Google announced its June 2024 Pixel Feature Drop on June 11, adding Car Crash Detection to Pixel Watch 2—not the original Pixel Watch. The update also improved bicycle-fall detection, added PayPal to Google Wallet on the watch, and expanded Google Home controls. These were Pixel Watch software and app updates, not a new major Wear OS release. Car Crash Detection is a backup safety feature: it may miss a crash, and a successful emergency call depends on connectivity and regional availability.
What changed for Pixel Watch in June 2024?
Google’s June 11 announcement covered Pixel phones, Pixel Tablet and Pixel Watch. For watches, the rollout began that day and continued in phases over the following weeks. Google listed software version TWD9.240605.001.A1 for Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 globally in its June 2024 update notes.
| Change | What it did | Availability or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Car Crash Detection | Could check on the wearer after a suspected severe crash and may call emergency services if there is no response. | Introduced for Pixel Watch 2 in this announcement; the original Pixel Watch was not listed for the feature. |
| Fall Detection | Updated to better detect falls from bicycles. | An improvement to Fall Detection, not a separate bicycle-safety mode. Falls can still be missed or falsely detected. |
| Google Home | Added access to Favorites, watch-face device shortcuts and controls for compatible smart-home devices, including certain temperature, lighting, blind and fan settings. | Google specified Wear OS 3 or newer, a Google Account, current Google Home apps on watch and phone, compatible devices, and internet and Wi-Fi. |
| Google Wallet | Added the ability to link a PayPal account for payments on the watch. | The June announcement specified the United States and Germany; a PayPal account was required. |
| On-wrist detection | Improved on-body/off-body detection for users with wrist tattoos. | Listed in Google’s June 2024 Pixel Watch update notes. |
The same Pixel Feature Drop also included phone and tablet changes, such as Recorder improvements, USB-C external-display support and Find My Device updates. Those were part of the broader Pixel announcement, not new Wear OS features.
Which Pixel Watch got Car Crash Detection?
| Model | Car Crash Detection in the June 2024 announcement? | What Google said |
|---|---|---|
| Original Pixel Watch | Not listed | Received the June Wear OS 4-era software update, but Google did not announce Car Crash Detection for it. |
| Pixel Watch 2 | Yes | The model specifically named for the new feature. |
| Pixel Watch 3 | Not applicable to that launch | Introduced later in 2024, so it was not part of the June announcement. See Google’s Pixel Watch 3 announcement for its launch context. |
| Later Pixel Watch models | Not applicable to the June 2024 rollout | For present-day compatibility, check Google’s current safety-feature documentation; later support should not be read back into the original announcement. |

How Car Crash Detection is meant to work
Google describes a sequence in which the watch uses motion and location information to identify a possible severe crash, then checks whether the wearer needs help. If the wearer does not respond, the watch may call emergency services. Emergency Location Service can provide location information during an emergency call, and Emergency Sharing may notify configured contacts with the wearer’s location.
- The watch detects a possible severe car crash.
- It alerts the wearer and checks for a response.
- The wearer can indicate they are okay or ask for help.
- If there is no response, the watch may automatically call emergency services, if the device and network can place the call.
- If Emergency Sharing is configured and available, designated contacts may receive an alert and location information.
The feature is not a guarantee that every collision will be detected or that help will be reached. Google warns that some crashes may go undetected and high-impact activities can produce false alerts. Do not test it by creating impacts or attempting dangerous driving maneuvers.
Does it work without a Pixel phone?
Google said Pixel Watch 2 could offer Car Crash Detection even when the wearer did not have their Pixel phone with them. That does not mean every watch configuration can make an emergency call independently. A Bluetooth/Wi-Fi model generally needs a nearby paired phone or another working internet connection for communications; an LTE model can be more independent but still relies on cellular coverage, service configuration and regional support. LTE is not a universal prerequisite for detection.

Google’s current guidance says a disconnected watch and phone may operate independently if both are powered on, and that both devices may check in when connected over Bluetooth. For a non-LTE watch, the paired phone may need to be nearby for emergency calling. A detected incident is not the same as a successfully completed call: weak or absent network service can prevent contact.

What needs to be in place?
- A supported Pixel Watch model with compatible software and the updated Personal Safety app.
- A Google Account used with the Safety app, with location enabled where required.
- A working cellular or internet connection for emergency communications. Emergency Sharing also depends on location, connectivity and local availability.
- For a non-LTE watch, a paired phone may need to be close enough to provide emergency calling.
- Emergency contacts configured in advance if you want Emergency Sharing to notify them.
- The watch powered on and worn. Car Crash Detection may not work in Airplane mode or when Battery Saver is enabled.
- Availability in a supported country and language; Google does not offer the feature everywhere.
Fall Detection and Car Crash Detection are safety aids, not replacements for a phone, emergency equipment, roadside precautions or emergency services.
How to enable Car Crash Detection

- On the watch: Press the crown, tap Safety, tap Car Crash Detection, then enable the feature.
- In the phone’s Safety app: Open Safety, tap Features, choose Car Crash Detection, then enable or configure it.
- In the Google Pixel Watch app: Open the app, tap Safety & emergency, then Car Crash Detection.
Google says settings are associated with the Google Account used in the Safety app and can sync across supported devices linked to that account. Configure Emergency Sharing and contacts separately rather than assuming they are active when crash detection is enabled.

If the watch raises an alert after an incident, respond promptly if you are able, including if it is a false alarm. Before relying on the feature, keep the watch charged, allow location access where required, and add emergency contacts if you want them notified. Do not rely on automatic contact when the watch is out of coverage, switched off, in a restricted mode or unable to detect the event.

Fall detection may miss some incidents, while high-impact activities or unusual motion can create false positives. Connectivity and regional availability also affect emergency calling; with a non-LTE watch, the paired phone may need to be nearby.

Should Pixel Watch 2 owners update?
For Pixel Watch 2 owners, the June 2024 update added a safety feature alongside bicycle-fall detection and practical Wallet and Home changes. The rollout was phased, so timing could vary. Owners of the original Pixel Watch received the update but should not treat Google’s June announcement as adding Car Crash Detection to their model.
Should you buy a watch for Car Crash Detection?
Do not buy a watch solely on the assumption that crash detection guarantees rescue. Consider whether the model is supported in your region, whether you need phone-free connectivity, whether your carrier supports the LTE watch, and whether you will keep it charged and configure emergency contacts. A Wi-Fi/Bluetooth model may suit someone who usually carries a phone; LTE may be worth considering for someone who often leaves it behind, but coverage and service configuration remain essential. Check Google’s current compatibility and availability information for the model and region you intend to use. Pixel Watch is not compatible with iPhones.
Google’s current support page describes broader compatibility than the June 2024 launch announcement. That later support is useful for checking a current device, but it does not change which watch Google named when the feature was introduced.
