The clearest difference is on the dial: SBGR053 carries both Seiko and GS logos, while SBGR253 has only the GS logo at 12. The SBGR053 is discontinued; the SBGR253 has an official specification page, but that does not establish local stock or a current retail price. Whether either is the right entry point depends on which dial you prefer, how the 13.3mm case wears on your wrist, and the condition and price of the particular watch.
What is the difference between SBGR053 and SBGR253?
The main documented visual distinction is the branding at 12 o’clock. Fratello’s comparison describes the SBGR053 with both Seiko and GS logos, and the SBGR253 with a solo GS logo. Their core specifications are otherwise closely aligned.

How do the 37mm case and bracelet wear?
Diameter alone does not tell the whole fit story. Grand Seiko lists the SBGR253 at 44.6mm lug-to-lug and 13.3mm thick, with a 19mm band width. The lug-to-lug measurement can help estimate how the watch spans the wrist; the thickness is worth considering if you prefer a watch that sits close to the wrist or slides easily under a snug cuff.

Fratello guest author Thor Svaboe describes the 37mm watch as “not svelte,” a personal wearing impression rather than a universal fit verdict. He also praises the black dial’s changing reflections on the indices and hands. Those observations may help set expectations, but wrist shape, bracelet adjustment and personal preference matter more than a single reviewer’s experience.
For the SBGR053, the archive lists a 19mm band width. If you are considering a pre-owned bracelet example, inspect its fit and completeness rather than assuming all original links are present. Svaboe specifically advises checking for missing bracelet links; Fratello also notes screw-in pins and half-links in its article.
What does caliber 9S65 promise—and what does it not?
Grand Seiko specifies automatic/manual winding caliber 9S65 and an approximately 72-hour reserve for the SBGR253. The manufacturer says its mean daily rate is +5 to -3 seconds per day, measured before casing in six positions under controlled conditions over 12 days. Its separate normal-use accuracy specification is +10 to -1 seconds per day.
These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that an individual watch—especially a pre-owned one—will keep that time today. The pre-casing mean-rate test describes the movement under defined conditions; actual performance depends on the particular watch and its condition. For a used example, ask for a recent timekeeping assessment rather than treating the printed range as a service report.

- Screw-down crown
- 40mm Diameter
- Weight 178.0 g
Grand Seiko also lists 10 bar water resistance and 4,800 A/m magnetic resistance for the SBGR253. A specification page does not establish the present condition of a used watch’s seals, so do not assume an older example retains its rated resistance without an appropriate assessment.
Is the SBGR053 discontinued?
Yes. The Inoue Watch Store archive identifies the SBGR053 as discontinued and lists April 2010 as its release date. The retailer says its product information reflects release-era details and that it had no stock at the time represented by its archive. Treat this as a retailer’s historical record, not as a current official product listing.
The SBGR253 has a product page with published specifications on Grand Seiko’s site. A live specification page is not proof that a particular retailer or region has the watch available to buy.
Is the 37mm Grand Seiko too thick?
At 13.3mm thick, the SBGR253 is compact in diameter but not especially slim by its stated dimensions. Whether it feels too thick depends on your wrist and how you wear a watch. If possible, try one on; otherwise compare both the 44.6mm lug-to-lug span and 13.3mm thickness with a watch you already find comfortable. Svaboe’s “not svelte” comment is a useful caution, not a substitute for your own fit assessment.

What should you check before buying a pre-owned SBGR053?
Because the SBGR053 is discontinued, an individual pre-owned listing matters more than a model-level description. Review the actual watch and ask the seller for evidence where possible:
- Condition and polishing: Look closely at the case and bracelet for wear, damage or refinishing that may affect the surfaces and edges.
- Bracelet completeness and fit: Confirm which links are included and whether the bracelet can be sized to your wrist. Missing links can affect both fit and the cost or effort of making the watch wearable.
- Service history and performance: Ask when it was last serviced and request a recent timekeeping assessment. A model specification does not establish the condition of a specific movement.
- Provenance and seller confidence: Check the seller’s identity, return terms, documentation and the consistency of the watch’s details and photographs.
- Box and papers: Establish exactly what is included. Do not assume completeness from a generic listing description.
- Water resistance: Ask whether the individual watch has been tested; the archive’s 10 bar rating does not verify the condition of an older example.
Are the asking prices comparable?
No single figure in the available dated references establishes what either watch should cost today. Fratello reported approximately €4,500 new for the SBGR253 and approximately €2,500 pre-owned for the SBGR053 in its 2020 article. WatchCharts showed a C$3,258 estimated pre-owned price dated September 3, 2026; this is a model estimate, not verified realized sale data. The dates, currencies, methods, markets and condition assumptions differ, so these are not a direct comparison or a current valuation.
The Inoue Watch Store archive gives a historical end-of-sale reference price of ¥400,000 plus tax for the SBGR053. That release-era Japanese price is not a current offer. For a purchase decision, compare the specific watch’s condition, completeness, seller confidence and asking price with relevant listings in your market.
Is the hype justified?
The case for these references is straightforward: a 37mm steel Grand Seiko with an automatic movement, a stated three-day reserve and a restrained black-dial design. Fratello’s hands-on writer highlights the way light plays across the indices and hands, while the official SBGR253 specifications provide concrete dimensions and movement figures. Those are reasons the watches may appeal; they do not establish that every example is worth its asking price.
There is no universal winner between SBGR053 and SBGR253 on the facts available here. Choose based on dial branding, how the case fits, and—especially for the discontinued SBGR053—the condition, bracelet completeness, provenance and actual price of the individual watch.
