sound or vibration. Silence an alert separately if you want lap records without the notification.
- Auto Pause pauses the timer based on movement. It is separate from Auto Lap and is not a substitute for switching Auto Lap off.
Turn off Auto Lap on most Garmin watches
- From the watch face, hold UP, MENU, or the model’s menu control.
- Open Activities & Apps. Some models put this under Settings.
- Select the activity you will record, such as Run, Trail Run, Bike, or Walk.
- Open that activity’s settings, sometimes labeled Activity Settings or Run Settings.
- Choose Auto Lap or Laps.
- Select Off, or switch off the Auto Lap toggle. If you see By Distance, By Position, and Off, choose Off.
- Return to the activity and, if you want to verify the change, record a short test activity.
Auto Lap settings are commonly attached to an activity profile rather than being a single device-wide switch. Garmin’s Forerunner 55 manual, for example, says the setting remains active for the selected profile until changed. Menu labels and feature availability differ by model and activity.
Menu variations by Garmin model
| Device family or model | Where to look | What to select |
|---|---|---|
| Forerunner 55 | Hold UP → Activities & Apps → activity → activity settings → Laps | Auto Lap, then turn off the Auto Lap control. The same area includes Auto Distance. Garmin’s January 2026 manual documents this path. |
| Forerunner 255 and similar performance watches | Hold UP → Activities & Apps → activity → settings → Laps → Auto Lap | Choose Off. On the Forerunner 255, By Distance and By Position are triggers, not disabled states. See the Forerunner 255 manual. |
| Instinct | Hold MENU → Settings → Activities & Apps → activity → activity settings | Open Auto Lap and turn it off. Auto Distance is a separate setting. The Instinct manual documents this structure; newer family models may label menus differently. |
| Venu, vívoactive and other touchscreen watches | Open the watch’s settings, then Activities & Apps → activity → activity settings | Look for the Auto Lap toggle or an Auto Lap submenu. The Venu Sq 2 manual documents the activity-specific control and notes that settings are not available for every activity. Venu 2 and vívoactive 4/4S manuals also document Auto Lap controls: Venu 2; vívoactive 4/4S. |
| fēnix, Enduro, MARQ, tactix and related watches | Typically hold MENU → Activities & Apps → activity → activity settings | Find Auto Lap, sometimes inside Laps, and select Off. The Enduro manual shows a direct Auto Lap menu and a separate Auto Distance control; consult the MARQ Athlete Gen 2 manual for that model. |
Edge cycling computers: use the model’s cycling profile settings
Do not assume the watch-button sequence applies to an Edge. Open the settings for the cycling profile you use, then look for Auto Lap, Laps, or Lap by Position. The exact path depends on the Edge model, so use its owner’s manual rather than relying on a universal sequence. Garmin directs owners to model-specific documentation for device settings in its support guidance.

If Auto Lap is still triggering
- Check the profile you actually started. Run, Trail Run, Track Run, Indoor Run, and Bike may have separate settings. Change the profile used for the activity, not just a similarly named one.
- Confirm the mode says Off. On models with multiple modes, By Position still creates automatic laps; it changes the trigger rather than disabling it.
- Look for a workout or interval notification. Structured workout steps can generate alerts that resemble lap notifications, even with Auto Lap disabled.
- Check for course timing gates. On compatible devices and courses, Auto Lap by Timing Gates uses course mile- or kilometer-points rather than the watch’s ordinary GPS distance. If those splits continue, edit or recreate the course with timing gates disabled. See Garmin’s timing-gates explanation.
- Consider a manual button press. An accidental press of the Lap button creates a manual lap regardless of the Auto Lap setting.
- Verify that the setting stayed off. Return to the same activity’s settings. If it will not persist, restart the device and check for available updates before considering more disruptive troubleshooting.
Turn Auto Lap off or change the interval?
Choose Off if you want to decide when to mark laps yourself or avoid automatic splits altogether. Keep Auto Lap on and change Auto Distance if you still want automatic lap data but prefer a different interval—for example, miles instead of kilometers, or a longer interval for fewer interruptions. The Forerunner 55 manual separates Auto Lap’s on/off control from Auto Distance; the options available depend on the device and activity.
Can you keep lap records but silence the alerts?
Yes, if your goal is to stop beeps or vibrations rather than stop automatic lap recording. Lap creation and notification behavior are separate concerns. Look in your model’s sound, alert, or vibration settings for the control that governs lap notifications; its location varies, so do not change Auto Pause or disable Auto Lap unless you also want to change lap recording.

Why Auto Lap may be missing
Garmin does not provide this control for every activity or every model. It may also appear under Laps rather than as a top-level setting. Check the manual for the exact device and activity; Garmin’s Forerunner activity-settings documentation and Venu Sq 2 manual both reflect model- or activity-specific availability.
Track Run and other special profiles
Track Run can use its own Auto Lap configuration. Garmin’s Forerunner 245 support page says that profile defaults to automatic laps at 1,600 meters and allows the setting to be changed or disabled. A setting changed under Run may therefore leave Track Run unchanged. See Garmin’s Track Run guidance. Pool Swim, open-water activities, workouts, navigation courses, and multisport profiles can likewise handle laps or alerts differently; availability depends on the profile and device.
