The Grand Seiko SBGR311 is a 1,300-piece anniversary watch distinguished by its brown, 80-line radial-spiral dial and see-through caseback. Its 42 mm steel case, 47.9 mm lug-to-lug length and 174 g listed weight make fit a key consideration; inside, the automatic 9S68 offers a date and approximately 72 hours of power reserve. It is a compelling choice if you want a visually distinctive mechanical Grand Seiko, but the dimensions, weight and condition of any pre-owned example deserve close attention.
What makes the SBGR311 distinctive?
Grand Seiko designated the SBGR311 a Heritage Collection Caliber 9S 20th Anniversary Limited Edition and produced 1,300 pieces. Each caseback is individually numbered from 0001/1300 to 1300/1300. The anniversary identity is most apparent on the dial and through the exhibition caseback, which shows the movement alongside a gold-color lion emblem and anniversary inscription. Grand Seiko’s product page gives the edition details.

The brown radial-spiral dial
The dial is the watch’s defining feature. Grand Seiko describes its original anniversary motif as 80 spun curved lines arranged in a radial spiral, with repeated “G” and “S” marks from Grand Seiko and the “S” mark of Daini Seikosha worked into the pattern. The maker connects the brown color to the flames used by traditional blacksmiths in Shizukuishi. The effect is a patterned dial rather than a plain brown surface; how prominent it looks will depend on lighting and personal taste.
Case and finishing
The stainless-steel case pairs highly polished surfaces with brushed areas. Fratello’s 2018 hands-on review notes that contrast, while its reviewer felt the watch did not wear as large as its 42 mm diameter might suggest compared with some smaller Grand Seiko watches he had handled. That is one person’s impression, not a fit guarantee: wrist shape, bracelet adjustment and individual preference all matter. Fratello’s review also compares it with the separate blue-dial SBGH267.

How does the SBGR311 wear?
Look beyond the headline diameter when assessing fit. The official dimensions are 42.0 mm across, 47.9 mm lug-to-lug and 13.1 mm thick; Grand Seiko lists the weight at 174 g. Lug-to-lug length helps indicate how far the watch spans across the wrist, while weight gives a practical sense of its substantial steel presence. If possible, try it on with the bracelet sized as you would wear it.
- Diameter: 42.0 mm.
- Lug-to-lug: 47.9 mm.
- Thickness: 13.1 mm.
- Listed weight: 174 g.
The bracelet is listed at 21 mm width and a 205 mm band perimeter, with a folding clasp and push-button release. The 21 mm figure does not by itself establish that a generic replacement strap will fit the original end links or sit correctly, so check attachment compatibility before ordering.
What does the 9S68 movement offer?
The SBGR311 uses Grand Seiko’s 9S68, a mechanical movement that supports automatic and manual winding. It displays the date, has 35 jewels and is specified with approximately 72 hours of power reserve. In practical terms, a fully wound watch can continue running for about three days off the wrist, though the exact result depends on its condition and state of wind.

Understanding the accuracy figures
Grand Seiko gives two different accuracy figures for the 9S68. Its mean daily rate is +5 to -3 seconds per day, measured before casing over 12 days in six positions under artificially controlled conditions. The separately stated normal-use accuracy is +10 to -1 seconds per day. These figures describe different conditions; neither tells you how a particular used SBGR311 is performing now. For an individual watch, current performance depends on its condition and should be assessed as such.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNot the high-beat anniversary model
The SBGR311 is not the high-beat SBGH267. Fratello distinguishes the references: the SBGH267 is the blue-dial model with a 39.5 mm diameter and a different case shape, while the SBGR311 is the 42 mm brown-dial watch reviewed here. Do not assume the two share a movement or wear alike simply because both are 9S anniversary editions.
Water resistance and everyday care
Grand Seiko specifies 10 bar water resistance, a screw-down crown and magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m. These are original model specifications, not proof that an older or pre-owned example remains sealed today. Before relying on one around water, have its water resistance checked by a qualified service provider. Follow the operating guidance in the Grand Seiko 9S instruction manual, including its sections on the crown, accuracy and water resistance.

Service pricing and timing depend on location and can change. Fratello’s 2018 article records historical service information, not current, universal Grand Seiko policy. Confirm service availability, recommended intervals, cost and turnaround with an authorized provider in your country.

Production was limited, but that does not establish what is available now or what a fair current price is. The sources cited here do not verify present inventory or market value. Evaluate the specific watch and seller rather than relying on its limited-edition status alone.
- Confirm the reference and serial. Check that the watch is identified as SBGR311 and that its caseback numbering is consistent with the 0001/1300–1300/1300 edition range. Ask for clear, unaltered photographs.
- Inspect condition. Look closely at the polished and brushed case surfaces, bracelet and clasp for wear or damage. Check that the dial, hands, date and visible movement match the seller’s description.
- Ask for service records. Request available movement service documentation and clarify what work was performed and when. Missing records do not establish a specific fault, but they leave less of the watch’s history verified.
- Verify included items and terms. Establish whether box and papers are included if they matter to you, assess the seller’s reputation, and read the return period and conditions before paying.
- Request a current water-resistance test. Do not treat the original 10 bar rating as evidence of present sealing; ask for a recent test or arrange one before exposure to water.
Is the Grand Seiko SBGR311 right for you?
The SBGR311 makes the most sense for someone drawn to its textured brown anniversary dial, numbered limited-edition caseback and conventional automatic movement with a long stated reserve. The main trade-offs are its substantial dimensions and listed weight, plus the need to assess condition carefully when buying a watch whose current availability and value are not established here. If you are comparing it with the smaller SBGH267, treat that as a distinct watch with a different case and movement rather than a simple color alternative.
