Its 40mm stainless-steel case follows the bezel-free 62GS design, while its light-purple Ginza Grid dial represents winter dawn in Ginza. It launched in Japan on January 19, 2024, at a recommended price of ¥847,000 including tax, through six Ginza-area locations.
That combination explains the watch’s appeal. The SBGH317 is not simply another purple-dial Grand Seiko or a standard catalog Hi-Beat model. Its dial, case, movement, and original distribution connect it to Ginza, Tokyo’s historic shopping district. The launch information is historical; it does not establish current stock or resale availability.
What is the Grand Seiko SBGH317?
The full name is Heritage Collection Mechanical Hi-Beat 36000 Ginza Limited Edition. Seiko Watch announced the reference on January 9, 2024, with release scheduled for January 19. Production was limited to 530 pieces. The Japanese recommended launch price was ¥847,000 including tax. Seiko Watch’s launch announcement says the watch would not be sold through Grand Seiko Boutique Online.
“Ginza-exclusive” describes the original route to market: the watch was allocated to six Ginza-area stores. It does not establish whether those stores, or any other seller, have it in stock now.

The Ginza Grid dial: the reason to buy this reference
The SBGH317’s thin, light-purple dial represents winter dawn in Ginza, when the city emerges quietly in the dry winter air. Its Ginza Grid Pattern abstracts the district’s buildings and diagonal street grid.
Grand Seiko says the pattern is oriented so that 12 o’clock corresponds to north on a map of Ginza. Reflected light creates changing shading across the dial. The Seiko Watch announcement describes the design and its inspiration.
A specialist hands-on review describes the applied markers and hands as silver-toned and identifies the case as a 62GS-style form. Those are reviewer observations about appearance, not separate manufacturer performance claims. See the hands-on SBGH317 review at Piazo.
Why the SBGH317 is called a 62GS-style watch
“62GS” describes the case design lineage, not the movement. Grand Seiko introduced the original 62GS in 1967 as its first automatic model. Its bezel-free construction fixes the crystal directly to the case, creating a broad opening around the dial. Grand Seiko says the design was revived in 2015. Grand Seiko’s 62GS history explains the original design.

Specifications and launch details are from Seiko Watch’s January 9, 2024 announcement. The static daily rate and wearing-accuracy guide are distinct measures, not a promise of an individual watch’s results.
Caliber 9S85: what “Hi-Beat 36000” means
The SBGH317 uses Caliber 9S85, an automatic mechanical movement with manual winding. It operates at 36,000 vibrations per hour, or 10 beats per second; that frequency is what “Hi-Beat 36000” refers to. The movement has 37 jewels and an approximately 55-hour power reserve.
Grand Seiko states a static daily rate of +5 to −3 seconds per day and provides a wearing-accuracy guide of +8 to −1 seconds per day. These are different measures. They do not guarantee that a particular watch will show those results in use.

The announcement says the watch was not sold through Grand Seiko Boutique Online. The launch announcement records the original sales locations and terms. This is a description of its 2024 launch, not confirmation of present availability or current retailer status.
Where can you buy an SBGH317 now?
The available launch information does not establish current retail stock, resale listings, or a current market price. Treat any listing as an individual offer to verify, rather than evidence of general availability. The original ¥847,000 Japanese recommended price is historical and is not a current valuation.
Before considering a listing, check the reference, condition, included accessories, service information, seller identity, return terms, and payment and shipping protections. Do not assume a marketplace listing is active, authenticated, or covered by a particular protection unless you confirm those details directly.

SBGH317 buying checklist
- Verify the reference. Confirm that the caseback and documents identify SBGH317. Do not assume similar-looking Grand Seiko references are interchangeable. Request clear photographs of the caseback, dial, clasp, and paperwork.
- Check what is included. Ask whether the original presentation box, warranty documents, instruction material, spare bracelet links, and purchase receipt are present. Ask the seller to specify exactly which items are included.
- Inspect the dial and crystal. Look for scratches, marks, contamination, or signs of moisture exposure. Examine the box-shaped sapphire crystal under angled light. Because the reflective grid is central to the dial, request clear images in more than one lighting condition.
- Examine the case and bracelet. Inspect the case edges, polished and brushed areas, bracelet, clasp, and caseback for damage or uneven finishing. Ask about any polishing or repair work.
- Request movement information. Ask for recent timing data and the date of any service. A single measurement is not a complete service history or proof of an official inspection.
- Confirm transaction terms. Review the seller’s identity, return period, authentication process, payment protections, insured-shipping arrangements, import duties, and warranty terms before paying.
What makes the SBGH317 distinctive?
The model brings together a location-specific dial, a modern 62GS-derived case, and a Hi-Beat movement. Its limited production of 530 pieces and original allocation across six Ginza stores give it a constrained launch history. Those facts do not guarantee appreciation or establish a resale price. For a prospective buyer, the individual watch’s condition, completeness, and provenance matter.
