Its vertically brushed finish can look steel blue or light mocha in changing light, according to Fergus Nash’s 2020 hands-on review. Underneath, it is a 40mm stainless-steel Hi-Beat watch powered by automatic caliber 9S85.
What is the Grand Seiko SBGH279?
The SBGH279 is part of the Grand Seiko Collection and uses the brand’s modern 44GS design. Grand Seiko traces the 44GS design to 1967 and calls it a cornerstone of Grand Seiko Style. The grey dial gives this version a quieter appearance than a more familiar black dial, while the case’s polished and brushed facets keep the design from feeling plain.

Grand Seiko’s US boutique listing identifies the dial simply as grey. In his 2020 review for Time+Tide, Fergus Nash describes it as vertically brushed granite-grey. He observed that it shifts toward steel blue or light mocha depending on the light; those are his impressions, not fixed color specifications.
How does the dial and case wear?
Nash found the dial subtle and restrained, with its vertical brushing giving the grey surface texture rather than a flat, uniform look. He also noted the contrast of the black date wheel. That detail may be more noticeable against the grey dial than a color-matched date display would be.

- Screw-down crown
- 40mm Diameter
- Weight 178.0 g
The case measures 40mm across and 46.2mm from end to end. Nash described the lugs as wide and flowing, and viewed the watch as versatile enough to dress up or down. Those are style and fit impressions; wrist shape, preferred fit, and how prominent the watch feels will vary from person to person.
The bracelet is stainless steel, with alternating brushed and polished surfaces. Nash said the pattern gives it the impression of five links. Grand Seiko specifies a three-fold clasp and a 19mm lug width.

Specifications are from Grand Seiko’s US boutique listing. The listed accuracy is a static specification, not a promise of the watch’s rate on every wearer’s wrist.
What does Hi-Beat 36000 mean for the movement?
The automatic caliber 9S85 runs at 36,000 beats per hour, the high-frequency movement designation reflected in the SBGH279’s Hi-Beat 36000 name. Grand Seiko lists a 55-hour power reserve and 37 jewels. The company’s stated static accuracy range is +5 to −3 seconds per day; actual results can differ with wearing conditions and are not established by that static figure.

Is the SBGH279 suitable as an everyday watch?
The specification sheet makes it a practical daily option on paper: it offers time and date, a steel bracelet, and 100m water resistance. But Nash noted that it has no luminous paint, which he considered a drawback for tool-watch use in low light. Whether that matters depends on how often night-time legibility or a more overtly utilitarian look is important to you.

When the US boutique page was crawled, it displayed a price of USD $6,100 and marked the SBGH279 out of stock. That is a time-sensitive US listing, not a guaranteed current price or indication of stock elsewhere. Nash’s 2020 Time+Tide article reported AUD $9,000 and boutique availability in Australia at that time; it is historical market context, not a current quote.
