The Grand Seiko SBGE253, SBGE255, and SBGE257 are three color variations of the same 40.5 mm Spring Drive GMT watch. Their practical differences are chiefly the dial, bezel, and GMT-hand colors; their case dimensions and core specifications are shared. Fratello reviewer Balazs Ferenczi found the smaller case a welcome change from earlier 44 mm SBGE models, but the 14.7 mm thickness means diameter alone cannot tell you how one will fit your wrist.
What separates the SBGE253, SBGE255, and SBGE257?
The most immediate difference is the color treatment. Fratello’s Balazs Ferenczi described the 253 as the restrained option, the 255 as his personal favorite, and the 257 as the most striking. Those are the reviewer’s preferences, not performance differences.
| Reference | Dial, bezel, and GMT hand | What stands out |
|---|---|---|
| SBGE253 | Black dial and bezel, red GMT hand and GMT marking, as described in Fratello’s review. | The least colorful of the three; Ferenczi considered it versatile. |
| SBGE255 | Blue dial and bezel with a light-blue GMT hand, according to Fratello and the Grand Seiko Boutique listing. | A coordinated blue palette with a contrasting GMT hand; Ferenczi said this was his preferred colorway. |
| SBGE257 | Green dial and bezel with a yellow GMT hand, according to Fratello and Grand Seiko. | The yellow hand makes the strongest contrast of the three in Ferenczi’s view. Grand Seiko says the green dial takes inspiration from Japanese moss. |
Grand Seiko describes the SBGE257 as combining a GMT hand with its Spring Drive caliber, which “combines the motive force of a mainspring with the high precision of a quartz watch.” The shared movement and dimensions make color preference the main choice between these references.
How do the 40.5 mm cases wear?
All three use a stainless-steel case with a ceramic bezel. The published dimensions are 40.5 mm across, 48.7 mm lug-to-lug, and 14.7 mm thick. Fratello contrasted this generation’s 40.5 mm diameter with 44 mm earlier SBGE models, and Ferenczi called the reduced size and simpler appearance “a treat to wear.” That is one reviewer’s impression, not a guarantee of fit for every wrist.

- Calendar-linked time difference adjustment function
- Movement Caliber 9S86,
- Dual-curved sapphire crystal
The 48.7 mm lug-to-lug measurement helps describe how far the watch spans across the wrist, while the 14.7 mm thickness remains substantial. Wrist shape, strap or bracelet position, and personal comfort all matter, so try one on if fit is decisive. The case is topped by dual-curved sapphire crystal with an inner anti-reflective coating.
Shared movement and functions
Each reference uses Grand Seiko’s 9R66 Spring Drive automatic caliber, which can also be wound manually. It displays a second time zone with a GMT hand, along with the date and a power-reserve indicator. Official specifications list a calendar-linked time-difference adjustment function.

- Power reserve: approximately 72 hours, or three days.
- Stated accuracy: ±15 seconds per month, equivalent to ±1 second per day. This is the manufacturer’s specification, not a result from an independent test.
- GMT setting: Grand Seiko Boutique says the local hour hand jumps independently when crossing time zones, so local time can be adjusted without stopping the watch. It lists the bezel as fixed.
Water resistance and other specifications
The official SBGE255 and SBGE257 pages specify 20 bar water resistance. Fratello expresses the rating as 200 m. A rating is a specification, not a guarantee that a watch is suitable for every water activity or condition.
The same official pages list a weight of 172 g, magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m, 30 jewels, a screw-down crown, and a 20 mm band width. The band-width figure alone does not establish that any particular replacement strap will fit or suit the watch.

Price and availability
When Grand Seiko’s U.S. product pages were accessed on October 8, 2026, they listed the SBGE255 and SBGE257 at $6,900. A separate U.S. Grand Seiko Boutique listing showed the SBGE255 out of stock at that time. These are dated U.S. listing details, not permanent prices or a worldwide availability statement; check the relevant official listing or retailer for current regional price and stock. The cited U.S. pages do not establish a current price for the SBGE253.

- Choose the SBGE253 if you want the most subdued black-and-red appearance; the versatility judgment comes from Fratello’s reviewer.
- Choose the SBGE255 if the blue dial and bezel with a light-blue GMT accent appeal to you. Ferenczi favored this colorway, but that preference is subjective.
- Choose the SBGE257 if you want green with a prominent yellow GMT hand and prefer Grand Seiko’s moss-inspired dial concept.
Because the three share the same basic platform, case dimensions, and movement, choosing among them is primarily a matter of color and wrist fit—not a difference in core timekeeping capability.
