The Grand Seiko SBGC275 is a 2024 Sport Collection limited edition combining a Spring Drive chronograph and GMT with a color-shifting dial inspired by sunrise over Japan’s Hotaka range. Grand Seiko announced 700 watches, a 72-hour power reserve and accuracy of ±10 seconds per month for its specially adjusted Caliber 9R96.
What is the Grand Seiko SBGC275?
Grand Seiko announced the SBGC275 on April 9, 2024, as the Sport Collection Caliber 9R 20th Anniversary Limited Edition. It celebrates 20 years of the 9R Spring Drive series. The brand said the watch would reach Grand Seiko Boutiques and select retail partners worldwide in July 2024, with production limited to 700. Grand Seiko’s launch announcement identifies it as a Spring Drive Chronograph GMT.
What makes the dial distinctive?
Grand Seiko says the dial draws on summer sunrise light across the Hotaka mountain range in Shinshu, central Japan, shifting visually from pink toward orange. Its Optical Multilayer Coating process uses physical vapor deposition and layers of nanoscale film; the company says the resulting hue changes with the viewing angle. The dial also has a texture Grand Seiko describes as a lion’s-mane pattern. The brand connects the angular case and claw-like lugs to the same lion-inspired design language.
This is an angle-dependent color effect, rather than a single fixed color description. Grand Seiko’s launch release explains: “Several layers of nanoscale film create an effect in which the dial exhibits a different hue depending on the angle of view.”

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the specifications mean for the watch
The SBGC275 puts a chronograph, GMT and date on a 44.5 mm-wide case that is 16.8 mm thick. Those dimensions are useful to compare with a watch that fits you; they do not by themselves establish how it will wear on a particular wrist. Its 20-bar water-resistance rating, titanium construction and screw-down crown are specified by Grand Seiko, while the GMT and chronograph add timing and time-zone functions to the Spring Drive platform.
For a meaningful comparison with another chronograph GMT, consider case width and thickness alongside material, movement accuracy and power reserve, water resistance, how the GMT and chronograph operate, dial legibility, edition size, and the other watch’s price and availability. The SBGC275’s color-changing dial is a design feature described by Grand Seiko; whether its display is easy to read in a given setting is not established by the published specifications.
