The Seiko 7C46 Golden Tuna is a large, gold-toned professional dive watch with a black zirconia shroud and a quartz movement. The featured 7C46-7009 is a Japanese-market version; related 7010 and 7008 references have reported dial or hand differences. Its original depth rating describes the watch when properly tested—not the condition of a decades-old example today. Here’s how to identify one, understand its size, and assess a used watch before buying or swimming with it.
What is the Seiko 7C46 Golden Tuna?
Michael Stockton’s 2018 hands-on account places the 7C46 Golden Tuna in Seiko’s lineage of shrouded professional divers and dates the model’s introduction to 1985. The described 7C46-7009 has a gold titanium-nitride-coated main case, a black zirconia shroud, and a 1,000 m dial rating. These are details reported for the watch and model in that article, not a present-day condition assessment.
Stockton reports that the 7009 continued into the late 1990s or around 2000. That is a historical account, not an official Seiko production record. The watch he describes combines a monobloc-shrouded case with a Hardlex crystal, unidirectional bezel, vented rubber strap, and day/date display.
How to tell the 7009, 7010, and 7008 apart
Start with the reference, then check the dial, hands, and day wheel together. The distinctions below are reported by Fratello’s 2018 article; the available official manual covers calibre specifications, not definitive parts or regional specifications for these individual references.

| Reference | Reported distinction | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 7C46-7009 | Japanese-market version; the described example has a Japanese/English day wheel. | Compare the reference and day-wheel language with clear dial and calendar photographs. |
| 7C46-7010 | Described as the version made for other markets; the dial differs in its “SQ Seiko Quartz” marking. | Check the exact dial text and reference rather than assuming it matches a 7009. |
| 7C46-7008 | Described as a later successor with different hands and no Suwa symbol on the dial. | Inspect the hands and dial symbol; verify the reference against the seller’s photographs. |
For a definitive reference-level parts or market specification, seek a Seiko catalog or service document for that exact reference. Seiko’s official instruction index lists a 7C46 Analog Quartz Divers manual, but the cited calibre manual itself does not establish all the 7009/7010/7008 distinctions: Seiko’s instruction index.
How large is it, and how does it wear?
For the featured watch, Fratello reports a 49.6 mm diameter, 16.1 mm height, and approximately 50 mm lug-to-lug. Those figures are the article’s measurements, not an independent remeasurement. Stockton characterizes it as tall but relatively compact for a Tuna. The case height and broad footprint are the practical fit considerations: check how the watch sits on your wrist and whether it clears a shirt cuff before buying.

Stockton also reports gold-colored hour and minute hands, gold dial printing, and lume he found improved over the preceding 7549 generation. Treat the lume comparison as his observation, not a measured performance claim.
What does the 1,000 m rating mean?
Seiko’s 7C46 instruction manual distinguishes dial-rated 600 m and 1,000 m versions. It specifies water-testing pressures of 75 bar for the 600 m version and 125 bar for the 1,000 m version, and lists both as helium-gas resistant. The manual is available here: Seiko 7C46 instruction manual.

That specification is not proof that a particular vintage watch remains water resistant. Age, condition, prior service, and damage matter. A fresh battery—or a gasket replacement by itself—does not establish current water resistance. Before relying on one underwater, have it appropriately serviced and pressure-tested, and ask to see the result.
Battery and service: what Seiko specifies
For calibre 7C46, Seiko specifies an SR43SW battery and an approximate battery life of five years. The manual cautions that the actual time after purchase can be shorter because the battery is fitted at the factory. It recommends an authorized service center for replacement and says a new battery-change mark should be recorded on the case back.

What to inspect on a used Golden Tuna
Ask for sharp, well-lit photographs of the dial, hands, day/date display, case back, crown, and the entire shroud. For a remote purchase, request service paperwork and any pressure-test documentation rather than relying on a general claim that the watch was recently serviced.

- Reference and configuration: Confirm the case-back reference and compare the dial, hands, and day wheel with the reported distinctions for 7009, 7010, and 7008.
- Zirconia shroud: Stockton flags possible chipping from blunt impact. Examine the edges and surface closely; this is an inspection point, not a claim that every example is damaged.
- Crown coating: Look for wear through the gold coating that may expose steel, another condition the article notes can occur.
- Battery and service records: Check the case-back battery-change mark and ask when the movement was serviced. A battery-change date is not a pressure-test result.
- Strap: Check whether the vented strap is present and whether it is original or a replacement. Confirm compatibility for the exact reference rather than assuming any similar-looking strap fits.
- Water use: Request documentation of a current pressure test if you intend to use the watch in water. Without suitable current testing, treat the vintage depth rating as historical specification only.
