Its dark red dial draws on Grand Seiko’s stated inspiration of a summer sunrise over Japan’s Hotaka mountain range; inside is the automatic Spring Drive 9R66 with a 72-hour power reserve.
What is the Grand Seiko SBGE305?
The SBGE305 is a stainless-steel Sport Collection watch that combines Spring Drive timekeeping with a GMT function. Grand Seiko announced it on February 5, 2024, as one of two creations marking the 20th anniversary of Caliber 9R. The brand announced an edition of 1,300 pieces, with availability through Grand Seiko boutiques and select retail partners worldwide beginning in June 2024. Those are the release details, not confirmation of current stock.

Grand Seiko describes the dial’s dark red color as inspired by a vivid summer sunrise illuminating the steep Hotaka mountain range in the Shinshu region. This is the brand’s design inspiration, rather than a claim that the dial reproduces a particular sunrise. The SBGE305 is also distinct from the Hotaka-inspired SBGC275 announced in April 2024: the SBGC275 is a chronograph with a different movement and case material.

What movement is in the SBGE305, and how does its GMT work?
The SBGE305 uses Grand Seiko’s automatic Spring Drive Caliber 9R66. The manufacturer states an accuracy of ±1 second per day, or ±15 seconds per month, and a 72-hour power reserve. The movement has a GMT hand and an independently adjustable local hour hand.
For a time-zone change, the local hour hand can be set forward or backward while the watch continues running. That lets the wearer adjust local time without stopping the watch, while the GMT hand can continue to indicate another time zone. This describes the function Grand Seiko specifies; it does not establish a particular travel or accuracy test.

How much did the SBGE305 cost, and how many were made?
Grand Seiko announced a limited run of 1,300 watches. Its February 2024 US release listed an approximate recommended retail price of $6,200. That is the launch-era US price, not a current quote or estimate of resale value. The release said the watch would become available at Grand Seiko boutiques and select retail partners worldwide beginning in June 2024, but it does not establish present availability or pricing. Grand Seiko noted that price information was subject to change at the time of publication.

The Hotaka name and red-toned dial can cause confusion between two separate Grand Seiko releases. The SBGE305 is the 2024 anniversary Sport Collection GMT covered here, with Caliber 9R66, a stainless-steel case, and a 1,300-piece edition. The SBGC275, announced April 9, 2024, is a different Spring Drive Chronograph GMT. Its Caliber 9R96, titanium case, chronograph function, and 700-piece edition belong to that reference, not the SBGE305. Grand Seiko’s SBGC275 announcement identifies the separate model.
