Google did not announce that Fitbit is being discontinued. In August 2024, it rejected reports that it was ending Fitbit products and said new Fitbit products and innovation would continue. That was not a promise of a Versa 5 or Sense 3, however. Google’s current product lineup and leadership comments point to Pixel Watch as its main adult smartwatch, while Fitbit continues across trackers, health software, children’s wearables and other products.
What Google actually clarified
In August 2024, Google called reports that it was discontinuing Fitbit products “not correct” and said users would continue to see new Fitbit products and innovation. It cited the children’s Fitbit Ace LTE as an example. Ars Technica reported on Google’s response.
The statement addressed Fitbit products broadly. It did not name a successor to the adult Fitbit Versa 4 or Sense 2, promise a launch date, or commit to continuing those smartwatch lines. Google’s later product positioning makes the distinction important: Fitbit can remain an active brand even if Pixel Watch is the company’s main adult smartwatch direction.
Why the Fitbit smartwatch rumor seemed plausible
The Versa 4 and Sense 2 arrived in 2022, and no successor had been announced in the product cycle covered by the 2024 reporting. Meanwhile, Google launched Pixel Watch and described it as “our smartwatch part of the portfolio,” according to Android Authority’s report.

That shift was reinforced by reports that the newer Fitbit watches offered fewer traditional smartwatch capabilities than earlier generations, including reduced third-party-app and music functionality. Fitbit health features also became part of Pixel Watch’s proposition. These developments support the view that Google has deprioritized the old Versa/Sense approach; they are not an official announcement that those lines can never return.
What Google sells under Fitbit now
Google’s current US store catalog lists Fitbit Air, Charge 6, Inspire 3, Versa 4, Sense 2 and Ace LTE alongside Pixel Watch products. That range spans several different kinds of wearable, so “Fitbit is still making smartwatches” depends on what you mean by smartwatch. Google’s Fitbit overview shows the current lineup.
| Product | What it is | Who it may suit |
|---|---|---|
| Versa 4 | Fitbit-branded adult smartwatch with a fitness focus | Someone who wants a watch display and Fitbit-style tracking without prioritizing a broad smartwatch app ecosystem |
| Sense 2 | Fitbit-branded adult smartwatch with more health-oriented positioning | Someone interested in Fitbit health and stress features |
| Charge 6 and Inspire 3 | Fitness trackers | Someone who wants activity and health tracking rather than a full smartwatch |
| Ace LTE | Children’s smartwatch with LTE-connected features | Families seeking child-focused communication and location features, not adults looking for a Versa or Sense replacement |
| Fitbit Air | Screenless wearable for tracking and personalized coaching | Someone who prefers unobtrusive tracking; it is not a smartwatch with an on-wrist display |
| Pixel Watch | Google’s mainstream smartwatch line with Fitbit health tracking | Android users who want Google services and a fuller smartwatch experience |
Google presents Fitbit Air as a screenless tracker with personalized coaching, including Gemini-related coaching features. It should not be confused with a Fitbit watch. The Ace LTE’s US store page lists it at $179.99 and Ace Pass at $9.99 monthly or $119 annually; the pass provides LTE connectivity and related services. Those are US store prices and can change. Ace LTE is a children’s product, not evidence of a new adult Versa/Sense generation.

Are Versa 4 and Sense 2 still supported?
Google’s support table lists minimum security-update coverage for both Sense 2 and Versa 4 through at least February 2028. The published period is tied to the device’s last sale on Fitbit.com or the Google Store, and Google says dates may be extended if a product remains on sale through those channels. See Google’s security-support table for the exact terms and device dates.

This is a security-support commitment, not a promise of new features, a successor model, repair availability, or indefinite access to every service. The same table gives earlier minimum security dates for older watches: December 2025 for Versa 3 and Versa 2, September 2025 for the original Sense, and June 2026 for Luxe. As of August 2026, those dates have passed. They are minimum security-update dates, not stated shutdown dates for all device functions.
Sense 2 and Versa 4 were introduced in 2022. Google’s US launch prices were $299.95 for Sense 2 and $229.95 for Versa 4; those historical launch prices should not be read as current prices. Google described both as offering more than six days of battery life at launch. Google’s launch announcement has the original details.

