Its defining technical feature is a 5 Hz movement, paired with a manufacturer-stated power reserve of approximately 55 hours. The reference combines that movement with a steel case, black dial and bracelet; its reported dimensions are 40.2 mm across and 50 mm lug-to-lug. This guide separates Grand Seiko’s caliber specifications from exact-reference details reported by retailers and reviewers, and explains what to check when shopping for a pre-owned example.
What is the Grand Seiko SBGH005?
The SBGH005 is a Grand Seiko automatic mechanical watch in the Hi-Beat 36000 line. It uses Caliber 9S85, a high-frequency movement that runs at 36,000 vibrations per hour, or 5 Hz. It is not the later SLGH005 White Birch: that is a different reference in a different movement family.

The exact-reference materials describe the SBGH005 as a black-dial watch with a stainless-steel bracelet. Its display includes hours, minutes, seconds and date. The available specifications and descriptions come from different sources, so movement figures below are attributed to Grand Seiko, while case dimensions and design details are identified as retailer- or reviewer-reported.
Caliber 9S85: what the Hi-Beat movement offers
Grand Seiko’s current Caliber 9S85 specifications list 36,000 vibrations per hour (5 Hz), 37 jewels and approximately 55 hours of power reserve. The movement is self-winding, can also be wound manually, and includes a date display and hacking seconds function. These are manufacturer specifications, not measurements of a particular SBGH005 in service.

Understanding the accuracy figures
Grand Seiko states a mean daily rate of +5 to -3 seconds per day for Caliber 9S85. The company measures this on the uncased movement in six positions under controlled conditions over 12 days. It separately gives normal-usage accuracy as +8 to -1 seconds per day. These figures describe different measures: the controlled mean-rate test should not be read as a guarantee that an individual, worn watch will gain or lose within that range each day. Grand Seiko’s Caliber 9S85 specifications and explanation provide the manufacturer’s methodology and figures.
Why 36,000 vibrations per hour matters
A 5 Hz movement makes more oscillations each second than a slower-beat mechanical caliber. Grand Seiko explains that the higher rate raises energy demand and makes durability more demanding. Its technical account attributes the 9S85’s design to component and material developments, including MEMS-produced escape-wheel and pallet-fork components. These are the manufacturer’s explanations of the engineering approach, not independent durability or accuracy test results for every watch.
Case, crystal and water resistance
An archived Ishihara Tokei listing for the SBGH005 describes a stainless-steel case, screw-lock crown, see-through screw back and dual-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. It lists water resistance at 10 bar. That is a specification for the reference as presented in the archived listing; it does not establish the current water resistance of a pre-owned watch, which can depend on seal condition and maintenance.
The 1916 Company’s exact-reference review reports a 40.2 mm case diameter, 13.4 mm thickness and 50 mm lug-to-lug length. Treat these as reviewer-reported dimensions rather than current official product specifications. The same review describes a polished steel case, black dial, steel bracelet and folding clasp. Together, those details identify the configuration readers are most likely to encounter under the SBGH005 reference, but an individual listing should still be checked against photographs and documentation.

How the SBGH005 wears and what to consider
The reported 40.2 mm diameter and 50 mm lug-to-lug span are useful starting points for judging fit, while the 13.4 mm thickness indicates how far the watch may sit above the wrist. Measurements alone cannot establish comfort: wrist shape, bracelet sizing, clasp position and personal preference all matter. If possible, compare the watch directly with a case of similar dimensions and inspect how the lugs sit on your wrist.
The black dial, date display and steel bracelet give the SBGH005 a straightforward everyday-watch configuration. The 10-bar rating in the archived listing is a design specification, not proof that an older example remains water-resistant. For swimming or other water exposure, rely on a recent pressure test of the individual watch rather than its original rating alone.
SBGH005 price and availability
Ishihara Tokei’s archived Japanese listing gives an original retail price of ¥577,500 including tax. That is historical Japanese pricing, not a current retail quote, resale estimate or conversion basis. A WatchCharts page dated September 2026 shows an exact-reference market listing path, but the available information does not establish a dependable current price range or a condition-adjusted value. WatchCharts’ SBGH005 reference page can indicate that listings exist; any asking price should be assessed against the specific watch’s condition, included items and service history.

Because condition and service history materially affect the value and reliability of an individual mechanical watch, evaluate the particular example rather than relying only on the reference’s specifications. Before committing, check:

- Featuring a Black Band, Silver-tone Case, Scratch Resistant Hardlex Crystal
- Box-shaped Hardlex crystal
- Second hand halt mechanism (Hacking)
- Reference and serial consistency: Confirm that the watch and its documentation correspond to SBGH005, and ask the seller to explain any discrepancy.
- Documentation: Review the warranty card, purchase paperwork and any records that support the watch’s provenance.
- Service history: Ask for dated service invoices or other records, and clarify what work was performed.
- Bracelet and clasp: Examine links, attachment points and clasp for wear, damage or missing components; confirm what is included in the sale.
- Water resistance: If water use matters, have a qualified watchmaker test the individual watch. The archived 10-bar specification cannot confirm the present condition of its seals.
- Running condition: Ask about observed timekeeping and winding behavior, while remembering that manufacturer specifications are not a performance report for that particular example.
These checks are practical buyer guidance; they do not authenticate or certify any listing. For a high-value purchase, an independent inspection by a qualified watchmaker can help resolve questions that photographs and seller descriptions cannot.
How to assess the SBGH005 against another watch
There is no meaningful winner without a specific alternative and a clear priority. Compare the watches on the factors that affect your use and the individual offer:
- Movement frequency and the maker’s stated accuracy measures
- Power reserve and winding requirements
- Case diameter, thickness and lug-to-lug length
- Water-resistance rating and the condition of the specific watch
- Dial, bracelet and clasp configuration
- Service records, overall condition and what is included
- Price for the exact example being considered
The SBGH005’s confirmed point of distinction is its 36,000-vph, 5 Hz Caliber 9S85 and approximately 55-hour manufacturer-stated reserve. A fair comparison requires verified specifications for the other model and a like-for-like assessment of condition and price.
