Google’s Wear OS 3 Announcement With Samsung and Fitbit, Explained

Google’s Wear OS 3 announcement with Samsung promised a stronger platform, more apps, and Fitbit-informed health features. Here’s what shipped, what it meant, and why watch compatibility was not universal.

On May 18, 2021, Google announced that it was working with Samsung to build a unified smartwatch platform drawing on Wear OS and Samsung’s Tizen work. The plan paired Google services and developer tools with Samsung’s wearable expertise, promised better performance and battery life, and brought Fitbit health and fitness knowledge into Google’s wearable strategy. It was a platform announcement—not a promise that every existing Wear OS or Samsung watch would get the same software.

What Google announced at Google I/O

Google described three parts to the Wear OS overhaul: a platform developed with Samsung, a refreshed experience with more Google apps and services, and a greater role for Fitbit’s health and fitness expertise. Google said the combined work would bring faster app launches, longer battery life, and a more fluid experience, but it did not give one battery-life figure that applied to every watch. Google’s May 18, 2021 announcement framed the effort as a reset for the smartwatch ecosystem, not a routine update.

  • Platform: Wear OS and Tizen-related work would inform a unified system, with Google and Samsung contributing their services, software, and hardware experience.
  • Experience: Google announced refreshed apps and interactions, including changes to Google Pay, YouTube Music, and Tiles.
  • Health: Fitbit’s expertise would inform health-progress tracking and fitness motivation on the wrist.

What Samsung contributed—and what “unified” meant

The partnership did not mean Samsung simply installed an unchanged, stock version of Wear OS. Samsung brought experience developing smartwatch hardware and software, including work associated with Tizen’s performance and battery management. The first major commercial device to embody the new platform was the Galaxy Watch4, announced on August 11, 2021, as “Wear OS Powered by Samsung.” It combined Google’s platform services with Samsung’s One UI Watch interface and Samsung services. Google’s Galaxy Watch4 overview and Samsung’s launch announcement show how the collaboration became a product.

“Wear OS 3” describes the platform generation; “Wear OS Powered by Samsung” was Samsung’s product framing. Those labels do not guarantee an identical interface, app set, phone integration, or health-feature availability across manufacturers. Samsung retained its own software layer and ecosystem, so the partnership narrowed the platform divide without making every Wear OS watch a Samsung-like device.

Apps and services: what was announced, and what arrived on devices

Google’s I/O presentation outlined a rollout, not a complete app catalog available to every watch on announcement day. Features depended on the device, software, country, timing, and—in some cases—subscriptions or compatible accounts.

App or service What Google announced or demonstrated Practical qualification
Google Pay Google announced a redesign and said support would expand beyond the 11 countries then supported to 26 additional countries. Source: Google, May 18, 2021 The figure described an announced expansion, not simultaneous availability everywhere. Country, bank, card, and device support still mattered.
YouTube Music Google said a Wear OS app would arrive later in 2021, with smart downloads for subscribers so music could be available on the watch without a phone connection. Source: Google, May 18, 2021 Offline listening depended on subscription and app support; connectivity and regional availability could also affect use.
Google Maps On the Galaxy Watch4, Maps offered turn-by-turn navigation and could use information such as saved home and work addresses and recent searches from the phone. Source: Google’s Galaxy Watch4 overview That device demonstration should not be read as a guarantee that every watch or phone combination offered the same experience.
Messages by Google The Galaxy Watch4’s Messages app let users receive messages and reply from the watch. Source: Google’s Galaxy Watch4 overview App and feature availability varied by device and software.
Third-party apps Google cited apps including Strava, adidas Running, and Bitmoji as examples of developer interest. Source: Google, May 18, 2021 They were examples in an ecosystem rollout, not a promise that every app was ready on launch day.

Why developers were part of the announcement

More apps were central to the platform plan: a watch operating system is less useful if developers cannot build for it efficiently or users cannot discover what exists. Google’s developer changes aimed to improve both sides of that problem.

  • Watch-face creation: Samsung introduced a design editor intended to make creating watch faces more accessible.
  • Play Store discovery: Google said users would be able to find watch apps more easily, browse Wear recommendations, and install watch apps from a phone.
  • Health and development tools: Google highlighted APIs for heart-rate sensors and ongoing activities, along with Tiles and Wear OS emulators.

These tools addressed a persistent ecosystem challenge: developers needed a simpler path to build useful watch experiences, and a better chance that users would find them. The details were part of Android Developers’ Google I/O coverage.

