Grand Seiko’s Kodo “Daybreak” is reference SLGT005, a 2024 edition of 20 that pairs a platinum-and-titanium case with the brand’s caliber 9ST1 constant-force tourbillon. Grand Seiko announced an approximate U.S. recommended retail price of $395,000 at launch; that 2024 figure does not confirm today’s price or availability.
What is the Grand Seiko Kodo “Daybreak”?
“Daybreak” is the editorial name for the Grand Seiko Kodo Constant-Force Tourbillon reference SLGT005, introduced in 2024. It is the brighter counterpart to the original Kodo, SLGT003, launched in 2022. Grand Seiko frames the pair as a design story of light and shadow: the original suggests evening twilight, while SLGT005 represents daybreak. Grand Seiko’s 2024 announcement describes the new reference and its design.
The Kodo was Grand Seiko’s first mechanical complication watch. The original SLGT003 received the Chronometry Prize at the 2022 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, according to Grand Seiko’s SLGT003 page. That award belongs to the original reference; it should not be mistaken for a separate award to SLGT005.
How does caliber 9ST1 work?
Both Kodo references use caliber 9ST1, a manually wound movement that places a tourbillon and a constant-force mechanism together on a single axis. Grand Seiko says the arrangement has no wheels or other components between the two mechanisms, allowing the constant-force mechanism to transmit torque to the balance without an intervening transmission. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions, not independent performance findings.

Grand Seiko says the outer constant-force carriage advances once per second around the inner rotating tourbillon carriage. In SLGT005, silver-toned components and pale blue sapphire jewels distinguish the mechanism’s brighter presentation.
Power reserve and testing
Grand Seiko states a 72-hour power reserve for the movement and says the constant-force portion operates for approximately 50 hours. The two figures describe different aspects of the system: the first is the stated movement reserve, while the second is the manufacturer’s stated operating duration for the constant-force mechanism. The brand also says each movement is tested for 48 hours in six positions and at three temperatures, and assessed over 34 days. These figures are from Grand Seiko’s 2024 release, not an independent test report.

Case, dial and included straps
The case combines an inner shell of 950 platinum with an outer case of Brilliant Hard Titanium. Grand Seiko describes hand-finished surfaces that include Zaratsu polishing and hairline finishing. The published dimensions are 43.8 mm in diameter and 12.9 mm thick; the stated ratings are 10 bar water resistance and 4,800 A/m magnetic resistance.
The open-worked dial and transparent caseback leave the layered movement visible. Grand Seiko says the design uses empty space and light entering from both sides, with the pale blue movement jewels adding a dawn-like accent. Those are the maker’s stated design intentions.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who is the Daybreak for?
SLGT005 is most compelling to a collector drawn to visible mechanical architecture and the unusual combination of a tourbillon with a constant-force mechanism. Its limited 20-piece production and platinum/titanium construction place it firmly in the high-complication, high-luxury category. The practical decision points are whether the larger 43.8 mm case suits the wearer, whether the open movement and bright palette appeal more than SLGT003’s twilight treatment, and whether a specific piece can actually be sourced at an acceptable current price.
