On Fitbit, pace is the time it takes to cover one mile or kilometer. A reading of 10:00 per mile means it would take about 10 minutes to travel a mile; a lower pace number means faster movement. The unit depends on your distance setting, so check whether the activity is using miles or kilometers.
How to read a Fitbit pace number
Pace expresses time per distance: for example, minutes per mile or minutes per kilometer. Fitbit may write it with an apostrophe and quotation mark, as in 10'30". Those marks mean minutes and seconds—not feet and inches. Fitbit users have reported this notation as a common source of confusion (Fitbit Community).
| Display | Meaning |
|---|---|
9'23" per mile |
9 minutes, 23 seconds to cover one mile |
15'00" per kilometer |
15 minutes to cover one kilometer |
8'00" per mile |
Faster than 10’30” per mile |
A pace number without its distance unit is incomplete. A 12-minute mile and a 12-minute kilometer are very different speeds.
Which unit is Fitbit using?
The unit depends on your distance setting and the activity record. Check whether distance is set to miles or kilometers in your Fitbit/Google Health app or device. The precise menu path varies by app version, operating system, and model, so do not assume every screen uses the same labels. Current official help is hosted under Google Health, while some users still call the companion app the Fitbit app.

Does a lower pace mean faster?
Yes. A lower pace means fewer minutes to cover the same distance. For example, 10:00 per mile is faster than 15:00 per mile, which is faster than 20:00 per mile. A brisk walk might be around 15–20 minutes per mile, depending on the person and conditions; those figures are illustrations, not universal fitness targets.
Pace versus speed
Speed measures distance over time, such as miles per hour. Pace measures time over distance, such as minutes per mile. They describe the same movement from opposite directions, so pace falls as speed rises.

- 10:00 per mile = 6.0 mph.
- 12:00 per mile = 5.0 mph.
- 15:00 per mile = 4.0 mph.
- 6:00 per kilometer = 10 km/h.
- 12:00 per kilometer = 5 km/h.
For pace in whole minutes, use mph = 60 ÷ minutes per mile or km/h = 60 ÷ minutes per kilometer. For a pace with seconds, first convert to decimal minutes: 10 minutes 30 seconds is 10.5 minutes, and 60 ÷ 10.5 is about 5.71 mph. Runners often use pace to compare efforts over a fixed distance; people walking casually or cycling may find miles or kilometers per hour more intuitive.
Is the number current pace or average pace?
It depends on where you see it. A live workout screen may show current pace, which can change from moment to moment. A post-workout summary may show the average across the activity. Fitbit’s technical data dictionary defines pace as the calculated average pace during exercise (Fitbit Web API Data Dictionary). A map or workout detail may instead show a point, lap, or segment figure, so read its label and context before treating it as the whole-workout average.

- Long battery life: Google Fitbit Air’s battery lasts up to a week, and fast charging gets you one day of battery life in just five minutes[6,7]
Live pace can jump even when your effort feels steady because GPS distance estimates fluctuate. Average pace is less reactive, but it includes the time and distance recorded across the activity; a long pause can therefore make it slower.
Does Fitbit need GPS to calculate pace?
GPS is important for route-based distance and pace during outdoor activities. Fitbit devices differ: some have built-in GPS, some use the phone’s GPS, and some can choose dynamically between GPS sources. With phone or connected GPS, keep the phone nearby. The supported GPS arrangement depends on the model; Google’s device guidance lists model-specific options (Google Health GPS guidance).

- 【1.1" AMOLED Touch Color Screen】AMOLED HD touch color screen is designed with clear and bright display, providing you with high quality touch and visual experience. This smartwatch includes a large number of original dials and supports custom dials.
Built-in GPS works without relying on the phone, but can reduce device battery life. Phone GPS may preserve the tracker’s battery, but requires the phone to remain nearby. Dynamic GPS lets the device select a source when the workout begins. Google’s documentation describes GPS data for route, distance, pace, and related exercise information, and notes that GPS tracking is for activities involving outdoor physical distance (Google Health exercise tracking guidance).
For a treadmill or walking in place, an outdoor GPS workout is a poor match: your body is moving but your position is not changing along an outdoor route. Use an indoor or treadmill exercise mode where available. Devices and modes may estimate indoor distance or pace differently, so do not expect those figures to match outdoor GPS tracking exactly.

Why is my Fitbit pace unusually high or nonsensical?
- Little or no distance was recorded: If the activity has time but almost no distance, the resulting pace can become enormous. Fitbit Community users have reported figures around 156’55” during walking-in-place or treadmill scenarios recorded as outdoor Walk; this is a reported failure mode, not a formal diagnosis for every extreme reading (Fitbit Community discussion).
- Wrong exercise type: An outdoor GPS Walk or Run may not suit a stationary treadmill workout.
- GPS was not ready or lost signal: Starting before GPS connects, or losing signal under buildings or trees, can cause inaccurate distance, unstable pace, or gaps in the route. Google notes that GPS loss can leave route gaps or prevent a map from appearing (Google Health GPS guidance).
- The activity was very short: A small distance error has a large effect on pace over a short workout.
- You stopped without pausing: Time spent stopped can slow average pace, while live pace may behave erratically around a stop.
- The unit was misunderstood: Confirm whether the figure is per mile or per kilometer before comparing it with another workout.
- Device or app variation: Model, GPS mode, location permissions, app version, and distance settings affect what is recorded. One odd value by itself does not establish that a device is faulty.
How to get a more reliable outdoor pace reading
- Select the matching exercise. Choose Run, Walk, Hike, or Bike as appropriate. GPS is intended for activities where you cover physical distance outdoors; model-specific workout instructions are available in Google Health’s exercise guide.
- Enable the appropriate GPS option. Confirm the selected workout uses GPS if you want route-based outdoor distance and pace.
- Start outdoors with a clear view of the sky. Buildings, trees, and other obstructions can weaken or delay GPS.
- Wait for GPS to connect before starting, when possible. If you are using phone GPS, keep the phone nearby.
- Begin moving after the workout starts. This helps avoid recording setup time as part of the activity.
- Sync after the workout. Review the completed activity details in the Google Health/Fitbit app.
Google’s GPS guidance recommends allowing location access, waiting for a connection, and restarting the connection process when it does not connect. Exact controls differ across Charge, Inspire, Luxe, Sense, Versa, and Pixel Watch models, so use the instructions for your device rather than a universal menu path (GPS setup and troubleshooting).
What pace can—and cannot—tell you
Pace is useful for comparing walks or runs over the same distance, tracking a goal, or estimating how long a route may take. It is not a complete measure of effort: the same pace may feel different on hills, in heat or wind, on a different surface, or when you are tired. Heart-rate response and how you feel add context. A faster number is not automatically a better workout.
