The Grand Seiko SLGB009 is the clearer fit if you want Spring Drive and its maker’s unusually tight stated accuracy specification, a 40 mm case, and a white-birch-inspired dial. A Rolex Datejust may suit you better if you have a particular size, bezel, bracelet, material, and dial combination in mind. Because “Datejust” describes a broad family rather than one watch, compare the SLGB009 with a specific Datejust reference—not with the collection in the abstract.
How do their accuracy claims compare?
Grand Seiko specifies the SLGB009’s Caliber 9RB2 Spring Drive at ±20 seconds per year, or approximately ±3 seconds per month. Rolex specifies −2/+2 seconds per day after casing for the Datejust references cited here, and describes them as Superlative Chronometers. These are manufacturer specifications and certification descriptions, not results of a head-to-head test; they use different periods and terms, so they do not establish comparative real-world performance.

Spring Drive is the movement approach in the SLGB009. The Datejust 31 reference 278240 uses Rolex Caliber 2236, while Datejust 41 reference 126301 has Rolex’s Perpetual mechanical self-winding movement. For the Rolex side, the exact reference matters: the family does not have one movement or one universal specification. See Grand Seiko’s SLGB009 specifications, and Rolex’s pages for the Datejust 31 278240 and Datejust 41 126301.

The SLGB009 measures 40.0 mm across, 47.2 mm lug-to-lug, and 11.7 mm thick, and weighs 168 g. Those figures give a more useful picture of wrist presence than diameter alone. The cited Datejust 31 reference is 31 mm, so it is not a size-matched comparison. Datejust models come in different sizes; choose the reference closest to the dimensions and feel you want, then try both watches on if possible.

- Calendar-linked time difference adjustment function
- Movement Caliber 9S86,
- Dual-curved sapphire crystal
Bracelet adjustment can also affect day-to-day comfort. The SLGB009 clasp offers three adjustment steps totaling 6 mm, in 2 mm increments, without a tool. Rolex lists a 5 mm Easylink extension for the cited Datejust 41 reference 126301. Confirm the clasp and bracelet details for the specific Datejust reference you are considering.
What distinguishes their designs?
Grand Seiko SLGB009
Grand Seiko says the dial is inspired by white birch forests near the Shinshu Watch Studio. The watch has an Ever-Brilliant Steel case and bracelet and a box-shaped sapphire crystal. Its look centers on that textured, nature-inspired dial and a 40 mm case.

Rolex Datejust
The Datejust is configurable across references, with different sizes, bezels, bracelets, dials, and material choices. For example, the cited 278240 is made in Oystersteel and has a domed bezel. That example is not a stand-in for every Datejust; compare the precise combination you would actually wear.

How do reserve and water resistance compare?
The SLGB009 is specified with an approximately 72-hour power reserve. Rolex lists approximately 70 hours for Datejust 41 reference 126301; that figure should not be applied to every Datejust. The cited Datejust 31 278240 page does not establish a reserve figure.

- See-through case back
- Date display
- Screw-down crown
- 40mm Diameter
- Weight 178.0 g
Grand Seiko lists 10 bar water resistance for the SLGB009. Rolex lists 100 metres (330 feet) for reference 278240. These are the manufacturers’ published ratings; matching figures do not by themselves establish identical use conditions. Base use on the rating and guidance for the exact watch.
What do they cost?
Grand Seiko Australia’s June 24, 2026 announcement gives the SLGB009 a recommended retail price of AUD 14,500. That is a dated Australian price, not a global price. No Datejust price for a specified country and date is established here, so a direct price comparison would be misleading. Check the relevant local brand or authorized-retailer information for current pricing and availability.

Which watch should you choose?
- Prioritize the SLGB009 if Spring Drive, Grand Seiko’s stated ±20-seconds-per-year specification, its 40 mm proportions, or its white-birch-inspired dial are central to what you want.
- Consider a Datejust if you prefer a particular Datejust size and configuration. Decide on the reference, bezel, bracelet, dial, and material first; those choices determine which specifications apply.
- Compare daily wear details by checking the chosen reference’s dimensions, movement, reserve, water-resistance rating, and clasp adjustment rather than relying on collection-wide assumptions.
Grand Seiko’s guidance notes that mechanical-watch rates can vary with factors including winding from arm movement, temperature, and resting position. It recommends assessing gain or loss over a week to ten days in normal conditions rather than judging a single day. That general guidance is not a real-world test of the SLGB009 or the cited Rolex watches; see The Grand Seiko Standard.
