What is the Grand Seiko SBGY023?
Reference SBGY023 was announced by Grand Seiko on November 18, 2022, as the GS9 Club USA’s first member-exclusive limited edition. It was presented at the GS9 Club Experience 2022 in Brooklyn, New York, and Grand Seiko said it would become available after the event. The official model page identifies it as the “GS9 Club Limited Edition.”

Grand Seiko announced an edition of 299 pieces. The 2022 press release gave an approximate U.S. recommended retail price of $8,500. The official U.S. product page also shows $8,500, but neither figure establishes what the watch currently costs from retailers or on the secondary market. Current inventory and transaction prices have not been established.
What is the story behind the dial?
Grand Seiko says the design draws on Shinshu, the Japanese region where its Spring Drive watches are made. The company links the dial’s warm-grey color to Matsumoto Castle at autumn dusk. Its central kirazuri pattern references the ukiyo-e printmaking technique of sprinkling mica powder on a print to give it sparkle. A contrasting minutes track frames the patterned center.

The manufacturer also describes the dial as following the curve of the crystal. The minute and seconds hands are curved by hand to follow that profile, and the seconds hand is individually tempered blue. These are Grand Seiko’s descriptions of the design, rather than independent observations.

How does the 9R31 movement work?
The SBGY023 uses the hand-wound Spring Drive Caliber 9R31. Grand Seiko says it selected the slim caliber for precision, robustness, duration and compact size. Its dual-spring barrel places two mainsprings in parallel within one barrel; the movement also has a single-piece bridge with a hairline finish and polished edges.
The stated reserve is approximately 72 hours, and Grand Seiko specifies accuracy of ±15 seconds per month, or ±1 second per day. These are manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent timing test. The power-reserve indicator is on the movement side and can be seen through the sapphire caseback.

What to know about the size and water resistance
The 38.5 mm case measures 43.7 mm from lug to lug and 10.2 mm thick, with a 19 mm band width. Those published dimensions describe the watch; they do not establish how it will fit an individual wrist.
Grand Seiko lists the watch as “Splash Resistant.” It does not state a depth rating on the model page, so this should not be read as a dive-watch specification. The same page lists magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m.
