The Grand Seiko SBGH289 and SBGH291 share the same 43.8mm case dimensions, Hi-Beat movement and 200m diver’s rating. The choice is chiefly between the blue-dial stainless-steel SBGH289, listed at 206g, and the black-dial high-intensity-titanium SBGH291, listed at 142g. These are specification-based comparisons, not hands-on wear findings.

What separates the SBGH289 and SBGH291?

Specification SBGH289 SBGH291

Case and bracelet material Stainless steel High-intensity titanium

Band width 22mm 22mm

Grand Seiko lists both watches with these common dimensions and movement specifications; the brand’s paired overview identifies the dial colors and matte finish. The SBGH289 product page, SBGH291 product page and paired model overview are the maker’s references for the figures.

How much does the titanium version weigh less?

The listed weights differ by 64g: 206g for the steel SBGH289 and 142g for the titanium SBGH291. That is the clearest numeric distinction between the models. Their published case measurements are identical, so the SBGH291 is not a smaller watch by the stated dimensions. Weight alone does not establish which will feel better on a particular wrist; bracelet adjustment, wrist shape and individual preference matter, and the specifications do not answer those fit questions.

What do both watches share?

Caliber 9S85

Both use Grand Seiko’s automatic Caliber 9S85, which can also be wound manually. The maker specifies a 36,000-beat-per-hour rate, 37 jewels and an approximately 55-hour power reserve. Grand Seiko Boutique India says the movement is made at Studio Shizukuishi in Iwate Prefecture. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of a particular watch.

Accuracy ratings and what they mean

Grand Seiko gives the same two accuracy figures for each model: a mean daily rate of +5 to -3 seconds per day and normal-use accuracy of +8 to -1 seconds per day. The mean-rate figure is measured before casing in six positions under artificially controlled conditions over 12 days, according to the SBGH289 product page. It should not be read as a promise that an individual watch will keep that rate in everyday wear; the separate normal-use range is the brand’s listed figure for that context.

Diver’s specifications and construction details

Both are rated for 200m / 660ft diver’s water resistance and have a screw-down crown and unidirectional rotating bezel. The official specifications also list a 22mm band, sapphire crystal with inner anti-reflective coating, 4,800 A/m magnetic resistance and an extension clasp with folding lock. Grand Seiko’s Benelux SBGH291 page specifies bezel clicks at 30-second intervals and describes deep grooves intended to aid operation with dive gloves.

How do the dials and materials differ?

The SBGH289 pairs stainless steel with a matte blue dial; the SBGH291 pairs high-intensity titanium with a matte black dial. Grand Seiko’s paired overview describes both as having large hands with differentiated shapes, multi-faceted applied indices and LumiBrite on the hands, markers and bezel. Those are the manufacturer’s descriptions of the design and luminous treatment, not a report of comparative legibility testing.

The choice therefore combines two changes—case-and-bracelet material and dial color—rather than offering the same color in two metals. Consider which appearance you prefer alongside the listed weight, rather than assuming the material difference alone determines comfort or everyday versatility.

Which reference should you choose?

  • Choose the SBGH289 if you want the blue matte dial and stainless-steel construction, and the listed 206g weight suits your preference.
  • Choose the SBGH291 if you prefer the black matte dial and high-intensity titanium, and value its lower listed weight of 142g.
  • Assess the shared footprint in person if possible. Both are 43.8mm across, 51.0mm lug-to-lug and 14.7mm thick. Those measurements are useful for comparison with a watch you already own, but cannot by themselves predict fit.

For a purchase decision, confirm the exact reference, current local price, stock and authorized-retailer status in your market. The official pages display different regional currencies and prices, so those page figures are not a valid direct price comparison across markets.