What Fitbit’s role did—and did not—mean

Google completed its Fitbit acquisition in January 2021, before the Wear OS announcement. Google’s acquisition announcement provides that timing. At I/O, Google said Fitbit’s health and fitness expertise would help shape its wearable experience, including tracking health progress through the day and celebrating goals on the wrist.

That was not an announcement that Fitbit watches would migrate to Wear OS, that Google Fit would immediately be replaced, or that every Fitbit feature or subscription would appear on every Wear OS device. Google did not set out a full Fitbit hardware, app, or subscription roadmap in the May announcement. Later products may include Fitbit-branded or Fitbit-derived features, but those should not be retroactively treated as promises made at I/O.

What the performance claims meant

Google’s platform-level message was that the new system would launch apps faster and improve battery life. Actual performance and endurance depend on a watch’s processor, screen, sensors, wireless connections, software, and manufacturer tuning; the I/O announcement supplied no universal battery-life target.

For the Galaxy Watch4 specifically, Google later cited up to 40 hours of battery life and app launches up to 30% faster than previous Wear OS watches. Google also said setup was 2.5 times shorter than before. These are Google’s claims about that product and comparison, not independent test results or guarantees for all Wear OS 3 watches. Which watches could get Wear OS 3?

There was no blanket upgrade promise. The Galaxy Watch4 was the first major Wear OS 3 hardware, while updates to existing Wear OS watches depended on the manufacturer and model. Existing Samsung Tizen watches did not automatically become Wear OS watches. Google’s support guidance tells owners to check eligibility with their watch manufacturer, and notes that apps and features can change on Wear 3. Google’s Wear OS compatibility and upgrade guidance is the relevant starting point for an owner checking a particular device.

Phone and regional compatibility matter too. Google says Wear 3 watches paired with iOS do not support Google Wallet or Google Maps. Google Assistant availability also varies by watch; the support page names Galaxy Watch4 and Watch5 as examples of supported devices. Health and payment features may have additional device, country, platform, or regulatory limits. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch4 announcement cautions that compatibility and features can vary.

What to check before upgrading an older watch

Google warns that upgrading a supported watch resets it to factory settings, erases watch data and apps, unpairs it from the phone, requires setup with a companion app, and cannot be rolled back to the previous Wear OS version. Before starting, check the manufacturer’s model-specific eligibility and review Google’s upgrade guidance.

  1. Confirm the exact model is supported. Do not infer eligibility from the brand or from another model in the same product family.
  2. Protect what you can. Check that health data and settings you want to keep have synchronized or are otherwise backed up; expect installed apps and settings to be cleared by a reset.
  3. Check phone and feature requirements. Verify the required companion app and phone compatibility, then confirm local availability for services such as Wallet, Maps, LTE, and health features.
  4. Plan for setup again. Charge the watch and phone, allow time to pair the watch and reinstall apps, and proceed only if you accept that returning to the previous Wear OS version is not an option.

What the announcement meant for watch buyers

Wear OS 3 was a platform partnership, not a single universal watch experience. The choice of device still shaped the interface, health tools, phone integration, and available services.

  • Samsung phone owners: A Galaxy Watch may fit better if Samsung Health, Samsung-specific features, or One UI Watch matter. Check which functions require a Samsung phone and which are available in your country.
  • Google-first Android users: Google’s own watch hardware and services may be a more natural fit if a Google interface and Fitbit-related health features are priorities. Compare the exact watch’s features and any subscription requirements rather than assuming every Fitbit feature is included.
  • iPhone owners: Wear OS 3 has documented feature restrictions when paired with iOS, including the absence of Google Wallet and Google Maps support; compare an iPhone-compatible platform before buying.
  • Fitness- and endurance-focused buyers: If long battery life, specialized training analysis, or sport-specific navigation outranks broad app integration, a dedicated fitness watch may be a better match.
  • Existing Wear OS owners: Weigh the value of an update against model eligibility, reset and re-setup costs, aging battery condition, and the possibility of losing a preferred app or feature.

Why the 2021 announcement mattered

Google’s move was as much an ecosystem rebuild as a software release. Samsung supplied a major hardware and software partner, Google promised stronger services and developer tools, and Fitbit contributed health expertise. The Galaxy Watch4 showed the approach in practice, but also demonstrated why “unified” did not mean identical: Samsung’s interface and services remained part of the experience. For owners, the lasting lesson is to check the exact watch, phone, region, and feature—not to assume a platform announcement guarantees an upgrade or identical capabilities.
