These are recommendations based on Google’s published specifications, not independent performance or battery tests.
What’s different between the Pixel Watch 5 and Pixel Watch 4?
The clearest published differences are software version, storage, phone compatibility requirements, and the Watch 5’s announced software and health features. Many headline hardware specifications—including display brightness and Google’s estimated battery life—are the same.

Figures are from Google’s [Pixel Watch 5 specifications] and [Pixel Watch 4 specifications]. Google describes battery life as variable with usage and enabled features. The slightly larger listed battery capacities in Watch 5 do not establish longer real-world runtime, and the word “Accelerated” in its processor listing is not a quantified speed comparison.
Watch 5 adds Gemini and Health Guardian features
In its August 12, 2026 announcement, Google describes the Watch 5 as adding proactive Gemini assistance, At a Glance updates, Health Guardian features, breathing emergency detection, and wellness trend summaries. Availability can depend on country, language, the Google Health app, an internet connection, and—in the case of certain features—a separately sold Google Health Premium membership. Check the requirements for the specific feature where you live before buying. These wearable features should not be treated as a diagnosis of a medical condition. What stays similar?
Display and sizes
Both generations are offered in 41 mm and 45 mm sizes. Google lists an Actua 360 display with custom 3D Corning Gorilla Glass 5, a 320 ppi AMOLED LTPO panel, always-on display, 1-nit minimum brightness, and peak brightness up to 3,000 nits for both models. Those are stated specifications, not a guarantee of identical viewing experience in every condition. Compare the size and fit you prefer rather than assuming the newer model has a brighter display.
Charging
Google lists its Quick Charge Dock for both watches and estimates about 15 minutes to charge from 0% to 50% for either size and generation. Its published charging intervals differ beyond that initial range by size; the figures above do not establish that one generation charges faster overall. Google says the dock needs a USB-C power adapter rated at least 7.5 W, which is not included. See Google’s technical specifications and accessory compatibility for dock and band details.

Connectivity and location
Both specification pages list LTE/UMTS variants, Bluetooth 6.0, Wi-Fi, NFC, Ultra-Wideband, satellite SOS communication, and dual-frequency GPS. Cellular functionality requires a separate compatible LTE service plan, and carrier compatibility is not universal. Satellite SOS is limited by model and region, so confirm that it is supported where you intend to use it. The presence of these specifications does not mean every service is available in every country or configuration.

Repair options
Google’s August 20, 2025 Watch 4 announcement described its battery and display as replaceable or serviceable. The Watch 5 announcement points to repair manuals and cautions that repair options may vary by region and availability. That does not establish that a particular part, local repair provider, or warranty coverage will be available to you. Which Pixel Watch should you buy?
Buy the Pixel Watch 5 if its new features matter to you
Pick Watch 5 if you specifically want its announced Gemini assistance or Health Guardian features and have confirmed that the features you care about work in your region under your account and membership conditions. It also has twice the listed storage and the newer Wear OS version on Google’s current specification page. Google’s model name and processor wording alone do not establish a particular speed gain.
Buy the Pixel Watch 4 if the discount is meaningful
Watch 4 is the stronger value candidate when its current price is substantially lower and you do not need the Watch 5-specific software features or extra listed storage. Google’s stated battery estimates are the same for equivalent sizes, while both models share the listed display brightness and several other core specifications. Consider the price difference against the features you would actually use rather than paying more simply for the newer generation.

Match size and connectivity before comparing prices
Choose 41 mm or 45 mm based on fit, comfort, and display preference. Google’s own battery estimates vary more by size than by generation: the 45 mm model is rated for longer use than the 41 mm model in both standard and Battery Saver modes. Actual runtime varies with use and enabled features.
Compare the same size and Wi-Fi or LTE configuration at checkout. On October 12, 2026, Google’s US Store listed the Watch 5 from $399.99; the Watch 4 page showed a sale price from $249.99 against $449.99. These are time-sensitive US listing prices, configuration-dependent, and not reliable as current prices in another region.
