The Grand Seiko SBGV009 is a limited-edition quartz reissue of the 1964 GS Self-Dater, not a mechanical remake. It keeps the earlier watch’s silver dial and key design cues, but updates the package with Grand Seiko’s 9F82 quartz caliber and a stated 10-bar water-resistance rating. Its 37.2 mm case is compact by the published dimensions; whether it suits your wrist, and how well an individual example has aged, depends on the watch in front of you.
What the SBGV009 is
Seiko announced the SBGV009 on March 27, 2014, as part of a five-model Historical Collection. The silver-dial watch reinterprets the 1964 GS Self-Dater; its black-dial companion is the SBGV011. Seiko described the SBGV009 as following the original’s dial color and carrying over details such as its substantial lugs, hand and index shapes, logo type and display layout. The 1964 original was hand-wound and mechanical; the reissue uses a quartz movement.
The edition was limited to 1,200 SBGV009 watches worldwide, with release announced for June 7, 2014. These are historical launch details, not an indication of current availability.
Specifications at a glance

| Movement | Grand Seiko 9F82 quartz, with date display and nine jewels, according to Seiko’s 2014 announcement. |
| Accuracy | Manufacturer-stated ±10 seconds per year for a watch worn on the wrist at 5°C–35°C; this is a specification, not a guarantee of an individual watch’s current accuracy. |

| Case | Stainless steel; 37.2 mm diameter and 10.5 mm thick. |
| Crystal | Box-shaped sapphire with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface. |
| Water resistance | 10 bar / 10 atm as stated by Seiko. |

How the quartz movement changes the proposition
The SBGV009 preserves the Self-Dater’s appearance while changing its underlying technology. Instead of the original’s hand-wound mechanical caliber, the reissue uses the 9F82, a high-precision quartz movement with a date display. Seiko’s 2014 English press specification also identifies an instantaneous calendar change, a high-torque stepping motor and a super-sealed movement. The maker’s annual accuracy figure is ±10 seconds under the stated 5°C–35°C wrist-wear conditions, rather than a claim that every example will maintain that rate indefinitely.

- Featuring a Black Band, Silver-tone Case, Scratch Resistant Hardlex Crystal
- Box-shaped Hardlex crystal
- Second hand halt mechanism (Hacking)
That distinction is central to the watch: it is a design revival with a modern quartz specification, rather than an attempt to reproduce the original’s mechanical operation. The stated battery life is approximately three years, but an older or pre-owned watch may need a battery sooner.
Case, dial and wear-related details
The published dimensions—37.2 mm across and 10.5 mm thick—make the case relatively compact on paper. The box-shaped sapphire crystal and stainless-steel case are part of the specified construction. Seiko’s announcement says the dial reprises the 1964 model’s color for the SBGV009, alongside the historical hands, indices, logo treatment and layout.
Dimensions and design descriptions cannot establish how a particular example wears, how its finishing looks in person, or whether the case and crystal remain in good condition. Those questions require examining the individual watch.

SBGV009 compared with the related watches
Against the 1964 GS Self-Dater
The reissue’s clearest contrast is mechanical: the 1964 watch was hand-wound, while the SBGV009 is quartz. The newer model retains selected visual cues and adds a stated 10-bar water-resistance specification. That is a comparison of design and published specifications, not evidence that every vintage original or aged reissue will perform to those ratings today.

Against the SBGV011
The announced companion SBGV011 has a black dial; the SBGV009 has a silver dial. The cited announcement identifies the SBGV009’s edition limit, but does not establish a separate SBGV011 production figure here.
Against the contemporary-design models in the 2014 collection
The Historical Collection announcement also included models with contemporary styling and Spring Drive movements. The SBGV009 instead pairs heritage styling with quartz. These are different design and movement choices, not interchangeable equivalents in value or function.

What to check before buying a pre-owned SBGV009
The 2014 Japanese suggested retail price of ¥350,000 plus tax is historical context only; it does not establish a current market value. Current prices, availability, service costs and parts availability are not established by the cited model information. Assess the specific watch and seller rather than treating its original list price or limited-edition status as a current valuation.
- Confirm the reference and serial details against the watch and its documentation.
- Inspect the case, crystal, dial, hands and bracelet for condition and signs of alteration.
- If the seller represents the watch as a complete factory set, check for both the crocodile strap and stainless-steel bracelet specified in the original package.
- Ask for service documentation and whether the battery has been replaced.
- Ask whether water resistance has been tested recently. Seiko’s original 10-bar specification does not certify the condition of an aged, unserviced example.
The available specification does not establish aftermarket strap fitment or replacement-bracelet compatibility, so confirm the correct fit for the particular watch before buying accessories.
Verdict
The SBGV009 is a focused heritage reissue for someone drawn to the 1964 Self-Dater’s design but seeking a quartz watch rather than a hand-wound mechanical one. Its documented strengths are a distinctive historical link, a silver dial, compact stated dimensions and the 9F82’s manufacturer-rated accuracy. Its edition size and launch price belong to its 2014 history; the condition, completeness, current value and availability of any example must be evaluated separately.
