The Orion Calamity stands out as a relatively slim automatic dive watch, built around a curved caseback and a thin movement. Reviewers have praised its comfort and finishing, but its specifications depend on generation, and one reviewer noted a tight bezel and uneven lume. The available coverage supports a closer look at its design and historical reviews—not a current price or availability verdict.
What makes the Orion Calamity distinctive?
Orion describes the Calamity as “the wonderfully thin dive watch with an ergonomic and curved caseback” in its official gallery. The curved caseback is central to the design: founder Nick Harris explained that the brand chose a thin movement and shaped the caseback with slimness and comfort in mind in his movement-selection article. That is the maker’s account of its design intent, not independent comparative testing.
The result is a diver with a notably low profile for its category. That makes the Calamity worth considering for someone who wants an automatic dive watch that sits closer to the wrist than a thicker case, while retaining a substantial water-resistance rating.
Which movement does each generation use?
Do not assume every Calamity has the same movement. Orion says the first generation used the ETA 2892 and subsequent generations adapted the Sellita 300. The Time Bum identifies the movement in its 2021 review sample more specifically as a Sellita SW300.

| Version or coverage | Movement reported | Source |
|---|---|---|
| First generation | ETA 2892 | Orion Watches |
| Subsequent generations | Sellita 300 | Orion Watches |
| 2021 review sample | Sellita SW300 | The Time Bum |
| 2018 review sample | ETA 2892-A2 | Worn & Wound |
If you are buying a used example or arranging service, confirm the individual watch’s generation and movement rather than relying on the model name alone. Harris’s article also directly addresses the reader’s natural question, “Why didn’t you use the 2824/NH35/9015?”: Orion’s stated priority was a thinner diver, and it selected the ETA 2892 for that purpose.
How compact is the case?
Published measurements vary slightly by review and model. The figures below belong to their respective reviewed examples; the thickness is especially worth reading with the source attached.

Orion’s official gallery describes the Calamity as a 200 m automatic diver. Differences in reported diameter and water-resistance units reflect the cited model descriptions and reviews, not a basis for assuming every generation or configuration is identical.
How does it wear?
Both independent reviews emphasize the slim, comfortable fit, though these are individual impressions rather than controlled or universal findings. Worn & Wound reviewer Brad Homes said the 2018 sample was comfortable on his seven-inch wrist and praised its finishing and bezel feel. The Time Bum likewise praised the later sample’s comfort and bracelet integration, as well as its case finishing.

The 48 mm lug-to-lug measurement provides useful context alongside the case diameter: it indicates the watch’s length across the wrist, while the tapered thickness and curved caseback contribute to the low-profile design. If you are shopping for a strap, 20 mm is the documented lug width; confirm the attachment and compatibility of the particular watch before ordering.

Experiences differ by review. Worn & Wound praised the feel of the 120-click unidirectional bezel on its 2018 example. The Time Bum found the bezel on its later sample somewhat tight, with limited grip because of its low profile. Its reviewer also called the lume adequate but uneven between the hands, bezel, and dial markers. These are review observations, not findings from a comparative test.

The 2018 Worn & Wound review lists BGW9 Super-LumiNova. The Time Bum’s 2021 review also reports BGW9 lume and describes ceramic or steel bezel variants, including 12-hour and dive styles. Check the exact configuration when evaluating a specific watch; not every variant should be assumed to have the same bezel insert or scale.
What did it cost, and is it available now?
Historical coverage reported a $1,495 asking price: Worn & Wound in 2018 and Hodinkee in its hands-on article on the original model. That is historical context, not a current quote. Current retail price, stock, warranty terms, direct purchase options, and resale values are not established here.

Quick Recap
Who should consider the Calamity?
- A good candidate: someone looking for an automatic diver with a slim profile, curved caseback, and reported comfortable fit.
- Check carefully: buyers who prioritize an easy-to-turn bezel or uniformly bright lume, given The Time Bum’s observations on its 2021 sample.
- Before buying or servicing: verify the generation, movement, and exact bezel configuration of the watch in question.
