How long is a number 6 haircut?
In common guard systems, a number 6 leaves 3/4 inch (19 mm). In the same eighth-inch sequence, a number 5 is 5/8 inch (16 mm), and a number 7 is 7/8 inch (22 mm). Conair’s HC6000 manual documents those lengths, and Wahl lists its number 6 guide at 3/4 inch: Conair HC6000 instruction booklet and Wahl number 6 guide.

Do not assume every manufacturer uses the same scale. Braun UK’s guide gives its number 6 as 15 mm. Check the measurement printed on your guard or manufacturer’s guide; when booking a cut, ask for the desired length in millimetres or inches as well as the guard number. Braun UK’s guard comb guide.

The guard number describes a length setting, not the whole haircut. A uniform number 6 all over keeps roughly the same length across the head. A number 6 on top with shorter, faded sides creates a different shape. FashionBeans describes both options in its number 6 haircut guide.

To make your request clear, say whether the number 6 is for the entire head or just the top, then describe the sides separately. For example: “About 19 mm on top, with shorter faded sides.” If your clipper’s number 6 measures differently, use that actual measurement instead.
Ways to style the length
At this length, you can leave the hair natural, sweep it back, or work in texture. FashionBeans recommends molding paste for a matte finish and hold, gel for a more polished finish, and mousse or low-setting blow-drying to add volume. Those are editorial suggestions, not independently tested product comparisons; the result will depend on your hair and the product you use.

FashionBeans also suggests trimming every 6–8 weeks. Treat that as its maintenance recommendation, not a required schedule: how often to tidy the cut depends on how quickly your hair grows and how closely you want to keep its shape.

What you need to maintain a number 6 at home
The essential accessory for reproducing the length is a number 6 guide comb that fits your clipper. Confirm both compatibility and the guide’s actual measurement before cutting. Conair documents a number 6 attachment in its HC6000 kit. Wahl lists a 3/4-inch number 6 guide, but its page showed the guide out of stock when accessed, so availability may change.

Start with the longest attachment you intend to use, following Conair’s HC6000 manual guidance to remove less hair first. Move to a shorter guide only if you want a shorter result.
