Grand Seiko 62GS Rikka SBGH351 and Shūbun SBGH353: What’s Different

The SBGH351 Rikka and SBGH353 Shūbun share a modern 62GS case and Caliber 9S85. Their defining difference is the green early-summer dial versus the deep-blue autumn-equinox theme.

Grand Seiko’s SBGH351 Rikka and SBGH353 Shūbun are sibling Heritage Collection watches built on the same modern 62GS design and powered by the same automatic 9S85 movement. The distinction is their seasonal dials: Rikka is deep green and evokes early summer; Shūbun is deep blue and draws on clear skies near the autumn equinox.

What’s the difference between the SBGH351 and SBGH353?

The main difference is the dial and the season it represents. Their case dimensions, movement and core specifications are shared.

Reference Dial and seasonal theme Regional price listed
SBGH351 Rikka Deep green; inspired by Rikka, the seventh of Japan’s twenty-four sekki, associated with early summer greenery and wind. GBP 6,350 on Grand Seiko UK’s product page accessed in 2026; subject to change. Grand Seiko UK
SBGH353 Shūbun Deep blue with gold-toned logo and seconds hand; inspired by clear night skies around Shūbun, the sixteenth sekki, near the autumn equinox. USD 7,500 on Grand Seiko US’s product page accessed in 2026; subject to change. Grand Seiko US

Those regional listings are for different references in different markets, so they are not a like-for-like price comparison. Check the local Grand Seiko site or an authorized retailer for current price and availability.

How do the 62GS design and case compare?

Both are contemporary interpretations of the 1967 62GS, which Grand Seiko describes as its first automatic mechanical model. The bezel-free design opens up the dial visually, while Zaratsu polishing shapes the case surfaces. Grand Seiko presents these watches as modern interpretations; its product information does not provide a complete change-by-change comparison with every earlier 62GS reference.

  • Box-shaped Hardlex crystal
  • Second hand halt mechanism (Hacking)

Each watch measures 40.0 mm across, 47.0 mm from lug to lug and 12.9 mm thick. The specifications also include a box-shaped sapphire crystal, screw-down crown, 10 bar water resistance and 37 jewels. The SBGH351 UK page lists a 21 mm band width.

What movement and accuracy do they have?

Both use Grand Seiko’s Caliber 9S85, an automatic mechanical movement that can also be wound manually. Its stated power reserve is approximately 55 hours.

Grand Seiko gives two different accuracy specifications: a mean daily rate of +5 to -3 seconds per day in a controlled test before casing, and a normal-use accuracy specification of +8 to -1 seconds per day. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results; the figures describe different conditions and should not be treated as interchangeable.

What are the case and bracelet made from?

Grand Seiko specifies Ever-Brilliant Steel for both the case and bracelet, and sapphire for the exhibition caseback. The SBGH353 product page says the alloy has a PREN above 40. That corrosion-resistance description and material claim come from the manufacturer.

When did the watches launch, and what did they cost in Japan?

In an announcement dated January 31, 2025, Grand Seiko Boutique Japan listed both references at ¥990,000 including tax, with release planned for February 7, 2025; reservations opened on January 31. These are historical Japanese launch details, not a statement of current pricing elsewhere. Grand Seiko Boutique Japan announcement

Grand Seiko Boutique Japan showed the SBGH353 as unavailable online when its product page was accessed, with an arrival-notification option. That was a snapshot of one Japanese boutique and does not establish stock status in other regions. Grand Seiko Boutique Japan SBGH353
