But it is no longer the latest major Pixel Watch software: Google later moved eligible devices to Wear OS 7 in 2026. The 2025 release remains important for understanding what changed, which watches received it, and why “Android 15” does not mean your paired phone was updated.
What the update actually was
Google began rolling out the update on March 4, 2025. It upgraded supported Pixel Watch 1, Pixel Watch 2, and Pixel Watch 3 devices to Wear OS 5.1. The wearable platform is based on Android 15 and uses API level 35, according to Google’s Wear OS 5.1 developer documentation.

That wording needs a qualification: this was a watch-platform update, not a full Android-phone update delivered to the watch. Wear OS is Google’s operating system for watches, and Wear OS 5.1 shares Android 15’s underlying platform and API level. It does not give a Pixel Watch every Android 15 phone feature, nor does the paired Android phone necessarily need to run Android 15.
The rollout was phased by device and carrier, so owners did not all receive it simultaneously.

As of 2026, Wear OS 5.1 should be treated as a historical release rather than Google’s current major Pixel Watch platform. Google’s later Wear OS 7 announcement introduced newer features including Android Live Updates on the wrist, improved battery-related behavior, and connected-device integration.
Which Pixel Watches received Wear OS 5.1?
Google listed these supported models for the March 2025 release:
- Google Pixel Watch
- Google Pixel Watch 2
- Google Pixel Watch 3
The update covered supported Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and LTE configurations, although timing could differ by carrier and device type. Google’s listed global builds were:

These build numbers identify the release but do not guarantee that every owner received it on the same date.
What changed in Wear OS 5.1?
Loss of Pulse Detection expanded in the US
Google expanded Loss of Pulse Detection to the United States for Pixel Watch 3 and said the feature had received US FDA clearance. It was not a universal feature for every Pixel Watch generation. Availability depends on the watch model, country, regulatory status, and rollout conditions. See Google’s March 2025 update announcement for the company’s stated availability.
Fitbit menstrual-health improvements
Google described improvements in the Fitbit experience for logging periods, viewing cycle status, and seeing predictions. These changes were tied to the Fitbit app and should not be understood as features supplied solely by the core Wear OS system.

Media controls were adjusted according to the content being played. Google cited podcast playback in YouTube Music as an example. Because media apps can update independently, installing the system update alone may not make every new control appear immediately.
Step-counting algorithm changes
Google said its step-counting algorithm was improved for situations such as pushing a shopping cart, using a wheelchair, or walking or running with a stroller.
This is Google’s description of an algorithm improvement, not independent evidence of a specific accuracy increase for every user. Real-world results can still vary by activity and how the watch is worn.
Automatic Bedtime Mode on Pixel Watch 2
The update expanded on-device automatic bedtime detection to Pixel Watch 2. Google described the feature as detecting when the wearer falls asleep and wakes up to control Bedtime Mode. It was not announced as a general feature for every Pixel Watch generation.

How to check for and install the update
- Place the watch on its charger.
- Make sure it has a Wi-Fi or LTE connection.
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Open System, then System updates.
- Check for an available update and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Leave the watch on its charger during installation.
Google said users would receive a watch notification when the software became available for their device. Because the rollout was staged, seeing “no update available” did not necessarily mean the watch was incompatible.

Menu wording can change between Wear OS versions, but the Settings → System → System updates route is the relevant version-neutral path for checking on the watch.
If the update does not appear
Try these steps in order:
- Wait for the rollout: availability could depend on the model, region, carrier, and connection type.
- Check charging and connectivity: keep the watch on its charger and connected to Wi-Fi or LTE.
- Restart the watch: then return to System updates.
- Update companion apps: check the Google Pixel Watch phone app, Fitbit, and relevant apps in the Play Store.
- Check storage: insufficient free space can prevent an update from downloading or installing.
- Avoid an immediate factory reset: resetting the watch is disruptive and is not the first-line solution for a phased rollout.
Do not sideload firmware casually. Google publishes official full OTA images for Pixel Watch devices, but using them requires careful matching of the exact watch model and build. Treat that page as an advanced recovery option, not the normal consumer installation method. A mismatched image or incorrect procedure can create additional problems.
The April 2025 follow-up update
The March release was followed by another Pixel Watch update. Google said the April 2025 update addressed cases in which users could not modify or add watch faces from the Pixel Watch mobile app, as well as delayed notifications.

For some devices already on the March 2025 software, the follow-up build was listed as BP1A.250305.019.W7, following the earlier .W3 build. This is a useful reminder that a major platform upgrade can be followed by model-specific or rollout-specific fixes. Details are in Google’s April 2025 update notice.
System updates and app updates are separate
Not every change associated with the March release came from the watch operating system itself. Fitbit features, media applications, Google Wallet, the Play Store, and the Pixel Watch phone app can update independently.
A watch may therefore show Wear OS 5.1 while an app still needs an update before a feature becomes visible. Conversely, a recent security patch or app version does not necessarily mean the watch is running the newest Wear OS platform.

Should you buy a Pixel Watch for Wear OS 5.1?
No. Wear OS 5.1 was a meaningful release for existing owners, but it is not a sensible standalone reason to buy a watch in 2026.
Existing Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2, or Pixel Watch 3 owners who want the 2025 feature set can keep and update their supported device. Buyers wanting current Google hardware and the longest likely software runway should evaluate the newest model, such as the Pixel Watch 4, against their needs for battery, health sensors, charging, repairability, cellular service, and current Wear OS support.
The Pixel Watch 3 may suit someone seeking Pixel integration without choosing the newest hardware. Buyers who prioritize Samsung-specific features, different sizes, battery-focused designs, or another price range should also compare current devices in the broader Wear OS ecosystem.
Health features should be assessed separately from the operating-system version. Their availability can depend on the watch model, country, regulatory approval, account, app version, and—in some cases—service requirements.
The bottom line
Google’s claim was accurate for March 2025: supported Pixel Watch 1, 2, and 3 devices received Wear OS 5.1, a watch platform based on Android 15. The update added model- and region-dependent health features, Fitbit improvements, media-control changes, step-algorithm changes, and automatic Bedtime Mode support on Pixel Watch 2. But it should not be described as Google’s latest Pixel Watch update now that Wear OS 7 has superseded it.
