Both are associated with the 9F61 movement and stainless-steel bracelet construction. The documented specifications make the SBGX117 a substantial, feature-rich sports watch on paper; whether either is a good pre-owned buy depends especially on the individual watch’s condition and water-resistance testing.
What differs between the SBGX117 and SBGX115?
The principal documented distinction is dial color: a WatchProSite community-maintained reference list identifies the SBGX115 as white-dial and the SBGX117 as black-dial. The same list describes both as 9F61 stainless-steel bracelet divers. Because this is not an official current catalog, treat the reference list as useful identification guidance and verify the dial and reference on the specific watch.

For the SBGX117, a Japanese product announcement from SAKAI & Co. dated August 11, 2014, provides model-specific case and feature details. The available material does not establish equivalent dimensions for the SBGX115, so do not assume every measurement is identical solely because the models are siblings.
How large and heavy is the SBGX117?
SAKAI & Co.’s 2014 announcement lists the SBGX117 at 42.7 mm wide, 50.2 mm long, and 13.0 mm thick, with a stated weight of 198.0 g. Those figures describe a fairly broad, substantial steel watch on its bracelet; they are specifications, not a prediction of comfort on a particular wrist. The 50.2 mm length is especially useful to compare with a watch you already wear, while the listed weight makes bracelet condition and fit worth checking in person.

The announcement also specifies a stainless-steel case, sapphire crystal with an internal anti-reflective coating, and luminous hands and indexes. Its black dial is consistent with the SBGX117 identification in the community list, but the 2014 retailer announcement is the stronger source for the SBGX117’s construction and dimensions.
What does the 9F61 movement offer?
Accuracy and battery interval
Grand Seiko lists the 9F61 as accurate to ±10 seconds per year and gives an approximate battery life of three years. These are manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent test of a particular watch. The movement is a three-hand quartz caliber, offering a low-maintenance time display between battery changes rather than the winding routine of a mechanical watch.
Grand Seiko’s design claims
Grand Seiko’s broader 9F description says the series uses high torque intended to support broad hands, improves the second hand’s positional alignment with dial markers, and uses a sealed structure intended to help retain lubricating oils. These are the manufacturer’s explanations of the design; they should not be read as measured findings about an individual SBGX115 or SBGX117.

- Three-fold clasp with push button release
- Dual-curved sapphire crystal
- Power reserve display on the back
- Power resrve Approx. 72 hours(3 days)
The 9F family belongs to Grand Seiko’s quartz lineage: the brand’s official history dates the first Grand Seiko to 1960 and the 9F series to 1993. The 9F61 is quartz, not Spring Drive.

SAKAI & Co.’s 2014 announcement lists 200 m diver water resistance, a unidirectional rotating bezel, a screw-lock crown, and a screw caseback for the SBGX117. It also lists reinforced magnetic resistance. These are published specifications for the model, not a guarantee that a decades-old example remains water-resistant today.
Grand Seiko’s instructions cover screw-down crowns and diver-watch functions, and advise proper diving experience and training, compliance with diving rules, pre-dive inspection, and fully screwing in the crown. A buyer considering underwater use should have the actual watch inspected and pressure-tested by a qualified service provider before relying on it. A model’s original rating cannot establish the condition of its seals, crown, or caseback now.

What should you check before buying one pre-owned?
These references are older models, and the available specifications do not establish present-day availability, market price, or the condition of any listing. Evaluate the watch in front of you rather than treating the model description as a condition report.
- Reference and dial: Confirm the reference and whether the dial is the expected white SBGX115 or black SBGX117; the cited color distinction comes from a community-maintained list.
- Case and fit: Compare the SBGX117’s published dimensions with your wrist and inspect edges for excessive polishing, dents, or other damage. The documented dimensions here are for the SBGX117 only.
- Bracelet: Check links, clasp operation, damage, and looseness or stretch. The available sources do not establish a specific defect pattern for these watches.
- Movement and battery: Ask when the battery was last replaced and whether service documentation is available. Grand Seiko’s operating instructions state that battery replacement is chargeable even during the guarantee period.
- Water resistance: Request recent qualified water-resistance testing if you intend to use the watch around water; do not infer present performance from the original 200 m specification.
- Authenticity and service: Review the watch’s markings and documentation with a reputable watchmaker or service provider, particularly if the seller cannot establish its history.
Is the SBGX117 or SBGX115 worth considering?
They make most sense for someone seeking a robustly specified Grand Seiko quartz diver and comfortable choosing between the listed black and white dials. The 9F61’s stated accuracy and roughly three-year battery interval are practical strengths, while the SBGX117’s documented 42.7 mm width, 50.2 mm length, and 198.0 g weight make it important to assess size and heft rather than buying from photos alone. The defining purchase decision is not a paper specification: it is whether the particular watch has sound case, bracelet, battery-service, and water-resistance condition.
