It pairs the specially adjusted Spring Drive Chronograph GMT caliber 9R96, rated by Grand Seiko at ±0.5 seconds per day, with a substantial 46.4 mm ceramic-and-titanium case. The specification is compelling, but its size and distinctive color scheme are central to deciding whether this is the right version for you.
What is the Grand Seiko SBGC219?
Seiko Watch Corporation announced the Black Ceramic Collection on March 23, 2017. It comprised three references: the limited SBGC219, plus the SBGC221 and SBGC223. SBGC219 marked ten years of the Spring Drive Chronograph GMT caliber and was limited to 500 pieces worldwide, according to the manufacturer’s announcement.
Its defining look is a Grand Seiko blue dial with rose-gold-tone hands and markers. The rose-gold details extend beyond the dial: the visible movement rotor carries an 18k rose-gold Grand Seiko lion emblem, and the buckle bears an 18k rose-gold Grand Seiko logo. That combination makes SBGC219 visually distinct from its two collection companions.
How does SBGC219 compare with SBGC221 and SBGC223?
The three references share the Black Ceramic Collection concept, but not the same movement or edition status. The manufacturer’s 2017 specifications distinguish the limited SBGC219 from the two standard-production companions as follows:
#1 Best Overall
- Calendar-linked time difference adjustment function
- Movement Caliber 9S86,
- Dual-curved sapphire crystal
| Reference | Dial | Movement | Edition status | Bezel detail | Approximate European launch price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SBGC219 | Blue with rose-gold-tone hands and markers | 9R96 | Limited to 500 worldwide | Tachymeter bezel | €19,800 |
| SBGC221 | White | 9R86 | Not identified as a limited edition in the announcement | Not stated in the announcement | €18,700 |
| SBGC223 | Black | 9R86 | Not identified as a limited edition in the announcement | Not stated in the announcement | €18,700 |
Prices are approximate European recommended retail prices published for the 2017 launch, not current pricing or resale guidance. The special 9R96 movement and 500-piece limit belong to SBGC219; the companion references use 9R86 and should not be treated as sharing those distinctions.
What movement is in the SBGC219?
SBGC219 uses automatic Spring Drive Chronograph GMT caliber 9R96, with 50 jewels. It combines timekeeping with a GMT hand and a chronograph capable of measuring up to 12 hours. The displayed functions also include a date, power-reserve indicator, 24-hour dual-time display, and 30-minute and 12-hour chronograph counters. Grand Seiko specifies calendar-linked time-zone adjustment.

How accurate is Grand Seiko caliber 9R96?
Grand Seiko’s published rating for the 9R96 in SBGC219 is ±0.5 seconds per day, also expressed as ±10 seconds per month. This is the manufacturer’s specification, not an independent measurement of an individual watch. The same announcement describes the limited edition as having “enhanced accuracy.”
The stated power reserve is 72 hours, or about three days. That gives the watch a practical cushion if it is taken off for a weekend, though actual reserve and timekeeping performance can vary by watch and conditions.

How big is the SBGC219, and what is it made of?
The case measures 46.4 mm in diameter, excluding the crown and protrusions, and 16.2 mm thick. Those are substantial dimensions, so buyers should treat fit as a key consideration rather than assume the watch will wear discreetly. A try-on is the most reliable way to judge how its diameter, thickness, and bracelet sit on a particular wrist.
The case and bracelet combine ceramic with high-intensity titanium. The Japanese announcement identifies the ceramic as zirconia ceramic and describes a bright-titanium inner case. Grand Seiko says the ceramic is positioned to protect more exposed areas from scratches and that the titanium-ceramic construction reduces weight compared with stainless steel. These are design claims, not guarantees that the watch cannot be scratched or will feel light on every wearer.

What did the 2017 hands-on review say?
Felix Scholz’s hands-on article for Time+Tide, published March 23, 2017, praised the contrast of the blue-and-gold color scheme, the complex dial layout, and the large 46.4 mm case. Scholz wrote, “There’s something about the rich colour scheme, complex dial layout and big 46.4mm case that just works.” He also called the titanium-and-ceramic bracelet a welcome addition to the design. These are his contemporary impressions, not a new hands-on assessment.
