Grand Seiko SBGJ237 vs. a Rolex Pepsi: Which GMT Is Better?

The SBGJ237 is a larger, blue-and-white sapphire-bezel GMT with a high-beat movement. See how it compares with the documented 40 mm white-gold Rolex Pepsi configuration.

The Grand Seiko SBGJ237 is a credible alternative to a red-and-blue Rolex GMT-Master II, but “better” depends on what matters most: the Grand Seiko is larger, uses a blue-and-white sapphire bezel, and offers a high-beat movement with a 20-bar rating. The Rolex brochure available for comparison describes a different configuration—a 40 mm white-gold GMT-Master II with a meteorite dial—so it is not a like-for-like comparison with a steel Pepsi.

How does the SBGJ237 compare with a Rolex Pepsi?

Grand Seiko’s SBGJ237 is a stainless-steel Sport Collection GMT with a midnight-blue dial and blue-and-white sapphire 24-hour bezel. The relevant Rolex source is the official brochure for reference 126719BLRO: a red-and-blue Cerachrom-bezel GMT-Master II in white gold with a meteorite dial. It is useful for comparing two Pepsi-color GMT configurations, but its specifications and price should not be passed off as those of a steel Rolex.

Specification Grand Seiko SBGJ237 Rolex GMT-Master II 126719BLRO
Case material and diameter Stainless steel; 44.2 mm White gold; 40 mm
Bezel Blue-and-white sapphire, rotating 24-hour bezel Red-and-blue Cerachrom, bidirectional 24-hour bezel
GMT operation Independently adjusted GMT hand; calendar-linked time-difference adjustment Independently adjustable local hour hand, which moves in hour jumps while the minute and seconds hands continue
Movement Automatic with manual winding, Caliber 9S86 Caliber 3285
Power reserve Approximately 55 hours Approximately 70 hours
Water resistance 20 bar 100 m
Accuracy specification Mean daily rate +5 to −3 seconds under Grand Seiko’s stated controlled pre-casing measurement conditions; normal-use accuracy +8 to −1 seconds per day −2/+2 seconds per day after casing; Superlative Chronometer certified

Specifications are manufacturer statements, not results from a shared independent test. The two accuracy figures for the Grand Seiko describe different conditions; its controlled mean-rate figure is not a guaranteed rate for a watch being worn. Is the SBGJ237 too big?

It may be, depending on your wrist and how you prefer a watch to sit. Grand Seiko lists the SBGJ237 at 44.2 mm in diameter, 50.6 mm lug-to-lug, and 14.4 mm thick. The bracelet is 21 mm wide, and the listed weight is 188 g. The cited Rolex reference is 40 mm across, but the available figures do not establish how either watch will feel on a particular wrist. Try each exact reference on if fit is a deciding factor.

How does the 9S86 GMT work?

The SBGJ237’s white GMT hand and rotating 24-hour bezel let the wearer track additional time zones. Grand Seiko describes simultaneous display of three time zones. Its GMT hand can be adjusted independently, while the time-difference adjustment is linked to the calendar. That arrangement is useful when you want to keep a reference time visible while making a local time change, but the exact setting sequence should be checked in the watch’s instructions.

The Rolex 126719BLRO takes a different approach: its local hour hand moves independently in hour jumps, while the minute and seconds hands continue. That makes changing local time without stopping the watch straightforward. Neither setting method is universally better; consider whether you most often change local time or adjust the indicated GMT time.

What is the difference between a sapphire and ceramic GMT bezel?

The SBGJ237 uses a blue-and-white sapphire bezel; the cited Rolex uses a red-and-blue Cerachrom bezel. These are different materials and color treatments, not interchangeable labels for the same construction. The Grand Seiko’s palette is cooler and more restrained, while the Rolex configuration uses the familiar red-and-blue contrast. Which look you prefer is subjective, and the specifications alone do not establish which will suit you better.

What does the SBGJ237 cost, and is it better value?

Grand Seiko’s US product page displayed a price of USD 7,600 when accessed in 2026. That is a volatile listed price, not evidence of current transaction prices. The Rolex brochure cited here is for a white-gold, meteorite-dial reference; it does not establish the price of a comparable steel Pepsi. A defensible price comparison requires the exact Rolex reference, market, and date. No verified evidence here establishes resale values, waitlists, availability, or service costs.

Who should choose each watch?

  • Choose the SBGJ237 if you want a larger stainless-steel GMT, the blue-and-white sapphire bezel, Grand Seiko’s high-beat Caliber 9S86, or a 20-bar water-resistance rating.
  • Consider the cited Rolex configuration if you prefer a 40 mm white-gold case, red-and-blue Cerachrom bezel, the independently jumping local-hour hand, or the specific meteorite-dial design.
  • For a steel Pepsi comparison, confirm the exact Rolex reference and use its own official specifications and current regional pricing rather than borrowing figures from the 126719BLRO brochure.
