It is a dress-leaning travel watch rather than a sports GMT: Grand Seiko rates it only “Splash Resistant,” and its 13.7 mm thickness may matter under a shirt cuff. On 2026-10-08, Grand Seiko listed it at CAD 6,700 in Canada and £4,550 in the UK; those are dated local listings, not a universal price.
What is the SBGM221?
The SBGM221 belongs to Grand Seiko’s Elegance Collection. Its traditional styling takes cues from the form of the first Grand Seiko, while the blue GMT hand adds a practical second-time-zone display. The 24-hour hand reads against the inner 24-hour scale; the main hands show local time, and the watch also has a date.
Grand Seiko credits designer Nobuhiro Kosugi and says the automatic GMT was first offered in 2010. The brand’s Indonesian product page attributes this description to Kosugi: “Its originality comes from the crescent moon shaped profile on the Zaratsu polished, curved lugs.” Grand Seiko Indonesia’s SBGM221 page presents that design account.
How the dial, case and strap come together
The dial is described by Grand Seiko as ivory, with a porcelain-like texture. A tempered blue GMT hand points to Arabic numerals on the 24-hour scale, visually separating the second time zone from the main time display. The brand says the hand’s length is intended to aid legibility and that polished hands and indexes catch light in semi-darkness; these are manufacturer descriptions, not independent visibility measurements. #1 Best Overall
- Calendar-linked time difference adjustment function
- Movement Caliber 9S86,
- Dual-curved sapphire crystal
The stainless-steel case has Zaratsu-polished curved lugs, a see-through back and a box-shaped sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on its inner surface. It comes on a crocodile-leather strap with a three-fold folding clasp and push-button release. That combination makes the watch feel formal in character. Monochrome’s reviewer found the original strap and buckle well executed but noted that a smoother casual strap changes the impression; that is a reviewer’s preference, not a universal fit recommendation. The listed band width is 19 mm, and the UK boutique lists 19 mm Grand Seiko crocodile straps. Check model-specific fit before assuming an alternate strap will work with the original clasp or end geometry.
Fit and proportions
Grand Seiko lists a 39.5 mm case diameter, 46.9 mm lug-to-lug, 13.7 mm thickness, 19 mm band width and 88 g weight. The diameter is moderate, but the thickness is substantial for a dress-styled watch. Monochrome’s reviewer considered the sizing practically very good while wishing the case were thinner and the date background matched the dial; both are personal critiques. Try it on if a close-fitting cuff or a slim profile is a priority. The UK boutique independently lists the same core diameter, lug-to-lug and thickness figures: Grand Seiko Boutique UK.

Movement, GMT operation and accuracy
The self-winding Caliber 9S66 can also be wound manually. It has 35 jewels and approximately 72 hours of power reserve when fully wound. The GMT hand provides a 24-hour second-time-zone indication, and Grand Seiko specifies a calendar-linked time-difference adjustment function. These specifications are listed on Grand Seiko Canada’s SBGM221 page.
Grand Seiko publishes two accuracy figures that describe different conditions. Its mean daily rate of +5 to −3 seconds per day is measured before casing, in six positions under controlled conditions over 12 days. Its separate normal-use accuracy specification is +10 to −1 seconds per day. Neither figure guarantees the measured performance of an individual watch in its owner’s daily routine.

Water resistance and everyday limits
Grand Seiko labels the SBGM221 “Splash Resistant.” It does not give a depth rating on the cited product specification, so do not treat it as a swimming or diving watch. The manufacturer lists magnetic resistance at 4,800 A/m. For the exact specification wording, consult the official Canadian listing.

When comparing offers, compare the same reference and condition, then account for regional taxes, warranty, seller authorization and service support. No market-wide transaction average or substantiated value-retention figure is established in the sources cited here, so a price listing alone cannot show whether an offer is a bargain or predict resale value.

The SBGM221 is best suited to someone who wants a traditional-looking mechanical watch with a useful second-time-zone hand, date and long reserve, and who likes an ivory-and-blue dial with a leather strap. It is less suitable for someone seeking a swim-ready watch, a thin cuff-friendly case or a bracelet-first sports design. When comparing other GMTs, weigh the setting and display style, case dimensions, reserve and accuracy conditions, water resistance, strap or bracelet configuration, and regional price and service arrangements rather than assuming one model is categorically superior.
