What is the Grand Seiko SLGH017?
The SLGH017 is part of Grand Seiko’s Evolution 9 collection and uses the Hi-Beat 36000 automatic caliber 9SA5. Its “Night Birch” name refers to a black interpretation of the birch-textured dial design, evoking white birch forests on the Hiraniwa Plateau near Grand Seiko’s Shizukuishi watchmaking studio. The design places a darker, more subdued dial within the same birch family as the White Birch SLGH005.
How the Night Birch looks and is built
Dial and Evolution 9 design
The dial texture is the visual focus: its black treatment suggests the birch forest at night rather than reproducing the brighter look of white birch bark. Grand Seiko describes the Evolution 9 design as pairing prominent hands and markers with alternating Zaratsu-polished and brushed surfaces. That contrast gives the case and bracelet a mix of reflective and muted finishing; it is a description of the design and finish, not a hands-on assessment of this example.
Titanium case and official dimensions
The case and bracelet are made from high-intensity titanium. Grand Seiko’s US specification lists the following dimensions and construction details:

The listed 114 g weight is the official US specification. A 2022 hands-on article by Brice Goulard for Monochrome Watches suggested an expected weight of about 135 g, while explicitly saying the watch had not been weighed during that short session. That estimate is not a measurement and should not replace Grand Seiko’s published figure.
Caliber 9SA5: reserve and accuracy
The 9SA5 is self-winding and also supports manual winding. Grand Seiko attributes its approximately 80-hour power reserve to the movement’s Dual Impulse Escapement and twin barrels.

Grand Seiko publishes two accuracy figures that describe different things. The mean daily rate is +5 to -3 seconds per day for a movement measured before casing in six positions under controlled conditions over 12 days. The stated accuracy for normal use is +8 to -1 seconds per day. The controlled mean daily rate is not a guarantee that every wearer’s watch will gain or lose within that range each day.

Brice Goulard’s Monochrome Watches article dated June 7, 2022 reported a launch-era price of EUR 10,500. That is historical launch context, not an established current European retail price. Check the relevant official regional listing for its current price and availability.

Goulard’s dated article discusses the proportions, finishing, titanium construction, dial and 9SA5 movement after a short session with the watch. It offers useful launch-era context, but its weight figure is explicitly an estimate rather than a measured result. The published specifications above are the firmer basis for dimensions, weight, water resistance and movement performance; neither the article nor those specifications establish how the watch will feel on every wrist.

For a comparison with the White Birch SLGH005 or another watch, the useful points are market- and date-specific price, material, diameter and lug-to-lug, weight, movement and reserve, stated accuracy, water resistance, and dial preference. The available information does not establish a comprehensive current-market value comparison between the Birch models.
