Girard-Perregaux 1966 WW.TC: A Hands-On Guide to the 2017 World-Time Watch

The 1966 WW.TC is Girard-Perregaux’s dress-oriented, time-only take on world time, using a city ring and synchronized day/night disc instead of a chronograph and date.

The Girard-Perregaux 1966 WW.TC pairs a restrained dress-watch design with a 24-city world-time display. The 2017 time-only model drops the chronograph and date found on earlier WW.TC variants, leaving a city ring, a synchronized 24-hour disc and small seconds. Its appeal is straightforward: a more composed alternative to a sportier travel watch, with a two-crown display that takes a little care to set.

What is the 1966 WW.TC?

Girard-Perregaux introduced this expression at SIHH 2017 as a simpler member of the WW.TC family. Earlier versions combined world time with a chronograph and date; this model removes both complications. The result is a cleaner dial and a watch oriented toward dressier wear rather than a chronograph-heavy travel-watch look. Hodinkee’s introduction and The GP Chronicles identify the steel reference as 49557-11-132-BB6C and the pink-gold reference as 49557-52-131-BB6C. Confirm the reference on an individual watch before assuming its material, dial or strap configuration.

How does the world-time display work?

The outer city ring provides 24 city references, while the rotating 24-hour disc shows the corresponding time around the dial. A white half and a black half distinguish day from night; the display is designed to let the wearer compare time across the listed cities at a glance. Fondation Haute Horlogerie describes the split disc as a way to make day and night easy to read.

The two crowns divide the setting tasks. The crown at 3 o’clock sets the local time and its synchronized 24-hour display; the second crown, at 9 o’clock, aligns the city ring with the chosen local city. In practice, a reviewer at The GP Chronicles noted that the city disc rotates freely rather than locking into place, so it calls for careful alignment.

What are the dimensions and specifications?

Published hands-on accounts describe a 40 mm case about 12 mm thick. Hodinkee measured its steel specimen at 46 mm lug-to-lug, a useful fit measurement that is not established for every version. The core movement is from Girard-Perregaux’s automatic GP03300 family, with a world-time module. The exact caliber suffix and jewel count vary across source records, so they should be checked against the specific watch rather than treated as a single universal specification.

Specification What the cited sources report
Case 40 mm diameter and approximately 12 mm thick in review descriptions; Hodinkee measured its steel specimen at 46 mm lug-to-lug. Hodinkee review; Fondation Haute Horlogerie record.
Movement Automatic GP03300 family with world-time module. The GP Chronicles names GP 03300-0022; Hodinkee specifies GP03300-0027; Fondation Haute Horlogerie lists both 0022 and 0027. The GP Chronicles; Hodinkee review; Fondation Haute Horlogerie record.
Frequency and reserve Hodinkee reports 4 Hz and a 46-hour power reserve for its reviewed specimen. Hodinkee review.
Jewels Hodinkee lists 32 for its specimen; Fondation Haute Horlogerie lists 48 for its model record. The counts are source- and caliber-specific, not one settled figure for every variant. Hodinkee review; Fondation Haute Horlogerie record.
Water resistance Hodinkee reports 3 ATM; Fondation Haute Horlogerie lists 30 m. Both indicate modest resistance, not suitability for swimming. Hodinkee review; Fondation Haute Horlogerie record.

How does it wear?

The layout keeps the city ring, 24-hour disc and small seconds distinct without the extra subdials of a chronograph. On the steel specimen Hodinkee reviewed, the dial is silver opaline, the case is polished steel, the crowns are signed, and there is no lume on the dial. Time+Tide also described the display as clean and legible. These details apply to the specimens described; check the individual reference and configuration for a specific watch.

Hodinkee’s reviewer said the 40 mm watch wore comfortably on a seven-inch wrist, while The GP Chronicles praised the 1966 case’s lug shape and comfort. Those are useful impressions, not a fit guarantee: wrist shape, strap choice and the watch’s lug-to-lug span affect how it sits.

What are the trade-offs?

The 1966 WW.TC prioritizes a dress-oriented profile and a relatively simple world-time readout. That means it may suit someone who wants to track several time zones without a chronograph, but it will not provide the date or stopwatch functions found on some earlier WW.TC versions. Its 30 m/3 ATM rating is also a reason to treat it as a dress watch and keep it away from swimming.
