Google’s First AI Smart Glasses Are Coming in Fall 2026—but They Won’t Have Displays

Google’s first Android XR Intelligent Eyewear is expected in fall 2026, but the first models will likely be audio-only rather than display-based AR glasses.

Google’s first consumer AI glasses are real and are expected to arrive in fall 2026. Previewed with Samsung at Google I/O on May 19, the first Android XR “Intelligent Eyewear” products will be made with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. They are expected to be camera-and-audio glasses powered by Gemini—not full augmented-reality glasses with displays in the lenses.

The key distinction: smart glasses, not display-based AR glasses

The first Google and Samsung Intelligent Eyewear models are expected to include cameras, microphones and speakers, but no lens displays. That means users should expect spoken assistance, not floating maps, text overlays or a heads-up display.

Google is also developing display-based Android XR glasses, but those are a separate, later-stage effort. A trusted-tester program for display glasses is planned during 2026; that does not establish a consumer retail launch date.

The closest product category is therefore camera-and-audio AI eyewear such as Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, rather than full spatial-computing hardware.

Current reporting describes the first generation as audio-only, while Google’s longer-term Android XR roadmap includes display glasses.

What Gemini-powered glasses are expected to do

Google and its partners have demonstrated or announced several hands-free features, including:

  • Asking Gemini questions about nearby objects, signs and places
  • Getting spoken navigation and location assistance
  • Making calls and handling messages
  • Receiving message summaries
  • Playing music
  • Taking photos and video
  • Using real-time translation and contextual assistance

A wearer might ask about a nearby restaurant, have a sign translated, request directions or check information without taking out a phone. These are announced capabilities and demonstrations, however—not a guarantee that every feature will work equally well at launch or in every country.

Because the glasses are designed as a phone companion, a compatible phone, app, account and network connection may be required. Exact offline behavior, subscription requirements and feature limitations have not been fully disclosed.

Contemporary coverage also reports iPhone support, but Google has not published a final compatibility matrix. Android and iPhone users should not assume identical features.

Who is building the glasses?

Partner Role
Google Android XR, Gemini and the software ecosystem
Samsung Hardware engineering and device development
Warby Parker Frame design, optical expertise and prescription-eyewear distribution
Gentle Monster Fashion-led frame design and eyewear collections

Samsung describes the glasses as a phone-connected companion with voice interaction and hands-free assistance. Warby Parker’s version combines its frame and prescription expertise with Google AI and Samsung hardware. The final products may be sold under eyewear-partner branding rather than as a conventional Google-branded device.

Two frame styles have been previewed, with broader collections expected at launch. The exact number of frames, colors, lens options and regional availability remains unknown.

Samsung’s announcement provides the current partnership and product overview, while Warby Parker’s official page describes its role and says the launch is coming “this fall.”

When will Google’s AI glasses launch?

The strongest current wording is fall 2026. Google and Samsung have not announced an exact day or month.

There is also no confirmed retail price, final commercial product name or complete country-by-country rollout. Warby Parker’s page is currently a preview and email-signup destination rather than an ordinary retail checkout page. “Coming this fall” should therefore be read as a planned launch window, not a guaranteed shipping date or proof that the glasses can already be bought.

Are these Google Glass 2?

No. Google Glass is useful historical context, but it is a misleading description of the new product.

Google Glass centered on a visible display and became associated with enterprise, experimental and privacy concerns. The 2026 Intelligent Eyewear strategy instead emphasizes ordinary-looking eyewear, fashion partnerships, prescription potential, voice interaction and ambient AI assistance. The first models are not display-centered augmented-reality glasses.

How XREAL AURA fits into Android XR

Android XR will support more than one type of glasses. XREAL AURA is a separate XREAL product that uses Android XR and Gemini, not Google’s Warby Parker or Gentle Monster eyewear.

Privacy is a launch-critical issue

Camera-equipped glasses can record in public, so privacy is not a minor specification. Google has described plans for a reliable recording-indicator LED, hardware intended to detect tampering, Android permission controls and additional security measures based on Android-phone protections.

The detailed behavior of those protections has not been published. Before buying, readers should look for clear answers to these questions:

  • Can the camera be disabled independently?
  • Does covering or tampering with the indicator disable recording?
  • Is audio captured continuously or only during specific interactions?
  • How are photos, video and AI requests processed and stored?
  • What happens when the phone or network connection is unavailable?
  • Can users control retention and deletion?

Restaurants, workplaces, schools, medical facilities and entertainment venues may prohibit camera-equipped eyewear regardless of the manufacturer’s controls. Open-ear speakers may also leak sound at higher volumes or become difficult to hear in noisy environments.

Google has discussed anti-tampering and recording protections, but these should be treated as planned safeguards rather than independently validated guarantees.

What Google has not announced

  • Final product name
  • Exact release date
  • Price
  • Battery life and charging-case design
  • Weight and frame dimensions
  • Camera resolution and recording limits
  • Required phone models
  • Gemini account or subscription requirements
  • Country-by-country availability
  • Offline functionality and storage limits
  • Water resistance, repairability and replacement-frame policies
  • Final prescription-lens range and insurance treatment
  • Complete privacy and data-retention policy

Warby Parker warns that compatibility, availability, age restrictions and some subscription-dependent features may vary. Those details matter as much as Gemini’s demonstrations for anyone considering prescription eyewear.

Should you wait for Google’s glasses?

Wait for Google and Samsung if you want ordinary-looking prescription or fashion frames, spoken Gemini assistance, calls, messages and photography, and you are comfortable waiting for pricing and compatibility information.

Consider XREAL AURA if a visible display, spatial anchoring and hand tracking are essential. It is closer to a portable XR computer than everyday eyewear, requires a compute puck and may cost close to $1,500 before tax.

Choose an existing camera-and-audio product if you need smart glasses immediately and want already-published battery, app and support information. Google’s products are not yet available for ordinary retail purchase.

Bottom line

Google has a genuine 2026 smart-glasses launch plan, but the first product is best understood as a Gemini assistant built into camera-and-audio eyewear. Samsung is handling hardware development, Warby Parker and Gentle Monster are contributing frame and fashion expertise, and Google is supplying Android XR and Gemini.

The expected fall 2026 glasses should not be confused with display-based AR hardware, Google Glass or XREAL AURA. Their appeal will depend on everyday comfort, prescription support, battery life, phone dependence, privacy controls and final price—details Google and its partners have not yet revealed.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
