The auction page states that a 10% buyer’s premium was added on top of the hammer price, so the reported sale figure should not be mistaken for the buyer’s total cost.
What happened to the Loupe This auction?
Lot 4558 is a completed sale, not an upcoming auction. Loupe This reported a $30,555 sale price, 47 bids, and a $15,000–$25,000 estimate. Its stated 10% buyer’s premium was charged on top of the hammer price; the listing does not establish the buyer’s complete checkout total, including any other applicable costs. What watch was in lot 4558?
Loupe This catalogued the watch as a circa-1972 Grand Seiko VFA reference 6186-8000-G. Its listing describes a 37 mm stainless-steel case, silver sunburst dial, automatic caliber 6186B running at 36,000 beats per hour, leather strap, and inner and outer boxes. The condition score was V 9; the auction description called the vintage watch near mint overall, noting light scratches and small nicks on case edges, while describing the dial and hands as near mint. The listing also says this watch had previously sold at Phillips Geneva Watch Auction XIII for CHF 44,100. A timing-machine reading in the listing is explicitly a courtesy reading, not a service warranty or assurance of current accuracy. The lot’s catalogue page is the source for these specific details.
Why is the 6186-8000-G called a VFA?
VFA stands for “Very Fine Adjusted,” Grand Seiko’s designation for watches regulated to an especially demanding timekeeping standard. Phillips dates the 6186-8000 debut to 1972 and says the model remained offered through 1975. Its 2023 catalogue essay reports that research found production in five individual calendar months, an unusually limited production pattern; that does not establish the total number of watches made. Phillips describes the original VFA standard as a mean daily rate of ±2 seconds and an original guarantee of ±1 minute per month for two years. Those are historical specifications and warranty terms, not a claim about how accurately any surviving watch runs today. Phillips’ 2023 catalogue entry provides this historical context.

How does the $30,555 result compare with other auction results?
Other reported results provide context, but they are not a direct price guide: venue, date, condition, accessories, currency, and whether fees are included all affect comparison.
| Example | Reported result | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Loupe This lot 4558, 2026 | $30,555 | 47 bids; silver dial, caliber 6186B, inner and outer boxes; 10% buyer’s premium stated separately. Loupe This. |
| Phillips 1973 6186-8000-G, case no. 320’323 | CHF 27,940 | Caliber 6186, 37 mm, leather strap and original fitted box. Phillips. |
| Phillips circa-1974 6186-8000 | HK$228,600 | Catalogued with caliber 6186B and a 37 mm case. Phillips. |
| Another Phillips 1973 6186 VFA | $30,240 | A separate historical lot; the cited result should not be treated as an estimate for another watch. Phillips. |
For a meaningful comparison, match the reference and case number where available, condition and originality, included accessories, sale date and venue, currency, and fee treatment. A prior result—including this one—does not predict what another example will sell for.

What details should not be borrowed from other 6186-8000-G examples?
Time+Tide’s 2021 preview covered a different 6186-8000-G with a blue dial, not the silver-dial Loupe This watch. That separate example’s reported 18/19 mm lug width and other details cannot be attributed to lot 4558; the Loupe This listing does not state that lot’s lug width. Time+Tide’s preview identifies the other example.

What the auction result can—and cannot—tell a buyer
- It documents a specific completed transaction: $30,555 reported by Loupe This for lot 4558, with a 10% buyer’s premium stated on top.
- It records the auction house’s description of this watch and its accessories; it is not an independent condition assessment or a guarantee of service history or present-day performance.
- It offers one data point for a scarce vintage reference, not a current appraisal or a forecast for a different example.
