Its defining technical feature is a silicon escapement made up of the escape wheel, pallet lever and roller—not a fully silicon regulating system. The movement is 25.60 mm across and 4.28 mm thick; the brand specifies a minimum 55-hour power reserve.
What the GP4800 is
The GP4800 is Girard-Perregaux’s automatic base movement, announced on 23 September 2025, according to Monochrome Watches. The manufacturer describes it as entirely developed in-house. At 25.60 mm in diameter and 4.28 mm thick, it is a compact movement intended for wristwatches, with hours, minutes, central seconds and a date display.
Monochrome lists 163 components, 19 jewels, a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) and a 55-hour reserve when fully wound. Girard-Perregaux’s own specification is a minimum reserve of 55 hours. These are published specifications, not results of independent timing or power-reserve testing.
What is silicon in the escapement?
The escapement meters energy from the mainspring to keep the balance oscillating and the watch running. Girard-Perregaux says the GP4800’s escape wheel, pallet lever and roller are made of silicon. That distinction matters: Monochrome identifies the hairspring as conventional, so the sources do not support describing the movement as having a silicon hairspring or an entirely silicon oscillator.

The brand characterizes silicon as lightweight, exceptionally smooth, non-magnetic and resistant to wear. It says the material’s hardness and low friction are intended to support reliability and longevity. Those are manufacturer claims; the cited coverage provides no independent comparative test or quantified durability result.
How the balance and winding systems work
Rate adjustment and stop-seconds
The GP4800 uses a variable-inertia balance. Girard-Perregaux says the balance-spring length stays fixed while four white-gold screws on the balance rim are used to adjust the rate. The company reports balance-wheel inertia of 8 mg/cm² and says the arrangement helps mitigate the influence of shocks. A stop-seconds function halts the seconds hand when setting the time, allowing the wearer to synchronize the display more precisely.

Automatic winding
The oscillating mass is skeletonized 18K gold and runs on ceramic ball bearings. Girard-Perregaux describes a shock-absorber system and a ball-bearing clutch that winds the mainspring in one direction. The company says the arrangement is designed to reduce winding noise and counter shocks; the available specifications do not establish independently measured noise, shock resistance or service life.
Finishing and design references
Girard-Perregaux says the GP4800’s three bridges take inspiration from one of its 1867 pocket watches. The manufacturer lists rhodium-plated bridges with golden inscriptions, straight Côtes de Genève, diamond-bevelled edges, mirror-polished screw heads and a sandblasted visible mainplate. It also describes circular graining on the underside and says at least ten types of finishing are visible. These details reflect the brand’s account of the movement’s design and finishing.

Which watches use the GP4800?
At launch, Monochrome said the first watches were still to come. WatchTime’s 17 June 2026 collection report subsequently identified the automatic GP4800 in all four Laureato Fifty models it covered. The report describes stainless-steel watches in 36 mm and 39 mm sizes, rated to 150 m water resistance, with publication-era prices of €22,400–€23,800 and availability in June 2026. Those prices and availability are time- and market-specific, not a current worldwide quote.
WatchTime reports a 60-hour power reserve for those Laureato Fifty models, while the movement’s launch specification is a minimum 55 hours and Monochrome lists 55 hours fully wound. The sources do not explain the difference, so treat the 60-hour figure as WatchTime’s collection-context reporting rather than a confirmed revision to the base movement specification. Check the official specification for an exact reference and market before relying on it for a purchase.

What the launch means for watch buyers
The GP4800 gives Girard-Perregaux a compact, in-house automatic platform with a silicon escapement and a distinct balance-adjustment system. Its technical proposition is specific: three escapement components use silicon, while the hairspring is described as conventional. The materials and construction are interesting features, but the published information does not establish that the movement is more accurate, longer-lived or superior to a competing calibre.
For someone comparing GP4800-powered watches, the useful distinctions are the case size, dial treatment, date display, bezel setting and the model’s own stated reserve and price in the buyer’s region. The movement alone does not determine which Laureato Fifty is the better fit.
