What is the Grand Seiko SBGD201?
SBGD201 belongs to Grand Seiko’s Masterpiece Collection. Its defining combination is a hand-wound Spring Drive movement, an eight-day stated reserve, a platinum 950 case and a textured dial whose inspiration Grand Seiko traces to diamond dust in the Suwa highlands of Nagano Prefecture.
Spring Drive is neither a conventional quartz movement nor a purely mechanical one. A wound mainspring provides the energy, while electronic regulation governs timekeeping. The SBGD201’s calibre 9R01 was developed by Grand Seiko’s Micro Artist Studio.
How does calibre 9R01 provide an eight-day reserve?
Grand Seiko specifies approximately 192 hours of power reserve when fully wound. Calibre 9R01 uses three barrels linked in sequence to extend the period the watch can run between windings. Grand Seiko says the calibre is also designed to reduce energy loss from friction.

The manufacturer gives accuracy as ±10 seconds per month, or ±0.5 second per day. These are Grand Seiko specifications, not results from an independent test. A power-reserve indicator lets the wearer see the remaining reserve.
Grand Seiko distinguishes the 9R01 from calibre 9R02: the 9R01 uses three sequentially linked barrels and is specified for eight days, while the 9R02 uses a Torque Return System and is specified for 84 hours. These are manufacturer-published specifications. The 10-bar rating is not an independent water-resistance test, and the 22 mm band width alone does not establish compatibility with every replacement strap or clasp. See Grand Seiko’s SBGD201 specifications for the model listing.
What inspired the dial?
Grand Seiko says the dial evokes diamond dust seen on cold mornings in the Suwa region. The brand describes a special layered finish that creates a sparkling texture without white paint, with the treatment intended to preserve legibility. The case is platinum 950. Grand Seiko describes its polishing as emphasizing the case’s edges. The watch’s 43.0 mm diameter, 51.8 mm lug-to-lug measurement and 13.2 mm thickness are useful fit references; wrist fit will also depend on wrist shape and personal preference.
