Grand Seiko’s blue ceramic Hi-Beat GMT “Special” is the 350-piece SBGJ229G/SBGJ229, made for the 20th anniversary of its 9S mechanical caliber. It pairs a blue zirconia ceramic case and bracelet center links with high-intensity titanium, and houses the automatic 9S86 GMT movement. Grand Seiko’s official sources do not substantiate the “-A” suffix in the supplied title, so this article uses the references the brand publishes.
What is the Grand Seiko SBGJ229?
Grand Seiko announced the limited edition on March 22, 2018, to mark 20 years of its 9S mechanical caliber. The brand’s press release identifies it as SBGJ229G; its regional product page uses SBGJ229. Grand Seiko specified production of 350 pieces and said the watch would be available from July 2018 through its boutiques and selected retailers. Those are launch details, not confirmation of present-day stock. Grand Seiko’s launch announcement and the official SBGJ229 product page do not establish “SBGJ229-A” as a separate official reference.
How the blue ceramic and titanium construction works
The case and bracelet combine two materials rather than using ceramic throughout. Grand Seiko specifies blue zirconia ceramic for the outer case and bracelet center links, with high-intensity titanium for the inner case and outer bracelet links. The resulting blue-and-metal contrast is carried through the blue indexes and blue steel GMT hand. The dial has a pattern exclusive to this model, according to the brand.
Grand Seiko says its zirconia ceramic is seven times harder than stainless steel. That is the manufacturer’s material comparison, not a claim that the complete watch is scratchproof: the watch also includes titanium components, and the figure does not establish how the watch will withstand a particular impact or use.

Caseback and oscillating weight
A see-through caseback reveals a titanium-and-tungsten oscillating weight. Grand Seiko describes the weight as receiving blue anodic oxidation, an electrolysis process that forms an oxide film on metal; the film’s thickness affects its resulting color. An 18k rose-gold Grand Seiko lion insert provides a contrasting accent.
What the 9S86 movement offers
The automatic caliber 9S86 is a Hi-Beat GMT movement that runs at 36,000 vibrations per hour, or 10 beats per second. Grand Seiko lists 37 jewels and an approximately 55-hour power reserve. The movement supports a GMT hand for a second time zone and calendar-linked time-difference adjustment; the product page specifies self-winding with manual winding. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent timing-test results.

Accuracy figures and their conditions
The published accuracy numbers describe different conditions and should not be treated as interchangeable. In its 2018 launch release, Grand Seiko said the movement was specially adjusted to the “Special” standard at +4 to −2 seconds per day when static. The current product page separately lists a mean daily rate of +5 to −3 seconds per day, based on controlled six-position measurement before casing, and normal-usage accuracy of +8 to −1 seconds per day. The latter is the brand’s stated normal-use range, not a guarantee for every watch or wearer.
Dimensions, resistance and likely wrist fit
Grand Seiko lists a 46.4 mm case diameter, 52.5 mm lug-to-lug length, 14.6 mm thickness and 157 g weight. Those measurements point to a substantial sports-watch presence; actual fit depends on wrist shape and personal preference, and no on-wrist test is represented here.

Who might appreciate the SBGJ229?
The SBGJ229’s appeal is clearest for someone drawn to the anniversary story, high-frequency mechanical movement and distinctive blue ceramic-and-titanium design, and who is comfortable with its listed dimensions. Its 350-piece production run makes it a limited edition, but the launch quantity alone says nothing about current availability, condition, or market value. For a buying decision, verify the precise reference, condition, included materials and seller details rather than relying on the launch-era price or the unconfirmed “-A” suffix.
