Goldman Sachs reportedly resumed or initiated coverage of The Swatch Group AG with a Sell rating and a CHF 174 price target on October 5, 2026. The call reflects concern that Swatch kept production capacity in place while demand was weaker, leaving more inventory and limiting margin recovery. Swatch’s own July 21, 2026 half-year report presents a more positive operating picture, saying sales momentum strengthened across price segments and continents and that second-half profitability should improve.
What Goldman Sachs is saying
The reported Goldman Sachs recommendation is a Sell, with a target price of CHF 174 per share. The date attached to the call is October 5, 2026, and a separate report identifies analyst Erwan Rambourg. The target is an equity-research opinion, not Swatch Group guidance and not a guaranteed future price.

The bearish argument centers on the relationship between demand and manufacturing capacity. Swatch maintained production capacity ahead of demand, according to reports attributed to AD HOC NEWS and other coverage. If factories continue producing while sell-through is soft, finished goods and components can accumulate. Higher inventory can require discounting, tie up cash and reduce the benefit of any eventual sales rebound. Fixed manufacturing costs also spread across fewer watches when volumes are below capacity, putting pressure on gross and operating margins.
Regional risks in the Sell case
The same reporting points to exposure to China and the Middle East. A slowdown in those markets would matter both because of local demand and because they are important destinations for luxury-watch distribution and tourism-related purchases. The reports do not establish a single quantified regional loss; they identify these markets as risks to the recovery that Goldman expects investors to discount.

Swatch Group’s operating update is more optimistic
Swatch Group’s official Half-Year Report, released July 21, 2026, says: “Swatch Group recorded a strong increase in sales, driven by a solid momentum across all price segments and on every continent.” Management also states that “The strongly marked acceleration observed in May and June, confirmed in July, enables better utilization of production capacity and will lead to a significant improvement in profitability in the second half of the year.”
That outlook directly addresses the capacity problem in Goldman’s thesis: stronger orders could allow existing factories to run more efficiently, reducing the fixed-cost burden per watch. It does not, however, prove that inventory has normalized or that the expected improvement will reach full-year earnings. Sales growth must convert into profitable sell-through rather than merely replenishing stock held by distributors.

Why the sales-growth figures need caution
Secondary reports disagree on first-half 2026 sales growth. One cites an 8.5% increase at constant exchange rates; another reports 2.0% year over year. Those percentages are not interchangeable: constant-currency growth removes exchange-rate effects, while a reported year-over-year figure includes them. The underlying official filing should be checked before either number is used as a definitive headline statistic.

Swatch Group’s 2025 results provide the starting point for judging whether a recovery is material. The company reported net sales of CHF 6,280 million, operating profit of CHF 135 million and net profit of CHF 25 million. The relatively small profit figures compared with sales illustrate why inventory, utilization and gross-margin changes can have an outsized effect on earnings.

A comparison with the current share price requires a live market quote, including the exchange and timestamp. The supplied reports do not provide one, so CHF 174 cannot be described here as an upside or downside percentage. Investors should compare the target with a contemporaneous Swiss exchange price rather than with a stale quotation or a EUR-converted figure.

What would validate or undermine the bearish thesis?
Evidence that would support Goldman’s view
- Inventory rising faster than sales or requiring larger markdowns.
- Gross or operating margins failing to improve despite higher revenue.
- Weak demand in China or the Middle East offsetting gains elsewhere.
- Production remaining above sustainable sell-through, leaving factories underutilized later.
Evidence that would support Swatch’s outlook
- May–July sales acceleration continuing through the second half.
- Better factory utilization translating into measurable margin expansion.
- Inventory growth slowing without unusual discounting or write-downs.
- Sales momentum broadening across price tiers and continents, as management describes.
Is Swatch Group stock a Sell?
Goldman Sachs says Sell, but that is one analyst view rather than a universal classification. The central decision is whether improving demand will arrive quickly enough, and at sufficient margin, to absorb capacity and inventory built during the weaker period. The company’s July outlook argues that the answer is yes in the second half; Goldman’s target assumes the operational repair may be slower or less profitable than management expects. The published consensus range shows that analysts disagree substantially, so the CHF 174 figure should be treated as a scenario valuation, not a forecast certainty.