What the Google Health transition means
Google says the Fitbit app began transitioning to the Google Health app on May 19, 2026, with the rollout running through May 26 and timing varying by account. The redesigned experience is organized around Today, Fitness, Sleep and Health. Fitbit and Pixel Watch users are included, making this a software consolidation rather than a hardware discontinuation.
The transition does not mean every Fitbit feature carries over unchanged. Google specifically says Snore Detection will no longer be available for Fitbit Sense and Versa 3 users. For other changes, check Google’s current feature and account guidance rather than assuming that a familiar Fitbit feature remains available. Google’s transition help page describes the rollout and documented changes.

The practical choice is between a fitness-oriented watch with longer stated battery life and a more fully featured Google smartwatch. They are not interchangeable, and the right option depends on your phone, app needs and tolerance for charging.

| Consideration | Fitbit Versa 4 or Sense 2 | Pixel Watch |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Fitbit fitness and health wearables | Google’s mainstream smartwatch direction |
| Battery | Google described Sense 2 and Versa 4 as lasting more than six days; actual use can vary | Check the specific model’s product page; the lineup’s exact battery figures vary by model |
| Apps and smartwatch features | More limited than earlier Fitbit generations, according to secondary reporting | Broader Google and Wear OS smartwatch experience |
| Health experience | Fitbit health features and Google Health app experience | Fitbit health tracking integrated into Pixel Watch |
| Phone compatibility | Check requirements for the exact Fitbit model and phone | Android-oriented; do not assume iPhone compatibility |
| Likely fit | Long battery life, fitness use and a simpler watch experience | Android users who want Google apps and a fuller smartwatch |
Compatibility is model-specific. For example, Google’s Charge 6 launch documentation specified Android 9 or later and iOS 15 or later; that does not establish the requirements for every Fitbit product. Pixel Watch is Android-focused, so iPhone owners should verify compatibility before considering it. Google’s Charge 6 announcement gives that model’s stated phone requirements, and Google’s Pixel Watch comparison page covers its watch lineup.

If you already own a Versa 4 or Sense 2
Keep using it if it still meets your fitness, health and battery needs, and you are comfortable with the Google Health transition. There is no evidence here of an immediate shutdown tied to Google’s broad 2024 clarification. Consider replacing it if you need a wider smartwatch app ecosystem, want newer Google smartwatch capabilities, or depend on a feature that is no longer available.
If you are buying a Fitbit-branded wearable
- Choose Versa 4 if you want a Fitbit-branded watch with a display and fitness-focused use.
- Choose Sense 2 if Fitbit’s health-oriented positioning is more important to you than a full smartwatch platform.
- Choose Charge 6 if a smaller tracker is enough; it includes built-in GPS and Google features including Maps, Wallet and YouTube Music.
- Choose Fitbit Air only if you want screenless tracking and coaching rather than apps or on-wrist interaction.
- Choose Ace LTE for a child-focused LTE and communication use case; include the recurring Ace Pass cost in the decision.
If you want Google’s fullest smartwatch experience
Look at Pixel Watch if you use Android and want Google services and a broader app experience. It is not a safe default recommendation for iPhone users, and buyers whose main priority is multi-day battery life should compare the specific model’s published figures with their needs.

If you use an iPhone
Check the phone requirements for the exact Fitbit model before buying. Pixel Watch should not be treated as a straightforward iPhone alternative; if iPhone compatibility is essential, verify it directly for every candidate rather than extrapolating from one Fitbit model.
So, is Google discontinuing Fitbit smartwatches?
Fitbit as a brand is not discontinued: Google still lists Fitbit products and publishes support information. But the 2024 denial did not confirm future adult Versa or Sense generations. The clearest reading is that Pixel Watch is Google’s primary adult smartwatch line, while Fitbit continues in trackers, health software, children’s wearables and other forms. A Versa 5 or Sense 3 remains unconfirmed; neither a launch nor a permanent end has been established by the cited announcements.
