The Grand Seiko Evolution 9 SLGW007 is a manual-winding, 10-beat mechanical watch with a navy, textured dial, a 38.6 mm steel case and an approximately 80-hour power reserve. Grand Seiko’s US page lists it at USD 10,000. This is a specification-based review, not a firsthand owner report: no personal wear, winding, timing or durability observations are claimed here.
What is the SLGW007?
Grand Seiko places the SLGW007 in its Evolution 9 Collection and describes it as a manual-winding “Hi-Beat 36000, 80 Hours” mechanical watch. Its central appeal is the combination of a fast-beating hand-wound movement and a compact steel case, paired with a dial whose texture and color have a specific landscape inspiration.
The maker says the navy dial evokes white birch bark illuminated by moonlight, drawing on the Hiraniwa Plateau in Iwate Prefecture. That is Grand Seiko’s design account; the description should not be mistaken for a personal observation of the dial in changing light.
Case, dimensions and wearing considerations
The case is stainless steel and measures 38.6 mm across, 45.0 mm lug-to-lug and 9.95 mm thick. Grand Seiko lists the watch at 74 g. It has a see-through case back and a box-shaped sapphire crystal with an inner anti-reflective coating. These figures suggest a relatively modest diameter, but diameter alone does not determine fit: lug-to-lug span, wrist shape and strap length matter too. No wrist-fit test is available for this review.

The supplied cow-leather strap is 20 mm wide and closes with a folding clasp with push-button release. Grand Seiko’s US listing gives a maximum wrist perimeter of 195 mm. If considering a replacement strap, check its length and attachment as well as whether it works with the supplied clasp; the 20 mm width alone does not establish clasp compatibility.
Caliber 9SA4: winding, beat rate and reserve
The SLGW007 uses Grand Seiko Caliber 9SA4, a manually wound movement operating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, or 10 beats per second. The maker specifies an approximately 80-hour power reserve and includes a power-reserve indicator. “Approximately” matters: 80 hours is the stated reserve, not a guarantee of identical runtime in every condition.

- Three-fold clasp with push button release
- Dual-curved sapphire crystal
- Power reserve display on the back

Manual winding means the owner must wind the watch rather than relying on wrist motion to replenish its reserve. The 80-hour figure provides more than three days of stated running time when fully wound, but the watch will stop if it is not wound again after its reserve is exhausted. Grand Seiko’s official US product page describes the movement’s high vibration rate and reserve at the SLGW007 product listing; the technical specifications are also documented in the Caliber 9SA4 specification PDF.
Accuracy: two figures with different conditions
Grand Seiko publishes two accuracy ranges that should not be conflated. For the movement-only controlled measurement, it lists a mean daily rate of +5 to -3 seconds per day. For normal use, its US product page gives +8 to -1 seconds per day. These are not interchangeable guarantees: the Japanese product information explains that static measurement and worn performance involve different conditions, and that actual results can vary with factors including wearing time, temperature, arm movement, shocks and vibration.

- Box-shaped Hardlex crystal
- Second hand halt mechanism (Hacking)
Those are manufacturer specifications, not a measured result from an individual SLGW007. A useful owner timing report would need to state the observation period and method; no such result is asserted here.
Water resistance and magnetic resistance
Grand Seiko describes the watch as splash resistant on its US page and as suitable for everyday-life water exposure in the Japanese listing. Neither description establishes suitability for swimming or diving, so the SLGW007 should not be presented as a swim watch on the available specifications. The US listing gives magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m.

Price and regional context
Published prices are market-specific rather than direct currency equivalents. Grand Seiko’s US product page displayed USD 10,000 when accessed on October 8, 2026; its Australian page displayed AUD 14,500 on that date. The Japanese boutique announcement gave a launch price of JPY 1,342,000 including tax in 2025, with reservations opening September 11 and release scheduled for October 10, 2025. That Japanese figure is historical launch information, not confirmation of current stock or price.

The SLGW007 is most relevant to a buyer who specifically wants a hand-wound mechanical watch, appreciates the maker’s white-birch-inspired dial story and prefers the listed case dimensions. The trade-offs to weigh are equally concrete: it requires winding, its water description is limited, and a 45 mm lug-to-lug measurement may fit differently from what the 38.6 mm diameter suggests.
For a first Grand Seiko or a comparison against another model, judge the alternatives on case dimensions, winding system, beat rate and reserve, dial design and legibility, strap and clasp fit, water-use expectations, and regional price and warranty. The SLGW007 specifications establish one side of that comparison; without verified details for a named alternative, there is no sound basis to call it the better watch.
