Its official specifications list a 43.0 mm diameter, 51.8 mm lug-to-lug length, 13.2 mm thickness and average accuracy of ±10 seconds per month. It is a specific, high-value reference—not simply a generic description of an eight-day Spring Drive.
What is the Grand Seiko SBGD202?
The SBGD202 belongs to Grand Seiko’s Masterpiece Collection and is associated with the brand’s Micro Artist Studio. It combines an 18k rose-gold case with a black dial, crocodile-leather strap and transparent screw case back. Grand Seiko describes the Micro Artist Studio as responsible for its highest-end Spring Drive models. Grand Seiko’s regional SBGD202 page gives the product specifications and design description.

The black dial has a layered, starry appearance inspired by the night sky around the studio in Shinshu. In its 2017 launch announcement, Seiko Watch Corporation described the dial’s special process as combining plating and painting. The same announcement presents the movement bridge’s resemblance to Mt. Fuji and details recalling the Suwa area as design interpretations by the brand, not literal functional features. How long is the SBGD202 power reserve?
Grand Seiko specifies approximately 192 hours, or eight days, when fully wound. The hand-wound Calibre 9R01 uses three barrels to provide the extended reserve. Its power-reserve indicator is on the movement side, visible through the transparent case back; the brand says this placement preserves the dial’s appearance.
How accurate is the 9R01 Spring Drive?
Grand Seiko publishes average accuracy of ±10 seconds per month, also expressed as ±0.5 second per day. This is the manufacturer’s specification, not an independent measurement of an individual watch. Spring Drive uses the unwinding mainspring to drive the hands while quartz microelectronics regulate accuracy; the operating principle and winding guidance are covered in the official Calibres 9R01/9R02 instruction manual.
How big is the SBGD202?
The case is 43.0 mm across and 13.2 mm thick, with a 51.8 mm lug-to-lug measurement and 22 mm band width. Those measurements provide a more useful basis for judging proportions than diameter alone: lug-to-lug length indicates the span across the wrist, while thickness describes how far the case rises. Try the watch on if possible, since these figures do not predict individual comfort or fit.
Is the SBGD202 suitable for swimming or diving?
Grand Seiko lists the SBGD202 at 10 bar, but the rating does not make it a scuba-diving watch. The instruction manual says watches in the 10/20-bar everyday-water-resistance class are not suitable for scuba diving with an air cylinder. It also cautions that seals and glass bonding can deteriorate over time, so a rating should not be treated as a guarantee that an older or unserviced watch remains water-resistant.

The manual also advises against leaving moisture, sweat or dirt on the watch for long periods, and against wearing it in a bath, sauna or hot spring, where heat, soap and steam can affect water resistance. If the service history or seal condition is uncertain, have water resistance checked through an authorized service network before exposing the watch to water.

What does the SBGD202 cost, and is it available?
As displayed on the Grand Seiko Official Boutique U.S. product page on October 8, 2026, the SBGD202 was listed at USD $48,000 with “Please Inquire About Availability.” That is a market-specific page price and availability status, not a universal price or a statement about resale value; both can change. Check the U.S. boutique listing for its current display.
Grand Seiko’s Australian page displays AUD $68,200 and identifies Grand Seiko boutiques and salons as sales channels; check the regional page for local details. For historical context only, Seiko Watch Corporation announced an approximate European recommended retail price of €52,800 at the watch’s 2017 launch. That launch figure is not a current price.
These official retail pages do not establish a current secondary-market value, authenticated pre-owned inventory, service price or service lead time. When considering a used example, check reference and serial consistency, condition and polishing, box and papers, service history and seller reputation; an independent or authorized inspection can help assess the specific watch.

What to consider before choosing the SBGD202
The SBGD202’s appeal rests on a particular combination: precious-metal construction, a distinctive black dial, a manually wound eight-day Spring Drive movement and a display case back that reveals the movement-side reserve indicator. Its dimensions, crocodile-leather strap and 10-bar rating are also practical parts of the decision, especially for a watch intended for regular wear.
For a comparison with another watch, use the same concrete criteria on both: case material and local price, diameter and lug-to-lug length, thickness, winding method, reserve and stated accuracy, dial treatment, movement visibility, strap and clasp, water resistance, and current local availability. Grand Seiko links the SBGD201 as a related eight-day model, but a direct verdict requires current comparable specifications rather than assumptions based on the shared reserve.
