Its appeal is straightforward: clear twin-register timing, vintage-inspired details and no date window. In Nick Kenyon’s 2020 hands-on review, it felt substantial without dominating his wrist; whether that balance works for you depends on your wrist and how you feel about its 13 mm thickness and subdials that cut into the hour markers.
What is the Longines Heritage Classic Chronograph 1946?
Reference L2.827.4.73.0 is a modern chronograph inspired by a Longines model from 1946. Time+Tide’s Nick Kenyon describes the historical watch as an example held in the Longines Museum in Saint-Imier. The modern interpretation keeps several visual cues—curved Arabic numerals, twin registers and oval pushers—but is not a one-for-one reproduction.

The layout reflects a practical compromise between period styling and the modern movement: the running seconds and 30-minute chronograph counter are in the opposite positions from those on the original. The original’s plume-shaped minute hand also gives way to a blued leaf-shaped hand. The result preserves the old-fashioned character without reproducing every detail.
How does the design look and wear?
Dial and legibility
The silver dial uses painted Arabic numerals, with raised Breguet-style numerals among the details Kenyon particularly liked. Blued steel hands add contrast, while recessed subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock give the face structure. There is no date display to interrupt the dial.

The subdials cut into the 3 and 9 hour markers. Kenyon considered the overall balance successful, but noted this detail may bother some owners. It is worth examining closely if uninterrupted hour markers matter to you.
Case presence
Longines’ reproduced reference sheet specifies a 40 mm stainless-steel case, 13 mm thickness and 20 mm lug distance. The domed sapphire gives the watch visual depth. Kenyon described the case as substantial but not wrist-dominating, and praised the lugs’ downward slope. That is one reviewer’s wrist impression, not a universal fit guarantee; wrist size and shape affect how the watch sits.

What movement and chronograph layout does it use?
The automatic L895 is specified with a 54-hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The display keeps the chronograph easy to read: elapsed seconds use a central hand, while elapsed minutes are tracked on the 30-minute counter at 9 o’clock. Small seconds sit at 3 o’clock.
SJX identifies the L895.5 as based on ETA’s A31.L21 and describes it as a modular chronograph with an ETA chronograph module. Its article includes a correction clarifying that the module is ETA, not Dubois-Depraz. This movement detail comes from that publication’s explanation, rather than the Longines specification sheet’s basic calibre listing.

What did the hands-on review conclude?
Kenyon’s praise centers on a restrained, readable chronograph rather than a feature-packed watch. He highlights the raised numerals, blued hands, recessed twin registers, sloping lugs and supple leather strap. His assessment was that the watch has heft without overwhelming the wrist. The main design question for a prospective buyer is whether the cut-away 3 and 9 markers feel like a pleasing integration or an unwelcome interruption.
As Kenyon put it, “There is a lot to be said for a simple chronograph.” The sentiment suits a watch whose appeal rests on its dial, proportions and conventional timing display, rather than extra complications.
