The Grand Seiko SBGY003 is a compact, manually wound Spring Drive dress watch: its official dimensions are 38.5 mm across, 43.7 mm lug to lug and 10.2 mm thick. Those proportions and its leather strap give it a dress-oriented profile, but “thinner” is not a quantified comparison here—the available specifications do not identify a comparator. Released in 2019 as a 700-piece Spring Drive 20th Anniversary limited edition, it pairs caliber 9R31 with a patterned dial and a 72-hour power reserve.
What the SBGY003 is—and what “thinner, dressier” means
The SBGY003 belongs to Grand Seiko’s Elegance Collection and commemorates 20 years of Spring Drive. The brand limited production to 700 watches. Its relatively restrained 38.5 mm diameter, 43.7 mm lug-to-lug length and 10.2 mm thickness are the concrete basis for describing it as a dressier, more compact design. Without a named comparison watch and verified dimensions for it, however, there is no basis for claiming the SBGY003 is thinner than a particular model.

Grand Seiko describes the dial pattern as radiant and says it changes expression with the viewing angle. That is the manufacturer’s characterization, rather than an independent hands-on assessment.

These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not measurements from a wear test. The stated splash resistance is not a swimming or diving rating. The 19 mm band width gives a starting point when considering replacement straps, but width alone does not establish fit; end shape, clasp and compatibility also matter.

Caliber 9R31 and how Spring Drive works
The SBGY003 uses caliber 9R31, a manually wound Spring Drive movement with 30 jewels, a power-reserve indicator and approximately 72 hours of reserve. Grand Seiko rates its accuracy at ±15 seconds per month, equivalent to ±1 second per day.
Spring Drive combines a mainspring-powered gear train with electronic time regulation. Grand Seiko’s official 9R instruction document describes it as a mechanism “in which accuracy is controlled by a microelectronics quartz mechanism while using the power of the mainspring to move the hands.” In practical terms, winding supplies the energy that moves the hands, while quartz-based electronics regulate timekeeping.

Limited-edition release and historical prices
Grand Seiko’s March 2019 UK launch announcement quoted an approximate European recommended retail price of €8,200. That is historical launch pricing for a specified region, not a current price or a global quote. Hodinkee reported a launch-era figure of $7,600 in 2019; that figure likewise does not establish today’s resale value or availability. Current stock, secondary-market pricing and an Amazon listing were not established.

Grand Seiko lists the case at 10.2 mm thick and 43.7 mm lug to lug. The 1916 Company’s 2023 video description gives 10.3 mm and 43.4 mm, respectively. These are different published figures from different sources; the manufacturer’s specifications are used here, without averaging the measurements.
